This show will always be synonymous with Dionne Warwick, but Marilyn also had a magical energy about her on it. She sounds good singing anything, and she always looks beautiful. People commenting about missing Andy are right. He had talent. I like his songs and his singing style. I remember him on Solid Gold. But even on that show you could see that he was struggling. There were episodes when he was a bit off and sweating way too much, and one who knows the signs could tell that he was high. Marilyn had to use many guest hosts to cover for him because he was absent a lot. I remember he was only on the show for about one or two seasons before the producers got tired of him and fired him. He never really got to be a part of the huge success of the Bee Gee's with his brothers, which was something that he really wanted. He struggled with depression over that. He had a decent solo Top 40 career but it didn't last long because he was fired by the record label too. Then he had the misfortune of falling hard in love with women who didn't love him back the same way. Seems he tried to cover up his depression and insecurities with coke for many years, and when he decided to turn things around and try for a comeback it was just too late. That was too bad because his brothers were seriously trying to help him pull himself up and relaunch his career just before he died. He might have stopped using long before if the people close to him had shown him tough love and kept encouraging him instead of always blowing him off, putting him down, and firing him. He reminds me of a few of the patients I've worked with in addiction recovery. They're not bad people, just weak, lack motivation, low self-esteem, and need a LOT of patience and guidance. Making the break from substance addiction is not as easy as some people think.

Gibb was a right good singer. Marilyn is one of the best, straight up, no gimmicks singers I have heard. Karen Carpenter was another. To me, gimmicks would mean extraneous runs and trills, over singing, fake accents, etc.
@evelynjapson48378 жыл бұрын
perfect duet
@wmden18 жыл бұрын
+Evelyn Japson I can't disagree with that. I do wish they had keyed the song a couple of steps higher so Gibb could use that falsetto and Marilyn could have shined, even more than she did.

@Elegant Oprah Notice I said, "extraneous". Nothing wrong with a few to add interest to a song, as the few in this song, that, I believe, were actually written. An example of what I am referring to would the the way "The Star Spangled Banner" is often sung, by pop singers, at sporting events, taking away from the song. Sometimes, less is more.
@jfq72233 жыл бұрын
@Elegant Oprah Or everyone on American Idol type shows. When they comprise 70% of a song they are gimmicks.
