Matty gives such honest, heartfelt reactions. I can't help but feel he's such a nice person. It's worth noting how betrayal features in the "Maze Runner" films. There are multiple instances. Thomas and Theresa are a prime example. They are both betrayers. Thomas betrays WCKD to the Right Arm. Theresa betrays Thomas, the immunes and the Right Arm to WCKD. Another interesting thing in this film is how differently both Thomas and Theresa are treated versus the other Gladers when they initially arrive at the WCKD facility. Theresa is separated from the group and has her memory restored. What does that tell us, if anything, about her presence in the Maze? Also, why is Thomas separated from the group and interrogated by Jansen? No one else seems to have been. Jansen probes Thomas about his attitude toward WCKD. The obvious conclusion is that if Thomas had accepted "WCKD is good," he'd have had his memory restored, too, and been back in WCKD's good graces. That would have made for an interesting twist. We know by this time all the boys and girls are test subjects (lab rats) and part of an experimental trial. The experimenters would have assigned them all unique identifiers, aka names, in order to tell one subject from another for the purposes of analysis etc. Therefore, when Jansen is calling out names in the cafeteria, there wouldn't be any name confusion. The same would be true in the maze. All the names on the wall would be unique. The little island of humanity, albeit rather degenerate, in the ruined city isn't incongruous. The same is true for Jorge's facility. Yeah, there are kranks all over, but there are still pockets of "normal" people who have not yet come down with the Flare. We assume they have the means to defend themselves against the kranks. It's not unbelievable they'd spend their days in drunken or drug-induced partying etc., trying to forget their troubles. This scene actually has a basis in one of the "Maze Runner" books, although it departs from the book quite a bit. Yes, Winston was a minor character, but he did have a decent amount of screen time and dialogue in both the first and second movies. Except for Thomas, who only had his memory back imperfectly, all the others had a long-standing relationship with Winston in the Glade. Killing him would be like killing a brother. So, they'd all find it difficult to just kill Winston in cold blood, especially since he still was fairly rational. They couldn't do that with Ben, either. In both cases, they punted, letting something/somebody else do the dirty work so-to-speak. Of course, it does make sense to recover the pistol, but it is understandable from an emotional point-of-view why they didn't. So-called mercy-killing is offensive as it's just plain old murder, putting someone out of our misery. Both it and suicide are selfish acts. On the other hand, what's going on here with Winston may be different. If Winston wants to kill himself not because of the pain or anguish becoming a krank entails but because he knows it will make him a danger to others, then that's an unselfish motive. It's like jumping on a grenade to protect your mates. Even Theresa would know Winston well because she had her memories back. So, she'd remember him from the before-times. However, she might be able to do it since she's always very clinical. Theresa is certainly a medical scientist of some sort. In fact, she may even be a medical doctor even though she's rather young. Since both Theresa and Thomas are supposed to be geniuses, anything is possible. It's also safe to conclude whatever Theresa is, Thomas must also have been. Could Thomas have killed Winston? I don't think so. Throughout the films, Thomas is all about saving people and saving them from WCKD. He seems equally aghast at Winston's prospective death as he was at Ben's. At the end of the second film, he offers himself to WCKD in exchange for the others' freedom. However, WCKD rejects his offer. Now, Thomas finds himself on the horns of a dilemma. Both of the possible outcomes are completely contrary to what Thomas wants, which is for the others to live and to live in freedom. So, does he kill himself and the others or does he surrender them all to WCKD? One could argue, sure, if he blows them all up, he does save them from WCKD. However, he'd be committing a selfish form of suicide and mercy-killing the others. Thomas, under severe emotional duress, clearly struggles with his decision, but he seem to be inclining towards blowing them all up. We often don't make the best decisions under these conditions. Indeed, that result would have been the most incompatible with Thomas' personality and his objective. The least bad option from Thomas' perspective would be to surrender them all to WCKD. Fortunately, Thomas is rescued from his dilemma by Jorge. Of course, the tragic irony is that WCKD should have taken Thomas up on his offer and let the others go. Art, in this case, all too closely imitates reality.

i just want to clarify that thomas has known them since they were children, their memories have just been wiped. he has partial memories so thomas remembers a bit more about their past than the others do
@KaizerHiwatari2 жыл бұрын
"You knew those kids for like an hour." A few days in the movies, but obviously much longer in the books. Also, Movie Thomas has some memories back at this point, so he might remember the other boys from their time before the maze. "There has to be more than one Connor in here." WICKD gives all the kids unique names. They probably have a spreadsheet somewhere they all consult, lol. The kids are also all named after famous figures, mostly scientists. Thomas is named after Thomas Edison. Newt is Isaac Newton. Chuck was Charles Darwin. Gally was Galileo. Alby was Albert Einstein. Teresa is Mother Teresa (LMAO). The only exception is Minho (the author claims it will be a future famous scientist, but he got the name from his niece's husband.) Littlefinger's character in this film is called Jensen. In the books he is also called Rat Man XD

It's little plot-holey, but supposedly the disease that Ben, Alby, and Thomas got in the Glade (The Griever sting) is a weakened form of the Flare virus (zombie disease). That's why the cure they use in the glade (that Teresa brings with her) won't cure a person who has the full-strength Flare virus. Ava mentions that "the younger generation was immune to the Flare," but that's not really the case. SOME of them are. So, some of the kids in the glade are immunes, but others are a control group of non-immune young people.
@wilhelm-z4t8 ай бұрын
I don't see a plot-hole in the films, and I don't see how the Griever inflicted disease can be a weakened form of Flare. The immunes are immune to Flare - period. They couldn't possibly exhibit symptoms, especially from a weakened form of Flare. Whatever the Grievers are injecting must be different from the Flare since the immunes can be infected by it. Remember Thomas was infected by it, and we know for certain he's an immune. It may cause symptoms like the Flare, but it isn't Flare. It also can't be communicable because WCKD wouldn't want all the subjects to die if one gets infected. In other words, to get Griever disease, you have to be injected/stung. Importantly, Griever disease is 100% curable by WCKD. Alby was cured, and Thomas was cured.

Great reaction here! I recently re-watched the first two films and read the first novel. I think Hunger Games and Maze Runner are the best dystopian YA franchises/series out there. Haven't seen GoT, so can't comment on it ha ha.

Honestly, I feel bad to people who easily say they just gonna end Winston. I mean I get it, to us, he probably just a random dude. But imagine he's your friend in the maze for 3 years. Can you just kill him that easy? I mean yes, we need to kill him, he's dangerous. But the way you said it, like, I'm gonna kill him right away.. Wow.. And by the way, he's the only one who picked the gun, and he helped them to hold the cranks in the hallway. I just hope people just put some respect for him.
