I truly believe that you have contributed SIGNIFICANTLY to the explosion of rotaries in the last 10 years. You have made us enthusiasts feel empowered to chase our dreams and you have shed SO much light on the “scary” parts of building rotaries. You have single handedly made the dreams seem much more accessible to the general public. I honestly think it’s quite ironic. In a sense I think that Mazda is the one that is biting the hand that feeds them lol. The last year of the FD was 2002. In a lot of ways it’s impressive that you can still get a factory short block from Mazda for one of these cars. I’d imagine they’re either running off whatever inventory they have left or are making small batches of engines as needed. As an auto manufacturer retaining the ability to make an engine 20 years after the car goes out of production is impressive/ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong it sucks that this option is going away/ people are being priced out of it. But at the same time the fact that it exists at all is kinda mind blowing.
@enderblazex2718
@enderblazex2718 7 ай бұрын
That is true. However, rotary engines are relatively easy to manufacture and you can say that this is pretty much Mazda's signature/halo/most memorable(however you want to call it) engine. The toughest part to design and build is the e shaft, the housings are pretty simple and the rotors are a bit more complicated but not by much. R&D costs have already been recuperated so it's not like Mazda can use this as an argument for the price increase. And even if there are things to improve on the rotary engine those will most likely not necessitate a full redesign.
@dooby1445
@dooby1445 7 ай бұрын
@@enderblazex2718You completely underestimate the cost break down of the situation. It’s a rotary engine being manufactured 20 years after the fact. Not a lot of sales are being made, therefore price must increase. But I guess KZbin keyboard warriors know more than the company itself.

ive been working in dealership parts departments for almost 8 years. When they do a drastic increase like that they are most likely going to discontinue it in the near future. For example about 2 months ago a front sub frame for a 2008ish Ford Escape used to be about $320 list... They then changed the MSRP to about $1300-1400 and most likely will be obsolete in a couple months.

aftermarket already make their own, they always have but not in mass production. none of these rotary companies are "big" enough to do that most are former and/or current race shops who ventured into building custom rotary parts. also the market demand just isnt there, alot of people who watch rob dahm arent rotary owners like myself for example. alot just like the RX7 platform from movies and the internet. also not to mention alot of rotary owners dont have the funds to buy a new engine iron or billet. Although saying all that, eventually long in the future a company will have to step up and invest and come out the woodwork and start producing parts in higher numbers especially if the OEM parts continue to go up lets hope its sooner rather than later

When you're working with resource limitations (as Mazda is doing), it's often cheaper to retool a production line than to build a totally new one. That comes at the cost of capacity for current products which in turn affects their pricing. (Admittedly they could also be using the pricing increase to drive down sales to the same effect, which is more likely when you consider the constant backorder situation these engines were in for the past 5+ years) Even if the R-EV demand increases enough to justify its own capacity/lines, we've likely seen the end of the affordable REW pricing. The good news is that this price increase drives innovation to a sector where margins weren't previously enough to justify aftermarket support/development.

Bought one (NA) and enjoyed it, but always felt it lacked power. Started to price out rebuilding it ~7 years ago. And, was surprised how insanely expensive it was then, even for just an NA setup. Now I just watch other people rebuild and destroy them. I just can't justify dumping so much money into it for fun. Many other cost effective options that are a lot of fun. I did hope to eventually see Mazda making the rotary again with new tech, and hoped it would drive prices down. But, seems to be more of a novelty now.

I owned an RX-7 for nearly 30 years. Had an NA FC that I bought used in 91' with 210,000 miles already on the car. I beat the ever living crap out of that motor for another 67,000 miles and went through a rear diff, 2 rear subframes and at least one transmission rebuild before I finally cracked a corner seal while racing a motorcycle at 130+ MPH. I still drove the car an entire summer before driving 1,200 miles to Winter Haven Florida to have the motor rebuilt. It made it the entire way ON A BLOWN MOTOR going over 100mph almost the whole way and still getting 21mpg @4,000 RPM. Put in 89' rotors regrooved to 3mm, had the oil passages enlarged and used a turbo oil pressure meter and had the full rotating assembly balanced. That motor was indestructible at that point as with the stock 87 computer I could never hit the actual redline of the motor. It went from street car to mostly track car to pretty much only a track car. But then I bought an EV and as much as I loved the Rotary I saw the writing on the wall. I no longer saw the point in trying to modify an ICE vehicle and all the supporting mods when an electric motor offered sooo much more potential with far fewer things to go wrong. I applaud you for all the work you are doing on Rotaries but what I think Mazda is doing is they know ICE vehicles are coming to an end and the cost of building crate motors and supporting a dead platform could not be maintained at even the already inflated price. One of these days I would love to do an EV conversion of an FC RX-7. I still love that car and the rotary, just not all the noise and fumes and troubles that come with it. I still have the original 276,000 mile rotors and rotor housings. Not sure I ever want to part with those.

As sad as it is to see Mazda raise the price of crate motors, I do believe this has a lot to do with the fact that they are in fact supporting a 20 year old platform (30 if we're talking USDM). The fact that they haven't just shelved everything away in to the great abyss of whatever crushes these old mills go to is wonderful, however we should also realize that Mazda is a company and keeping specialty tooling available to make a 20+ year old engine is not something every manufacturer is willing to do. I'm just still hoping we get the FC3S/FD3S parts injection like the Miatas got but was delayed due to covid.

