Cleaning their teeth is another maintenance. My daughter thought way ahead. Knew she was going to have a 60 lb dog and acclimated her Wilson to baths in the shower, nail trimming with a dremmel and teeth cleaning with dental tools. He practically goes to sleep during nails and teeth. He has no stress and it's a beautiful thing to see. You must have confidence before you can give it to your pup.

Wow, the mesh bag trick is a game changer for me. I have a Maltese and even though I tried to pull back the fur around the nails, inevitably I would not get them all and my dog reacted badly. With the mesh bag, it works great and we both are much calmer about this. Thanks so much!

This is such a great video! Thank you! I've watched loads of them, over the last week, and this one ranks up there with the best. I've never clipped my dog's nails, because I've been too scared. Plus, he's got both light and dark nail to boot. My Vet has done it throughout my dog's life, and it's saved me the stress. But since mine is a Hollistic Vet, who doesn't con her patients' owners into dangerously over vaccinating their pets, our visits are pretty far apart. Needless to say, my buddy's nails turn into claws in the time between visits, and she can only safely clip a small bit off the tip of each nail. This doesn't help the situation very much at all. With him being an active Aussie Border Collie, It's getting to the point where I'm worried about his comfort, so I've got to man up and just do it. In the past, I've tried grinding, but that's been difficult too. Videos like yours, and the comments that come with them, really help me to feel more confident. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!!

Thanks. I hate trimming my little Holly's nails, as many of them are black. I had the vets office do them once, and I think they hit the quick, as she has been harder to work with about nails since then. Now I'm trying to learn how to do it right so that I am the only one trimming them. Thank you............have subscribed.

That flashlight trick is fantastic. My dog had a bad experience with the vet doing his nails, and I haven't been able to take him to a groomer because we're still training around his extreme separation anxiety (was a stray dog for who knows how long before I adopted him). I feel a lot more confident trimming his nails regularly now.

Love Yorkies. Got one too. Such little feet and nails. I only cut them in the full sun, so I can see where to clip. The net trick is neat, but it will only work with a quiet dog. Putting the feet into a bowl of water works to! Brush wet hair up the foot, with a slicker brush

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Ezaz Khan Rommel! Yes, the flashlight will work on black nails as well. It is a lot harder to see the quick though, so you need to hold the flashlight a little closer. You will see that the nail is a little more opaque where there is no quick. It's really important that you don't cut too much off until you're comfortable with visualizing the "safe to cut" area. So be conservative with your first couple of rounds of clipping! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

We have 3 and it's always a challenge but I don't blame my babies, I had accidents in the past, if they look to nervous we do 1 paw And continue the next day, I just tell them is ok baby we have all our lives to keep cutting nails lol!! 🐶🐶🐶 🥰 I groom all 3 of my babies a yorkie, corgy and a shitzu Thank you for sharing 😉

I've been working on trimming down a rescue dogs overgrown nails, he's got super thick black nails, I was able to get quite a bit off, but I'm not sure how long to wait to trim them again. They're definitely not the length they should be yet... I didn't want to hit the quick, when should I trim them down again, and do you have any suggestions on what more i could do about his overgrown nails? Thanks!
@TomCatFromMA
@TomCatFromMA 3 жыл бұрын
1. From a veterinarian: If you cannot see the quick even with lighting, cut the nail in small increments and look at it head on. When you start to see the rings surrounding the quick at the cut part, stop cutting. 2. It's far easier to trim the hair covering the nails than trying to move the hair out of the way. Try doing this in two separate interactions. Trim hair one day and perhaps wait till the next day to cut the nails for minimum stress on the dog. The longer I take to accomplish these tasks, the more impatient my dog gets. 3. A trick I've seen but not yet tried is to wear a hat or headband and smear a small amount of peanut butter on it. You will need to replenish it a couple of times. Best not to use a lot as the dog will devour it quickly. My dog gets a short spell of hiccups if she eats too much at once. Let the dog keep licking it even if you don't see any more peanut butter. Only add more if the dog loses interest.

Get your dog to enjoy being on its belly and work on its toes from below if you take normal Clippers and just use the blade to shave a sliver after sliver or you can use a low powered Dremel with sandpaper attachment and once you start seeing the skin the quick you can see where you can cut the nail back to. You can even chase the quick back for overgrown nails overtime you may need to trim them once a week for those or file them I should say. I hate to say it but working around horses and working on their hose from underneath and working with the bear Huff method really helped me realize it's a lot easier especially for dark toe dogs to work from underneath their nail

Does the light trick work on dark nails? My Schnoodle has dark nails so the quick isn't easily seen.

Hi there, Barbyl W! Thanks for subscribing! I find the scissor style clippers to be a little more manageable, especially with dogs who don't like having their nails cut. The guillotine style clippers are just as efficient, but I really like how easily I can adjust the angle of the cut with the scissor style. Hope this helps! ~Ken
