At the Navy League's 2014 Sea-Air-Space Exposition, MBDA Inc. has an F/A-18E Super Hornet scale model fitted with 12 dual mode Brimstone missiles. Incorporating an advanced dual mode seeker, Brimstone is effective against the most challenging, high speed and maneuvering targets over land and at sea.

It's a British missile, 100% designed right here, just under the overall arm of MBDA. The RAF used them to massive effect in Libya, I understand. One of the reasons, I keep saying to people, that Tanks are becoming little more than mobile coffins up against a full-spectrum enemy. We Brits invented the tank, now we've made it obsolete, pretty much.

***** Ever considered using Google before you post? MBDA is a British/French/Italian company, formed in 2001.

Its an attempt to break into the US market. I think MBDA is pissing into the wind doing this.

***** If you speak in terms of hold shares, MBDA is not just a British/Dutch/Italian company, it has three owners company (Airbus Group : 37,5 %, BAE Systems : 37,5 % and Finmeccanica : 25 %), So no, French also owns shares in MBDA and historicaly the first step which led to the creation of MBDA cames from the merge of the french missile company Matra with the british BAe dynamics.

***** French hold a large part of Airbus Group (ex EADs) leading the company with essencially the germans (but also spainish,italians...) They have especially many of the subsidiary companies which compose Airbus Group largely established in there Industrial landscape (Airbus, Aibus Defense&Space (ex Astrium), Airbus helicopter (ex Eurocopter), MBDA, ArianeSpace, Aerolia and even ATR) especially in south of France (Toulouse) but also all around France (Paris, Bourges, Bordeaux...). In MBDA in particular, French people provides a very high expertise in both project developpement (R&D) and products industrialization and they're very active as they're participating (and leading) in almost all major missile projects (Meteor for the new AESA Radar of Rafale and Eurofighter, Scalp, Mica, magic,Roland, Mistral etc...) but also in more fundamental research (ex: RamJet systems, hypersonic missiles...).

At $100,000 per shot, as quoted, it is ridiculously expensive just to kill one small boat, or maybe 3 boats, but for $300,000. THERE HAS TO BE MORE INEXPENSIVE SOLUTIONS OUT THERE THAN THIS ?

That's a rather unsophisticated understanding. A US Navy destroyer is worth $2 billion. A swarm of suicide boats could carry out a devastating attack if they got through and blew themselves up next to the destroyer. If you spent $1 million to take out ten boats, isn't that worth it to save lives? Given that an SM-2 missile costs around $2 million and a Tomahawk $1 million, being able to pop off ten shots for $1 million is a bargain. It's just like when you have people moan about spending $30,000 on a laser-guided bomb to take out a car carrying terrorists, and they complain about how expensive that is. Sure, it's expensive but what's the alternative? Send in a helicopter carrying troops to land just up the road and ambush it? I would rather spend $30,000 on a guided bomb to carry out a car with terrorists in it than risk the lives of our troops. Even if you don't care about the troops lives and all you care about is money, losing troops is expensive not only because of the loss of all the money invested in their training, but also because of the death benefit that has to be paid out to their families. You also need to keep in mind that we can *afford* it. If we were attacking a technologically unsophisticated country, people complain that we fire off expensive $1 million Tomahawks and drop $30,000 guided bombs on them. But it's precisely those expensive weapons systems that are the reason we are so much more powerful and capable than they are. Sure, we could send in troops using rifles and RPG-7s. That would be cheap. But it would also be much less effective, and we'd be likely to lose lives. I know what I'd prefer.
