When Newt died, I died. He was my first heartbreak and he deserved way better. I know I sound dramatic but it was just so sad.. him and Thomas deserved a better ending and I know he had to die so the movie/books didn’t get boring but still. Anyway I have a theory and it’s far fetched but it could be true. When Newt died in the book Thomas shut his eyes before shooting him and ran away with his eyes closed. That means he never saw where she shot him and he never saw that he was actually dead. I think he could’ve shot him in the shoulder instead of the head.
