Also, I find it so funny the Graders Notes I often see (and then don't see) on CGC Graded 9.6 Blank Sketches. Oftentimes, Artist's drawing boards have tons and TONS of Graphite on them that ends up getting on the back of the Blanks. You mentioned it yourself with the Harren Blank Sketch. Was that from Felix? I've seen him sell a few Blank Cover Sketches by the artists he reps and have wondered if CGC is an option? They can do individual submissions on our CGC accounts and have the Slabs shipped from CGC 👉👉 Us instead of going CGC 👉👉 Them 👉👉 Us. It amuses me that they downgrade a Blank Cover Sketch cuz of Graphite that happens to get on the back cover. I do wonder what CGC means by Art effecting the Grade on a book and how that would effect the Label designation. I do not expect them to Verify / Authenticate the Art. What CBCS does works: "Verified Signature: _. Sketch On Cover." There have been instances (in my own collection even) where the Ink or Paint from the Remarque has saturated the cover, causing it to warp. My ASM 362 came back Graded a 8.5 by CGC. I was expecting a 9.6. Randy Emberlin drew a badass Carnage Remarque. The 90's newsprint paper stock couldn't take the Inks. My Thor 21 Creees Lee Variant Jack Kirby Homage, however, is a 9.8! Creees Lee used paints to draw the God Of Hammers. It looks great. The cover is warped, though, from the way the paints dried. I'm not complaining it's a 9.8 at all. I got it in an eBay auction for a steal of $60 bucks. This Remarque would cost at least $50 to have done. So here's the funny part. I received it, and the back bottom corner was shattered missing a piece. It didn't crack in transit cuz no other pieces were even in the bag. CSA just missed it when they listed it. There was no way you could tell by the photos on the listing. Same thing goes for the warped cover from the Remarque. They offered me the $20 to re-holder it myself... but it having a warped cover, the last thing I want is the Grade to drop, right?? I asked them to help me re-holder it cuz of that. They did what I mentioned up top. CGC mailed it directly back to me. It stayed a 9.8! I have kept the Re-holder paperwork with the Slab for if anyone tries to tell me it's not a 9.8. 😅 CGC has had it twice now! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Honestly, the way I view it is that it is a Witnessed Remarque. I hate that a Grade can effect the value of a WITNESSED Graded Blank Sketch Cover. A $500 Commission shouldn't only be worth $175 cuz it Grades a 9.2. That $500 Commissioner still had to pay $60-80 just to have it encapsulated! Some artists even charge another $20 for Sketches if they're being Encapsulated! That absolutely blows my mind. It's one of the reasons I have switched to art paper, aside from the extra space it affords me and the artist working on it. Most artists will do a 9x12" Sketch for the same price as a Blank. That way, I can also spend that $60-80 in Grading fees with another artist. Over the course of a Convention, that can be another couple hundred bucks, which equals another Commission piece or a shit ton more signatures! Another hobby of mine is Hardcovers & Omnibus Collected Editions. I enjoy getting them signed. That, when it comes down to it, is truly what signatures are about. I love Signature Series Slabs as much as the next guy and have >150 Signed Slabs. With signed HCs, condition doesn't matter. Hardcovers can not be Graded. It's only about having the creator sign their work. I believe that's what CGC was about when they began. It turned into chasing numbers. At Indiana Comic-Con in March, I got 20 signatures (3 with Headshot Remarques) for a total of $140 bucks. Mark Bagley Signed 12 Hardcovers of mine over 2 days (10 Saturday | 2 Sunday) for FREE! That was so cool of him. I did Commission a Venom 9x12" Inked Headshot from him for $100.

I think the best way to go is just send in a couple , the ones that you are really doubtful about and if they come through ok you will know that you are good for going forward with the others.

I sent in a book that had been sitting because it was signed and remarked, and did not want to get the green label now that we have this opportunity. I’ve taken advantage of it. After watching what you just said, I hope the remarks do not negatively affect the book, and I still get that dreaded green label. Time will tell.

Grading the auto is the same as on cards.If the sig is neat to normal to that person it will get a 10 but if it’s sloppy it will get a lower grade

Small correction to something you said if I heard you right, you can submit a book with multiple Sigs. The 2 sig max is for the SIGNATURE GRADING service.

Got it - that seems a little confusing too. So I guess if you have 3+ sigs you indicate which ones they should focus on and authenticate? Is signature grading different than authenticating?

@@LongboxLoveAffair yes, different. Sig grading will get its own grade separate from book. it is just the grading of the sig (guess based on how clean it is?). To grade sig, it would have to pass authentication.

I'd hold off and let others be the guinea pig and learn whatever silly criteria cgc considers "damage". There's no harm with waiting/patience for those books

Send the sketch covers to CBCS and get it graded as “Art”. I honestly would just frame it instead of slabbing it, but that’s just me.

Since I have so many graded/authenticated sketches, that has been my focus (so I don’t have to debate the validity later in life, too). I get your point though.

I think you would only get a green label if the artwork has bled through onto the covers underneath the blanks. In my opinion this would be the only reason you might get a green for damage to the comic.

Yeah CBCS is a good option. I’ve never had them do a verified submission on a sketch, though.

They’re raw because I didn’t have access to or want to deal with getting a witness lol. I like having verifiable signatures so I will want to grade the sketches at some point. But I may wait to see how this all shakes out.

blank sketch covers are meant to be drawn on. I think CGC doesn't like it when it is a normal cover printed with art with another sketch added on to it. Where it detracts from the printed image. But really I think they should just label it all and authenticate it all. They are just being picky and wanting to get more money out of you. Blank sketch covers sell just fine not being slabbed. Save your dough.

Sounds about right, although remarques are so common now. Hard to fathom how a sketch would negatively impact a grade. And if it does, lower the grade (don’t green label it).

Just get one graded and see? If it comes back with the green label, just crack it out…no big deal, we all know how easy it is to crack a slab. Lol it’s really not that big of a deal imo

My point is that there is just too much unknown with CGC, particularly with the “negatively impacts” statement. It’s no big deal, sure, but it’s costly to have books graded. Why not know what to expect ahead of time?
