This was a fascinating podcast! I'm a fiction writer and studied comparative mythology for several years. You are so close when it comes to art, myth, and religion. The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers is a good place to find out more info on that stuff. Campbell comes from a different era so some of his word choices are a bit old fashioned. But according to him, storytelling in the form of myth and the re-enactment of mythic stories is where the various artforms originated. A myth is a story that orients a person within their physical and cultural environments. It can be what we consider scientific, political, or religious in theme and topic. Or some combination thereof. Ancient people didn't make an intellectual distinction between the three: Art / Myth = Tech + Lifestyle. The myths were told and re-enacted as ritual to achieve very specific and tangible ends related to survival. Also, burial items in Neanderthal graves suggest the mythic worldview is older than modern homo sapiens. If I'm remembering accurately.

I believe we cannot be unique, and it is wishful thinking. We can only be different and similar in varying degrees. I suppose you could call this unique to a degree. But you cannot be truly unbiasedly unique because our brains are wired for comparison. We only have references and inspiration, so the art we create must be comparable to other similar things. This leads me to conclude that there is no such thing as uniqueness unless it is the first step in a new direction. But that first step in new directions is naturally conscious or subconscious, also stemming from already existent concepts. Even the first things are not truly unique because if it is the first human to do this, they needed to observe it from an already existent source, such as behavior from nature or other beings. So, I disagree with the unique sound design claim. If you create a unique growl bass, it is, to me, not unique but rather shares similarities with other already-done sounds. To less-caring individuals, it's the same thing, so it's not truly unique. I understand the pride and dedication and work that goes into getting a cool tone out of a sound you've made, but I think we could be more pressure-free if we didn't have such an insane obsession with identity and try to resonate more about the similarities, connections to other thinkers, and how cool it is to not feel the need to try to be something special, while we already know it is impossible to be something truly special. And partly to motivate us in a maybe burnout-y and contagious way, to be more productive and ironically meet societal expectations, while wrongfully getting tricked into being a fully competent and autonomous power, while in reality we just try to imitate those who are called unique but in reality conform to this idea of uniqueness.

❤ So glad you brought-up the genre thing. Genres are so funny. I told some folks that I think house is the Italian food of electronic music styles. Just like how a multicultural group out to dinner often decides Italian as the group decision, house feels like that. 😂
