Love mbunas, but then, I'm biased. Actually bought 2 mbunas that were labelled as peacocks, but now that the pandemic is happening, I'm glad I don't need to take peacock-level measures.

Substrate looks good, and good that it buffers the water. I'm using pool filter sand for my tetra tank; looks good and I recommend it if you're not keeping hard water fish. It's cheap too!

First vid I've ever seen of yours and I loved it! Definatly will be watching other vids😏 Also I'm currently in the process of setting up an epic Mbuna tank. Im going to get all 3 of the species of fish you have along with a few aceis, electric blue johanni's, & a pair or two of saulosi's. I've actually kept freshwater fish for over 12 years... I've had every from my first fish tank being goldfish. Then separately over the years kept Anglefish, Discus, Goramis, catfish, multiple verities of African Cichlids and of course tetras.... and being a little kid a lot of them were kept together in the same tanks😂 But now I'm taking it way more serious and sticking to fish from the same region & making habitats built specifically to mimic where there from. And in turn this will be my first African Cichlid tank that I'm going to set up and keep! I've got all the needed stuff to set it up... got a nice custom tank I've had for forever that was from craigslist. Building a better stand and a lid... and I play of overstocking with young guys so I got a canaster filter that's made for a bigger tank to help with all the extra waste. But now I'm in the process of learning how to keep a higher PH water, keeping it stable and motoring it constantly. And making sure my Mbunas live a long life in perfect system to their water peramiters. So I'm looking forward to learning all of that over the next few months and end up having as epic of a tank as yours!💯 (PS. Ik this vid is a few months old and this is a really long comment... but... yolo😂)

Hi, i realise i’m like 3 years too late… But i have a 30G that is all set up as a community tank but i wanna change. it’s 3 foot long. I wanna get 6/8 Mbunas, Yellow Labs, Zebras, Jonannii, Saulosi, Tangerine, Pindani etc, all juveniles, and then i’m moving out soon and wanna get a 55G 4 foot tank in my new house as it will be my own and not parents so more space and then when that tank is cycled move then over and get another 10 or so mbunas like Rustys and Acei and then a few more so as to not ruin the cycle, what are your thoughts on this? think for the few months i could deal with 6/8 to see if i get on with them before spending lots of a bigger tank and such x

@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you’re overstocked. Probably have room for some more fish but you have to pay attention to male/female ratio also especially once they become sexually mature. Monitor the behavior and see if anyone is getting picked on and make sure there are plenty of hides/caves

Beautiful tank friend. Quick question. Do you keep your cichlids at the 8.0ish ph level? My water is pretty neutral and I figure most fish stores are as well. Can they live well and healthy at 7.0 ph? I don't have any at this time but plan to in a couple of months.
@jordantate_4 жыл бұрын
No, ph is measured in 10x. So Mbunas which prefer a ph of about 8, would be at a ph 10x lower than what it should be if you had them at a ph of 7.

looking to start a tank 55 gallon. How often do you change water?
@sonjalevy495 жыл бұрын
Hey, nice tank! I was wondering, how often do you do water changes? I’m planning a cichlid tank with a 90. And I’m trying to figure out filtration details. Thanks!
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
I do water changes weekly. A lot of Cichlid keepers will “over stock” their tank for aggression issues and do more water changes and over filtrate to make up for the bioload (poop) from the extra fish. Just remember that the size of tank, a mount of filtration you have, amount of fish you have, and how often you do water changes are all directly connected and you can lower one by raising the other if that make sense. I like to go with moderate to heavy stocking but not too much with lots and lots of filtration and that way I can do weekly 30% water changes and not worry.
@sonjalevy495 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense. What filters do you have on the 55 then?

I have 4 cichlids 2 oscars and a placo in a long 55 gallon tank. I have lots of rocks and good hiding spot for the cichlids, and the oscars usually rome in the middle. Is that a good setup? Like is it not healthy or is it fine, ik cichlids do good with oscars but idk with the tank size and the number, do you think it’s okay?
@WildFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
First let me say that I do not have personal experience with Oscars so what I’m going to tell you comes from other hobbyists I know and trust. 2 Oscars by themselves in a 55 is probably pushing it but can be done. I think many would say the 4 Africans Cichlids shouldn’t go with them and I personally wouldn’t do it. I’m not saying you can’t do it and have success but you may run into issues. Hiding spots will help as well as lots of filtration and water changes. As the fish grow, you could run into aggressiveness from spawning. What kind of pleco is it? Once again, I am not telling you you can’t have a common pleco in a 55 but If it is one, I wouldn’t do it myself. In my opinion all it will do is make your tank dirtier and force more water changes in order to keep a healthy tank.
@averageaydon5 жыл бұрын
Lucky Schmuck's Fish Cave yes it’s a common placo, but it’s pretty big. And I don’t mind the water changes, but the oscars and cichlids are still very young so I thought it could work out, but I have people who can take the fish if it gets out of hand. But thank you for the feedback, just wanted to get some word from an experts since I’m really starting to like cichlids, i really do a lot of it by myself with help from my step dad Since I’m only 15. So every tip helps me to grow and learn. Thank you!

Yellow labs do not get a lot of attention. I have had them for 30 years, and although quite common, they are one of the most beautiful Mbuna and with a lot of personality. One trait that I find distinctive is that they live 10 years whereas many other Africans start to deteriorate in 5 years
