I'm sitting in my office pod in Calgary Canada with my headphones on listening to this mbira collection. I'm the only black person in my office in a sea of white faces. My mind has travelled back to when I was 8 years old when we would travel kumaroots during school holidays and I would listen to my uncles play 'this weird instrument' Now 40 years later sitting here in my office The Experience is priceless!

Your comment got me thinking big time man, it's a pity that we are now just listening to these masterpiece melodies far away from home. When I listen to this type of music my mind never rest as I will be thinking of back home, how I miss everything, my family and the environment itself. I feel like i just need to give up on everything and go back home but on the other hand the responsibilities we have and the desire to have a better future shutters all these dreams and thoughts of going home..... Where ever we are guys lets work hard with a plan to go back and start / finish whatever plans were in the pipelines from our elders etc.... We can make Zimbabwe great again. Peace, Love & Respect!

Sekuru Gora/Thomas Wadharwa's voice has a haunting quality. You can hear it on Shanje and Mahororo. What a man! Totally committed to mbira music and yet rarely given the honour he so richly deserves. Rest in peace, Sekuru Gora. I hope muchajurujwa nevanokudai as you say.

Nyadzonya Mbira inspired so many and you hear their beat in the late Master Chivero's sounds. Their rather fast rhythm and use of many notes are great challenge when you have a partner or 2 to play with. They always made it a point the hosho did not dominate the mbira so you can glean all the notes used. Nice challenge for mbira players: try the mabvumira/mahon'era(backing code on Rozi).

@Makepekepe018 жыл бұрын
I think the song is about a man who pleading to his ancestors after a string of bad events eg. its rare to encounter a white wolf in african mythology. Or when he says maiwe mukanzi ndichaviga ( I may have to bury my wife) the wife may be etremely sick .

I'm looking for the mbira song that has lyrics that say "Tateguru wangu magaragara seiko musina kuuya....garagara" 😢 who sang that song?
@dlockley10 жыл бұрын
Ngoto Yakaipa sounds an awful lot like Hwa Hwa performed by Thomas Mapfumo. That being said, who knows where Mapfumo got those lyrics. I know Mukanya often used traditional lyrics that weren't entirely his own. All that aside, it sounds like kari mugomba and/or taireva from the traditional repertoire.
@tarirai10 жыл бұрын
Ngoto yakaipa literally mean that alcohol is bad (Ngoto comes from the waxed paper containers that modern traditional Zimbabwean brew is sold in), and Hwahwa means alcohol. It is the same song, and the words are the same. And you are right in that it is the traditional mbira tune that Mukanya samples truly.
@Zvembira8 жыл бұрын
+dlockley Mukanya makes use of a lot of traditional tunes. So you will find with various mbira recordings you might find similar lyrics.
@tinashebanhamombe6052 жыл бұрын
That's true even the first song on this list Shanje mukanya also sang that song as it is.
