Great discours Magdalena, how cool to learn some new things about Chopin - I had no idea he was working on a book of piano technique, or that he consulted with both Pleyel and Erard on the development of the piano. And beautiful performance of the waltz, which really is the epitome of Chopin's approach to the piano. Thanks for sharing!

This is of of the later and perhaps one of the most famous pieces of Chopin. It was used in many movies in early days of B&W cinema. There aren't many standard interpretation for it and each person played it differently. Howeve I like Rubenstein's and Horowitz's which are very different. I learned it over 30 years ago and still can't play it consistently. She also didn't play it consistently either although she is a Pol and plays piano million times better than me :)

Thank you for your lesson. Your interpretation of Chopin's waltz is interesting. I noticed you syncopated the waltz rhythm on the 2nd or 3rd beats in your performance. Did you intend to blend the waltz with a tint of mazurka?

While I would not want anyone to confuse the genre of waltz with the mazurka, I found it appropriate to allow my waltz to lilt (something that will later be known in the Viennese waltzes by Johann Strauss as "das Schleppen" - imagine the relationship between beats in the Blue Danube waltz). In fact, I like your interpretation and I played and taught my students this piece before in a similar way which I learned from Lipatti's recording. However, I received some critics from adjudicator regarding the rhythm when my student attended a local competition. I felt frustrated and confused. I play piano for about 2 years and i can play it completely. Not with correct fast tempo in main theme but pretty good and with fine rubato. So practice practice and dont give up.

I've had this feeling in the past. I thought I would never be able to play any of Chopin's Nocturnes and then after 2 years I did it! I also had the same feeling with this waltz but then I realised I was already playing pieces that were more difficult than this one and this will happend with you as you evolve on the piano, you will find that those pieces you were listening years ago wondering if you would ever get there have become completely playable! I recently had this with the Arabesque and couldn't believe it. Trust me we've all been there, you're gona make it and go even further than what you thought possible

I do use the pedal, but very judiciously (mostly just a quick tap on the first beat). Chopin really emphasized simplicity and clarity in his own playing, and I try to honor that. Thank you for listening!
