In this episode I am discussing Modal or "McCoy Tyner" Voicings for the Guitar. These are chords built in compound 4ths and moved diatonically through the modal scale. They are best used on guitar in sets of 3 or 4 stacked 4th intervals. They can also be used in single notes lines.

Rick, I can't tell you how many times I've done this with 4ths and have never seen anyone else do it until YOU !! hehe. 4ths can be so much fun and weirdly spacial, leaving you feeling unresolved and hanging, a kind of weird limbo, despite being completely tonal. Nice one, Bro !! As always, thankyou for sharing !!

This is a great introduction to stacked 4th voicings, particularly in this modal approach. I also like the sound of triads in 4ths and especially their inversions for creating more tension in comping or single note lines. Thanks a lot Rick; your videos are helping me find some directions to look into and giving me reasons to practice again. I'd been having some difficulty in what to do as a musician in the last year (2016). Your videos have been extremely encouraging... and talk about prolific!!! I'll need to buy your book as soon as I can. (times are really tight at the moment) Best regards from Montreal! -Glenn

Rick you're such a generous guy, a great teacher and an inspiring musician. Thanks for all the lessons, stories and insights. Having never been to music school or even taken much basic music instruction, you've been so valuable for my development. Don't sweat the trolls, you have to pity them really, all the wonderful things you can do with time in this life and they choose to do that...

I got this information years ago out of a Ted Green book called Cord chemistry and he essentially has these voicings for each note in the Do-Re-Mi fa so la ti do scale so you can play melodies with it I stumbled on how to use it a year or so after I learned it cuz he didn't explain how to use it he just said if you take this g13 with the 9 on the top 7th on bottom and take it up diatonically you get these chords. I was playing with it one day and I played part of the melody to when you wish on a Star and I didn't instantly recognize what the melody was I had to figure what where does that come from and once I figured it out then I thought we'll let me try to do the whole song and you can do any song it's a wonderful thing wonderful absolutely wonderful

Funny thing about "Quartal " voicings, they can be used in sooooo many ways. I first heard of them with the "Trane" and McCoy Tyner late 60/early 70's? on "my favorite things " They are so versatile in the right situations ! Soooo many uses ! Thanks for bringing it up, it can really "spice up" so many progressions ! Thanks for you're lessons ! I watch and learn from every one of them !

Wow, that was great Rick! This is one of my favorite videos to date. Easy to understand and immediately useful. Thanks. I've go my synth set up now so I can hold a chord/pad in the background like you using a sustain pedal - it really helps working out leads, and modal playing, etc. on the guitar. Those spammers and trolls need to be spanked.

Rick, your vids are so interesting. You are a treasure. Did a P4 tuning on my axe a few yrs ago n seldom go back to standard. With quartal harmony its very helpful reducing the number of voicings one hs to learn. Three to 6 note voicings can be accomplished w litte effort n sound great. Ive heard them called "adult" chord voicings! They sound nice when used exclusively for awhile or mixed w tertiary harmony n used as subs.

Hey rick, great videos. I learned this concept from one of Tyner's violinists! I was hoping one of these days you could expand on the "conversion to minor" concept that Martino talks about and show it on some tunes. Also could you tackle the Lydian chromatic concept sometime if you know anything about that?

(( How awesome would it be to compose an entire JazZ instrumental piece within a range of one octave (?) Each instrument would have its own appointed range but would never play outside of its octave. )) Relearning some JazZ standards within a narrow voicing/range would be a great challenge too.

Great topic and video Rick. Just a quick question, you have any points on jazz fingerstyle(or fingerstyle in general)? And solo jazz guitar as well.
@RickBeato
@RickBeato 7 жыл бұрын
It's important to be able to play fingerstyle if you are a jazz guitarist. It opens up the possibility of playing contrapuntally which is difficult to do by using just a pick. I would say learn some classical guitar pieces to practice it.

Hello Rick I have a question about someone with absolute pitch. How high or low (frequency) can the pitch go in order for them to know the note? In other words, if they hear 440Hz, they say A. What if they hear 22000Hz? Or 55Hz? Both of them are A as well. Oh, and another question, what if you tune your A to 430Hz? Will they be able to adapt to the new tuning or they get confused? In other words, how accurate must a note be for them to get it right? Thank you