Here's a recipe for teriyaki steak tips with a side of truffle fries for 2: **Teriyaki Marinated Steak Tips** Ingredients: - 1 lb steak tips - 1/4 cup soy sauce - 2 tablespoons brown sugar - 2 tablespoons mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine) - 1 tablespoon sesame oil - 1 clove garlic, minced - 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated Instructions: 1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and all ingredients are well combined. 2. Put the steak tips in a zip-top bag or shallow dish, then pour the teriyaki marinade over them, making sure they are fully coated. 3. Seal the bag or cover the dish, then refrigerate and let the steak tips marinate for at least 2 hours, or even better, overnight. 4. When you're ready to cook, preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. 5. Remove the steak tips from the marinade, shaking off any excess. Discard the remaining marinade. 6. Cook the steak tips on the preheated grill or skillet for about 4-6 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. 7. Let the steak tips rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute. **Truffle French Fries** Ingredients: - 2 large russet potatoes - 2 tablespoons olive oil - Salt to taste - 2 tablespoons truffle oil - 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese - 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley - 1 clove garlic, minced (optional) Instructions: 1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (230 degrees Celsius). 2. Rinse the potatoes under cold water to remove any excess dirt. Dry them thoroughly. Cut the potatoes into 1/4-inch thick sticks, keeping the skin on for extra texture and flavor. 3. In a large bowl, toss the potato sticks with the olive oil until they're well coated. Sprinkle with salt to taste. 4. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Don't overcrowd them, as this can cause them to steam instead of crisp up. 5. Bake the potatoes in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until they're golden brown and crispy, flipping them halfway through the baking time. 6. While the fries are hot, toss them with the truffle oil. If using, add the minced garlic and toss again. 7. Sprinkle the fries with the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. Toss once more to distribute the cheese and parsley. 8. Serve your Truffle French Fries immediately, while they're still hot and crispy. Enjoy guys

The price increase was one of the final blows for me. I’ve given up on my rotary and sadly sold the car. I’m still here to support because this community needs it, it was one of the funniest cars I’ve ever owned

Thank you, Mr Dahn. The basic problem of the three-arc rotary piston engines according to Felix Wankel is the very unfavourable combustion chamber with external mixture supply. If only air with 1:100 to 1:400 oil is supplied externally but the fuel is injected into a very small combustion chamber in the rotor, it is possible to run with a very high excess air lambda, such as greater than 1.444, at high power. The rotor damage you showed in the picture points directly to a lambda 1.15 mixture including the self-igniting diesel type (oil content). The very ideal ceramic coated combustion chamber shape you see in the Mazda Diesel engine with adjustable compression. You want to have approx. 600 KW per litre perfectly long-distance race-proof at the expense of the MAZDA development department? That will not be very easy. That's about as hard as trying to optimise the compression work of the charge air in the compression phase with a dry ice aid system that is pulled through a carburettor that mixes in distilled water and a little pop gas. To then make the whole thing usable with fuel of your choice injected into the combustion chamber. Humour is when not only every third person laughs. With professional regards Michael Frithjof Mueller

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I have a dream of one day building up an FC, and hopefully a lot of the parts going in it will be made by you/your company/your partners based on all the testing and engineering you've been doing. What Mazda has done has only made it all the more likely that's going to happen, and sooner than expected. Looking forward to seeing this adventure unfold, and I wish all of you the very best in this endeavour.

my gut is telling me they are ending 13b production or drasitcally reducing it to make way for the latest rotary technology. the new mx-30 with the single rotor range extender uses a rotor with 120mm radius (4.72 inches) vs (if i measured correctly on a rotor on hand) a 100m radius or just under 4" radius rotor. unlike the jump from 12a to 13b which was just a slightly wider rotor, these new rotors in the mx-30 are 20% taller. and have 830CC of displacement per rotor vs 654CC on a 13b. the new rotor in the mx-30 also has 76mm wide rotors vs 80mm of a 13b. all of this suggests the real reason we are seeing mazda increase the price is they are going to drastically reduce production of 13bs or stop it entirely as they ramp up mx-30 range extender production and, hopefully, rx9 production which is supposedly going to have a 3 rotor. just imagine a 3 rotor with 2.49l of displacement :)

Drag guys have been making 1600bhp on 2 rotors with compound turbo setups for a long time. You would need to compound turbo the 4 rotor to "push" anything. Mazda had 900bhp out of the NA 4 rotor in 1991.

So... this is the sort of video where a corporate youtube account could come in, *see their enthusiast community in disagreement*, and SAY SOMETHING. Something like "we hear you" - because clearly, this price jump is aimed at us. I hope, because they just don't understand us. Whenever KZbin comments on a video, it's for no other reason than just trying to foster a sense of connection. But if Mazda came in here and said "we did this because so and so - and we want to support you, therefore we're doing so and so", I think that'd be an amazing step in the right direction. My passion for all things Mazda has grown from recent years - even in places totally separate from the JDM scene. I hope that Mazda sticks to the unbeaten trail of caring.

As someone that sells wholesale parts for a *certain Japanese car company* they do this all the time with their "older" parts. They increase prices across the board for all their parts about once per fiscal quarter and the parts for older vehicles usually get hit the hardest.

Rob we know you have the start of your 6 rotor and it needs to come out to play. Also did you see the Vargas bro's tear down of the brand new crate engine Tommy Fyea purchased and was going in his build, it's worth looking at as the brand new engine from Mazda must have been built either on Friday at home time or Monday with a hangover.

I’m happy I hoarded a few S6 engines. I’m bummed I sold all my 20b’s over the years 🤦‍♂️ Even though my Cosmo pulls strong, I plan to replace the A code engine with a billet unit. I still wanna preserve the original engine on a stand because in a few years there wouldn’t be any more factory stock 20b’s
