Good reaction to one of the greats! You asked about whether the lyrics or the beats came first…this was from his debut album, ILLMATIC…it was historic because it was the first time we saw an all-star lineup of producers brought in to bless the tracks…this one was laced by PETE ROCK (who you also hear on the hook). The other producers on the album were DJ PREMIER, LARGE PROFESSOR, Q-TIP, and L. E. S. I believe he had many of the songs lyrics beforehand but he also worked through some of the songs after he got the beats.
