About this video: On my channel, I post monthly videos compiled of clips of MBTA commuter trains on the Newburyport/Rockport Line, the eastern most commuter rail line on the north side of MBTA’s system. The line runs from Boston’s North Station to Beverly, where it then splits and continues on to both Newburyport and Rockport. In the February 2024 edition, clips that appear were filmed in the following towns: Beverly, Gloucester, Hamilton, and Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Only 23 1700s are active now since 1718 is out of service from a collision and I bet it’ll be out of operation for over a year. Hope it’ll be repaired and not scrapped. It reminds me of 1710 which was involved in a sideswipe with an excavator on the Franklin Line on October 17, 2006. The excavator wasn’t sturdy on its trucks and tipped over off of them and struck 1710 on its side. The car was sent to Kawasaki Rail Car in Yonkers for repairs in fall 2007 and arrived back the following year. In May 2011, the car was considered damaged beyond repair with one side covered in blue, sad. 😢😢 In October 2013, 1710 along with 511, 1525 and 612 were one step closer to going bye-bye forever. By the afternoon of April 23, 2014, the 511, 1525, 612 and 1710 were all gone in existence and never to be seen again. The excavator was doing some track work on the line at the time of the accident. Luckily this one will be repaired and not scrapped, only minor damage reported, thank god. I can’t bear to lose another 1700.

June 14, 2024: No more 1600s, the last one, 1647, is now officially dead and all of the upcoming Newburyport/Rockport Line videos we’ll only be seeing some 1800s and 100% 1700s for cab cars. I’m sad. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 1647 fought well and hard, may it rest in heavenly peace.😪

I also heard similar, but 1647 hasn’t officially been deactivated so there’s still a chance that we could see more from it in the future

I just chased the geometry train with the 1647 and 1065 on the Needham and franklin lines. It’s still in operation, surprisingly !

No way 1647 is still in service, I’m so happy, because I’m not ready for them to go, but 1647 won’t be in service for much longer it seems like. Sorry if I’m asking, but what is the geometry train?

It’s all good - the geometry train is just a track inspection train essentially. MBTA normally operates theirs with an Amtrak coach that has been fitted with rail inspection equipment. I posted a video of it in operation not long ago (as well as several times in previous years). It normally runs on the whole system around 4 times per year.

I might come railfan the New/Rock lines (other than chelsea where i've been before) this summer since I get out of school tomorrow. What are your top 5 stations that I should visit?

The best places to see mostly constant action are Beverly Depot, Salem, and Swampscott. If you don’t mind slower traffic, the area between Ipswich and Newburyport has a ton of interesting shot possibilities. There’s also a pretty good flow of extras throughout the week, but those are sort of unpredictable and are things that I see separately from normal traffic

I enjoyed the video I am lol 😆 cause there is two different numbers on 1127 one on left is correct the one on the right looks like it says an upside down 1116 I zoomed in on my phone and it looks like it says that number lol 😆 😄 and also what is up with 1139 lights 😄 the two top are led the one on right is an led one on left is a regular light bulb 💡 lol 😆

Yes you are right about the 1127, I have no idea why they thought putting that board in there was a good idea 😂 the 1139 had a burnt out ditch light and they didn’t have any LED replacement bulbs, that’s why there’s two different lights there
