Watching the finals this year, the rinks are too small. The players are so big and fast now that they are on you within a second. Increasing the size of the NHL rinks to somewhere between current NA and Olympic size would do wonders for the game.

When asked about the ceiling of Reinbacher, Hughes answered second pair D... Picking at 5 for a second pair D when you could have picked a potential superstar foward hurts. I really like Reinbacher, he will be a great player, but Michkov could be a superstar. Unless he said he did not want to play here, then there's no need for that discussion. We will see in the next few years if Hughes and Gorton made the right decision. Montreal seems to put a lot of emphasis on character and I guess Bobrov knew a thing or two about Michkov. Maybe his attitude was not in line with what the Habs wanted. I just hope we don't regret that pick. Personally, I'm not impressed with Bobrov and Gorton drafting in New York. Let's hope they do better here.

Buium isn't talked about for 2nd overall because he's below average sized for a defenseman (average in the NHL is 6"1 200llb) and he's a LD. There's a world of difference between can play both sides and should play both sides. There's going to be a side he's better at and that's LD because he shoots left. A 6"2 RD that can do some of everything you want from a D is obviously preferable. RDs are rarer and and he's above average size for a defenseman. The size matters. As size becomes more and more important what is small vs big by NHL standards is changing

Fact is, there were 6 teams that decided to skip over Michkov. There are a few obstacles facing Michkov--He has to play for Torts, and he is 5'10. Reinbacher will be a solid first pairing dman for a long time. Kent Hughes has done a tremendous job drafting and trading. Taking the best player available is, and always has been the best approach.

Grant, we Habs fans have been second guessing Habs 1st round draft picks ever since Doug Wickenheiser (may he r.i.p.) was selected over Denis Savard, and this century the Louis Leblanc selection. You also mentioned KK was selected by a different management team however that is inaccurate given the players you mentioned, Caufield, Guhle & Mailloux were also selected by the same management team i.e. Bergevin. Slaf, Mesar & Reinbacher are the 1st round picks selected by Hugo.

He’s small but that fits his playstyle perfectly. He really reminds me of Patrick Kane with how he uses his hands in tight spaces. Watch his games and you’ll see. His hands are super underrated. His shot is also absurd. And he can pass as good as anyone I’ve seen. He’s an all around great player from what I’ve watched. Even on defense he can’t really check but he’s always in the right spot.

I was all-aboard the Michkov train. I was mad as heck when they picked Reinbacher at the time. But a year later with a calmer approach… if it’s really true that Michkov has character issues… it is not impossible he turns into a Yakupov type of shitshow. So no… I don’t think we can YET say : DR was a mistake, MM was the way to go. The Rule of waiting 5 years before judging still applies.

They will obviously compare the level of players they become. If Michkov becomes an elite 100 pt guy and Reinbacher is just a decent player then its clear Michkov is better. If Reinbacher is a top pair stud and Michkov is defensive liability headcase you cant build around then Reinbacher is better etc.

I don't think it will be that easy to tell. There are plenty of players that are great during the regular season, but when the intensity and physicality is cranked up during the playoffs, they become ineffective. These are often small, skilled finesse players (not always of course). That's what scares me the most with Michkov. Looks like a player that will rack up a lot of points during the season, but be mostly invisible during the playoffs. They often cost a fortune because of the reg season points total but ultimately they don't make you win.

Flyers passed up Caufield for York. Twice. Turn about is fair play. In the end, they each get a good defenseman and goal scorer (potentially). It’s all good. They both got what they needed. And the KHL did make it official today.

Who knows who will be better in 5 years. One thing I do know, Reinbacher is a good kid, a team player. Michkov on the other hand, according to people that have been around him, say he's got character issue , diva like issues. Do you want a guy like this in your team ? Bobrov knew more than anyone.
