In this video I go over a quick process on how I make some easy templates to easily trace onto leather using a scratch awl. This is by no means a complete alternative to an acrylic template, however it is much cheaper and much better than using a paper template.

To prevent slip, glue a piece of cork to each side of the template. That way you can use either side if you have an asymmetrical item.

You can trace a pattern onto a leather sheet by wetting the leather, placing your acrylic template on the sheet and trace around it with a stylus. As for the vector file creation for your patterns, you can use a free program named Inkscape that generates SVG format vector files that can be saves as that or can also generate a pdf directly to a pdf file. You can also place dimensions with it as well.
