WHAT IS MBTI?
The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is a personality assessment tool that assigns individuals to one of 16 personality types based on four preferences: Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I), Sensing (S) or Intuition (N), Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and Judging (J) or Perceiving (P). These preferences are linked to cognitive functions, which are the underlying mental processes that influence how individuals perceive information and make decisions. The MBTI provides insights into an individual's preferred ways of gathering information, making choices, interacting with the world, and organizing their lives.
WHAT ARE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS?
Cognitive functions are psychological processes that are involved in various aspects of how we perceive, interpret, and interact with the world around us.
There are eight commonly recognized cognitive functions, organized into four pairs of opposites:
1. Extraverted Thinking (Te) - focuses on objective analysis, logical reasoning, and systematic decision-making based on external facts and data.
2. Introverted Thinking (Ti) - emphasizes subjective analysis, internal logic, and the development of precise mental models to understand and explain the world.
3. Extraverted Feeling (Fe) - prioritizes external harmony, social norms, and the emotional well-being of others, seeking consensus and understanding through empathy.
4. Introverted Feeling (Fi) - places importance on internal values, personal ethics, and individual emotional experiences, seeking authenticity and alignment with one's inner principles.
5. Extraverted Sensing (Se) - engages with the immediate sensory experiences and details of the external world, seeking excitement, novelty, and opportunities for action.
6. Introverted Sensing (Si) - focuses on recalling past experiences, creating internal frameworks for understanding based on personal memories, and seeking stability and familiarity.
7. Extraverted Intuition (Ne) - explores possibilities, connections, and patterns in the external world, generating ideas, and seeking inspiration from the environment.
8. Introverted Intuition (Ni) - seeks deep insights, underlying meanings, and future possibilities through internal contemplation and unconscious processing.
While everyone possesses all eight cognitive functions to some degree, personality type theories suggest that individuals have a dominant function, which is most comfortable and natural for them, along with a supporting auxiliary function, tertiary function, and inferior function. These combinations of functions contribute to the unique personality types and cognitive styles in each individuals.
