Rotory engines are like 1990's Ferraris. If you do the proper maintenance and look after them, they can be very dependable and somewhat reliable. The Mazda 787b won 24hr Le Mans, not through speed/performance but more so through reliability. The car had relatively slow pace and was actually not even in the top class competing in the race. However the only repair job needed for 24hrs, was to change the headlight bulb. Allegedly with an oil change, the engine could have raced another 24hrs. The car was so reliable it allowed the drivers to drive at 100% for 24hrs. To keep up with, and even overtake faster cars (e.g. Merc and Jag), pushing the car unlike typical endurance racing tactics. This is how, with a shit ton of luck, Mazda won LeMans 1991. So I think that adds some support to how reliable a properly set up rotary engine can be.

Rob dahms KZbin is a decent place to look for rotary stuff he’s got a 12 rotar engine at the moment it’s insane most his cars run rotary and stay pretty reliable he just gets more content out of the rebuilds so kinda win win

The rx8 rotary is so much worse then the rx7 rotary rx8s go before you get too 100k the rx7 rotary’s can be found with much higher miles still running there’s a build im watching rn where he’s using making a rx7 rx8 hybrid motor to fix the issues the rx8 has
