Atmospheric pressure and the pressure at the surface of an open container of liquid are equal because the surface of the liquid is exposed directly to the atmosphere, creating a boundary where the atmospheric molecules exert pressure. This pressure is transmitted evenly across the surface of the liquid, meaning that the pressure at the surface level matches the atmospheric pressure. This equality is why we use atmospheric pressure as a reference when discussing pressures within open systems, such as lakes or open containers.
