Here we will talk about the similarities & differences between MBA from IIM Calcutta, India and Masters in Management (MIM) from Mannheim University, Germany as per my own experience with both the institutions as a student.
Note: Although these are two specific programs, I think all the other top IIMs (BLACKI) operate in a similar way to IIM Cal and all the MIM programs in Europe similarly to Uni Mannheim.
Why should you listen to me?
I studied MBA from IIM Calcutta from 2013 - 2015 and later on did my second M.Sc. in management (MIM) from University of Mannheim from 2016 - 2018.
I also had the same questions when I was applying for both these programs and so I hope this video can help the next person who is seeking similar answers.
The link to the 6 tips video to turn around your career after CAT exam failure:
• Failed CAT exam 2022, ...
Also, I have had the opportunity of experiencing a lot of other things in life. I have:
- lived in the smallest of towns (Kirandul, Rihand) in India to the biggest cities (Delhi, Mannheim) in India and Germany,
- studied in smallest local schools to the best universities (DCE, IIM Calcutta, University of Mannheim) in India and Germany,
- graduated from Production and Industrial engineering with two additional masters (MBA, MIM) in Business / Management,
- cleared multiple national (CEE, IITJEE, NTPC off-campus, CAT) and global (GMAT) competitive exams,
- worked in variety of companies (NMDC, NTPC, KOEL, SAP, YogaDaan) from government to private, engineering to IT, big firms to small charities,
These experiences have taught me a lot of lessons which I would like to share with whoever can benefit from.

Do Manheim University take engineer grads in their mim program? I checked their eligibility criteria and its clearly mentioned that you should have studied undergrad in business field and atleast have 36 ects in business subject. Can you please clear this doubt and explain how you got an admit as an engineering grad or did they gave you a special admit cause of you iim tag?
@rohitthe14th
@rohitthe14th 8 ай бұрын
In my experience, in Germany you can easily switch between various fields if you have required credits. So, even as engineer, you can get into most business courses including mannheim MIM if you have the required 36 ECTS. I had 36 ECTS as I took a few business courses in DCE during my engineering bachelors. To be fair to all, uni mannheim had a policy to not consider master degree credits in selection for master in management program. So, my IIM degree credits ( also a masters program) were not considered in selection.

Hi Althaf, as an Alumnus there is no way to recommend anyone. For me it was pretty straightforward. I had 70% in graduation, 720 in GMAT and that was enough to get me through. I am thinking of offering a live Q&A session, but because my channel doesn’t have enough subscribers, KZbin has limited my live stream feature. But I am figuring that out and will soon do one. Till then, best of luck! 😊

Hi Aditya, sorry, a lot of my comments got automatically deleted due to some technical issue it seems. The answer I gave to Sai was "unfortunately no. Most abroad MBA programs ask for 2+ years of full-time experience at least. IIM MBA is a very rare MBA which allows freshers too. Still, an alternative for graduates with zero work experience is master in management." I hope this helps :)

@rohitthe14th
@rohitthe14th Жыл бұрын
Hi Amit, I think you are at the sweet spot to go for any of the two. MIM will cost you less money, more time and will ease you into a new country, culture. MBA will cost more money, less time, but might give you a slightly higher starting salary in European market. I was in your spot as well, and I took MIM because I wanted to really understand if Germany suits me and for that I needed time to explore various aspects of life in Germany. And I am glad, I selected MIM. Sorry for the late reply. I was sick. Best of luck :)

@@rohitthe14th I hope you are fine now. Thanks for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. Also, if you can clear my doubt on if age matter for MIM as I will be turning 28 this year and I have heard that MIM courses are for freshers.
@rohitthe14th
@rohitthe14th 11 ай бұрын
In general, yes, MIM has a younger crowd and many freshers. I guess, most of them are 22 to 26 yrs old when they start the course. But there is no where written that you can’t study MIM at 28 yrs old. I even met a few (when I was studying) who were 30+ yrs old and in MIM. In germany, nobody cares much about a few years here and there. Here people are more individualistic and decide whatever suits them best. Still, if you are overly concerned with you being older, you can go for MBA where you will be on the younger side of the batch 😄

I came to know the double degree which you would do in your second year at any of the colleges it has associated with. Is choosing that would incur extra cost? And would the following profile have any chance? - 3 years BSc Statistics (9 CGPA) - 1 Year PG Diploma in International Business( ignou) - german B2 certificate - 1.5 year work experience - ielts 8 - 1 more internship - Gmat above 650 Please share your suggestion. Hi Vishnu, yes, with very good GMAT, I will say you do stand a chance. Your graduation grades are a bit low, but if you can compensate with very good GMAT, it should be ok. Another thing that could help in Mannheim MIM is international exchange or work ex. For now, I will say just try your best and apply everywhere you feel ok with. Think where to go once you have a few calls. Best of luck :)

@@rohitthe14th thank you for the apt reply. There is a masters in global management courses(which I assume is the mim you mentioned) and an mba option as well. What would be an average amount of work experience for MBA and does govt work carry good weightage as relevant. Kindly share this as well. Thanks in advance
@rohitthe14th
@rohitthe14th 11 ай бұрын
Hi Vishnu, I think the min. Work ex required is 3 years for Mannheim Business School MBA. Other universities might have 2 or 3 yr as requirement for MBA as well. They don’t care if it is govt. or private, but during job search it is more helpful if your previous job was in something which Germans can relate to. For example in a world famous MNC, some German company, some very known work areas like IT, Data Science etc. The less they can understand what you did, the less relevance they will give to your work experience.

With 650 gmat, you will have higher chances in TUM as it only takes engineers. Also, if you do not plan to drastically change your focus, TUM MIM curriculum will suit you better as you are an engineer. I had offers from both too, but I went with Mannheim because I wanted more focus on business.
