Contributed to Coltrane's sound more than most folks realize. He was essential to it sounding fluid. Only one McCoy.

coming up in Coltrane's shadow, who knew Tyner was a front man this dynamic!? he plays with verve. his expressions are true. love hearing this album. thanks! ♫¸.•*¨♥✿♪ ... thank you McCoy Tyner - Piano / Ron Carter - Bass /Elvin Jones - Drums! as Mccoy's involvement with Coltrane came to an end in 1965. Coltrane's music was becoming much more atonal and free; he had also augmented his quartet with percussion players who threatened to drown out both Tyner and Jones: Tyner said then, "I didn't see myself making any contribution to that music... All I could hear was a lot of noise. I didn't have any feeling for the music, and when I don't have feelings, I don't play" ... Tyner is more the culmination of a past he'd never partake, coming into his own just as Coltrane transitions from avant garde into spiritual sound. in 1962, Dolphy left Cotrane and Jimmy Garrison replaced Workman as bassist. From then on, the "Classic Quartet" came to be known, with Tyner, Garrison, and Jones, which produced searching, spiritually driven work. looking back on that phenomenon i think Tyner is a product of that change, a sound maker in his own right - "it takes a trio to make a quartet sing!"
