I think it’s worth pointing out to any American person watching this that the U.K. cx-30s all have 2.0 litre engines whereas in the USA they are all 2.5 so fuel consumption figures will be different. Great review 👍

This was actually my teacher's learner car. Very nice to drive :D Also about the dipping mirrors when reversing; in the one I drove it wasn't just the passenger side, but whatever side's was selected using the little mirror button which I believe is also used to select which mirror you're adjusting.
@RichardFanders2 жыл бұрын
That was the case in the Mazda 3, although I didn't notice it in this car.

That is correct. Both mirrors have that option. It depends on which one is pressed. Or you can have neither.

A taller more SUV vehicle is easier to get in and out, especially if you are 50 or over like most new vehicle buyers. Having your head higher is better for visibility, and it is safer if you get hit by a taller vehicle such as a truck. You do lose some fuel mileage from more effort to push through the air and more weight compared to a Mazda 3. Murica gets a turbo gasoline option instead of a diesel engine, also a CX-50 built in Alabama that is more CX-5 sized and all of them are all wheel drive, some with a big roof rack. Overall, Mazdas steer well and are reliable and look good. Subarus have a better brake feel, but do not look as good and only the BRZ is a 2 wheel drive at the rear for more sporty driving in corners. Keep up with coolant changes, also get a new thermostat periodically since the boxer engine is more prone to head gasket failure, especially if it overheats.
@PointNemo92 жыл бұрын
SUV's being safer is somewhat of a misconception. You have to also consider that the braking and handling are worse which makes it harder to avoid an accident.
@Wigglythegreat2 Жыл бұрын
I definitely appreciate a taller vehicle for ease of getting in and out. A friend of mine has a Honda Prelude SH and getting in and out out that isn't fun.

There is one engine option of the CX30 that is only for North America. It’s got a 2.5 litre turbo 4cyl with 256hp (filled with premium fuel). With regular fuel, you only get 227hp. It has AWD and a 6AT, and a 0-62 time of 6 seconds.

We used to have that engine but it was removed from our Mazdas, something to do with new EU regulations. It’s the MPS engine.

I wonder if the lower power engine is mapped down just like the 1.5 in the Mazda 2s. I’m sure the throttle response was capped at a certain percentage.
@MirekZyzak Жыл бұрын
@Joshyg02 it is the same engine than in previous Mazda 3 generation, so i don't see why it couldn't be re-mapped. Question is it really necessary. Mine when dynoed put out 151 HP stock, so much above factory claim. After remap 175 HP but you need to rev it to feel the difference (over 4500 RPM).

As I have said once before, Richard delivers the facts professionally and accurately and actually tests the car driving normally under different driving road conditions to derive mpg instead of merely quoting average figures- you can even see the instant and average readings. The real-world detail he always brings to his reviews is unique I find, and extremely useful. I watched this review specifically to find out about the mpg for this car and I am reassured on that point but I got so much more from it. Excellent. Thanks.

This is a great review! Some comments here for those wondering about the Skyactiv-G 122 BHP variant that he is driving here. I have that car with manual transmission (as he is also demonstrating). Since this is not a turbo-charged engine, but rather a naturally aspirated 2L engine, I picked the manual transmission on purpose. This was so that I could rev the car more in a lower gears if I needed more power. But TBH, it feels more than adequate. No issue getting up to speed fast on slip roads, or over-taking on the motor-way, etc. What I am really impressed with is just how wide a range the gears have. For example, coming down a slip road to join a dual carriage way/motor way, I often whiz up to 100kmh/60mph in just third gear and the engine does not struggle at all. I cannot speak for the automatic version but I'd say for the manual version, 99% of people will be absolutely fine driving the 122 Skyactiv-G (not spend more money on the Skyactiv-X). The acceleration is a lovely linear experience due to the non-turbo engine and the drive itself is super smooth. The tranmission is fantastic and all the bells and whistles and safety features that this car has, makes it a joy to drive on any journey - long or short. Fuel economy is fine. If I drive around 100kmh/60mph I can hit 5.4-5.8 L/100km and driving 120kmh/75mph I can get around 6.7-7.0 L/100km. It is less efficient in city driving of course but the start/stop function works well and is incredible fast to start the engine. There is no delay at all.

Tbh I really like that Mazda have stuck with NA engines rather than switching to turbos like almost every other car/car manufacturer out there. Sure it doesn't have the low end shove you get from a turbo, but imo the engine response makes driving (and especially driving a manual) more rewarding than just raw torque.

in a process of buying a first car (new driver). took the car to the test drive last week, and really like it. the idea was to purchase a g122 manual plus with sound/safety and style options. I believe it' would be same as the car on the review, except of the leather seats. however, around here car would not be available for about 6-11 months. They'll have a G122 plus available in about 2 months, without 360 camera, no Cruising & Traffic Support, an electric trunk doors... still debating if without the optional gear packages (which is what causes such a long waiting period), G150 would be a better idea, as it fits the budget.

When the reviewer says that he's heard that the auto box is ' good', I'm not sure what he means. Having driven the auto and the manual versions back-to-back, I would say that the auto box changes gear automatically, just that. It is old, torque-converter tech and it ruins the driver experience. It creates a car which feels mundane, unexciting and dull. If you want one of these, do try the manual. It's a smile-inducing pleasure to drive and leaves the auto in the shade.
@markl87406 ай бұрын
But lazy older people who like sliding in and out of the CX30 will get the auto cos it suits their laziness. SUVs are less fuel efficient and damage roads as heavier. All these potholes are the results of the SUV obsession of the last 20 years.
@geoffreyrobert41324 ай бұрын
@@markl8740 I think all the online order delivery vans and electric heavy vehicles can take more of the blame for potholes as we had larger heavier ordinary cars in years gone by. If there is blame, it's more the lack of road maintenance over many years catching up with us.
@ResevoirGodАй бұрын
this guy just discovered the concept of the automatic transmission lol. Automatics make literally every car more boring to drive, that wouldn’t be unique to the CX30 so your “discovery” isn’t as profound as you think it is. Coincidentally, automatics make the car far more pleasurable to drive in heavy traffic and around town which is what a such a car is for. If you want driving pleasure, buy a sports car

Is it worth the extra over the Mazda 3?
@BDX552 жыл бұрын
Not really. I had a test drive of both and bought the 3. They are exactly the same inside, just a higher body. I think the 3 on the outside is much nicer. The piano black plastic is very soft, though, and scratches really easily so you have to be careful when cleaning.

Great review, nice to see some honesty without the sales pitch. Had mine for 8 months from new, sport lux with 186hp in white. All in all I love it and all the toys it comes with including HUD, sunroof and full LED lights, but in hindsight with a child on the way I should’ve gone for the cx5. Shame the Bose system isn’t available as an optional extra instead of having to step up to the GT spec. Also disappointing I had to fork out extra for the adjustable boot floor - something that should be standard on a £27k car, but you can’t have everything I suppose.
