Connor McDavid is on pace for one of the best careers in NHL history, drawing comparisons to the likes of Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky... But is Jaromir Jagr a closer comparable? In this video, we highlight statistical parallels between McDavid and Jagr while asking the question: can Connor McDavid score 2,000 points?

If crosby never missed a game 2k points was on the table but there is no way he will do it now, mcdavid definitely has a chance if he can keep things up especially if he has more 150 point seasons but im sure he is more concerned on team success than point totals now.

Just did a quick check, he missed 2004 (obviously) but had he been able to play and scored similar to 2003-04, and then had all his pts in KHL been in NHL for 08-09, 09-10 and 10-11, he'd have been a bit shy of 2200 pts (still more than 670 pts shy of Gretzky)

His game has drastically changed over the past 4 years. This also happens to be when the Oilers pp took off and that's not a coincidence. His in zone play early in his career was still good but now he isn't just the best off the rush player but the best in the Ozone. Players can no longer bully him in the slower areas. He uses his size and puck handling to win the majority of puck battles now.

in jagr's case, not so much couldn't, but just didn't. jagr spent 3 years in the KHL in the middle of his career during which he would have easily hit 2K. mind you, coulda, woulda, shoulda would have had 66 at 2500 at the very least if healthy, and possibly ahead of 99. but mario wasn't healthy. jagr and mcdavid are not the same. i suppose with the speed and skill each possessed, you have a point, but 97 is a center and 68 was a winger. i mean, who really is a closer comparable? it's hard to find. maybe crosby, but even his game is quite different from mcdavid.

Such a shame Lemieux couldn't play all those 20 years and at full strength and Jagr went to Russia in his prime, just when he was doing 60 goal/100 points seasons in Rangers. Those all time statistics would've looked very different. Lemieux would almost certainly be second in points and first in goals and Jagr would be third in points and possibly second in goals, after Mario.

Conner can't bring a cup to Edmonton when the Oilers defensive models keep watching the puck and not taking the player. He's absolutely the best overall player in the game. He could easily score 50 goals every year if that was his focus. Leon is Conners Malkin, a true beast that will forever be in the shadow. When Conner is down, Leon is the fucking MAN that can carry the team. They aren't going anywhere until the rest of the team specifically the 3rd and 4th forward lines and more importantly the defense pairs are coached properly. We are seeing guys like Domi and Bertuzzi stepping it up in Toronto, but again, let's look at defending. Same thing. Edmonton and Toronto have all kinds of talent but both are getting eaten alive by depth teams in the playoffs. Florida or Boston will CRUSH Toronto. Edmonton will be smashed to piecesvby Vegas or Vancouver when it matters.

@handsomejustin
@handsomejustin 3 ай бұрын
Gretzky wouldn't even make it to the AHL just on his conditioning alone. If prime Gretzky played in the NHL, he would be skating at half speed of current players and gets obliterated. However, with the contioning and sports medicine, could he keep up and dominate in today's league? He might, but I would say no because that never happened. you're playing with what ifs that don't exist. You also can't guarantee those conditioning and new way of high speed high skill playing wouldn't keep him out of the game from the injuries. So no McDavid is the GOAT and likely doesn't have anyone like him again soon since sports medicine is already at its peak now.

Mcdavid will never achieve what Jagr did because simply put, he’s not as good as Jagr. Jagr played in the dead puck era when defenders could use both hands to hug a player to try to stop them. And Jagr could still shake them free and dominate the game. And for second half of his career, Jagr played with no name centres or ahl centres and he still dominated. If Jagr in his prime played in this era, he would still dominate, if Mcdavid in his prime played in the dead puck era, mcdavid wouldn’t be able to gather speed in the neutral zone because he would have defenders draped all over him, rendering his greatest asset useless
@WhatsHappeningHockey

I think you make an interesting point here, but guys like Pavel Bure who relied entirely on speed were still able to produce in the deadpuck era. It’s not a perfect comparison but the main difference is McDavid processes the game faster than any of those guys did. I don’t disagree that Jagr would have produced in this era, he proved he could be a formidable player well after his prime. I do think though that his skating would have held him back from achieving the same heights he did while in the dead puck era

After reading all these replies, I'd even make the argument that Gretzky's mid and Jagr carried Lemieux. Gretzky tends to score on his own net, and Lemieux's point production is still less than Jagr's on average. The Czech Republic beat Canada with the help of Hasek in net. That's with Gretzky holding Canada back. If it wasn't for Joe Sakic in 2002 Canada would only have 1 gold medal in Olympic hockey. You're all looking at players with a bias, seen through a Canadian lens that shows them as being the greatest of all time.

McDavid is the best player OF ALL TIME. Hockey players have never been better and even 10 years ago, some blue line players wouldn't make it to the NHL today. So McDavid having same stats as Jagr makes him way above him in skills and he could easily obliterate Gretzky and Lemiux. But if Gretzky and Lemiux had the same training could they become as good as McDavid? No. Because it never happened, you can't say for sure they will nor can you guarantee they won't get injured. There's no what ifs, so McDavid is simply the GOAT until the league gets better with another player who's even better which I highly doubt since we already hit the peak of human conditioning in sports.

In 25 years, people will be talking about today's players the same way that you talk about yesterday's players. I only hope that you live long enough to hear it.

NO they won't, because sports medicine has already platued. And most people in North America can't even afford rent let alone paying thousands of dollars letting their kids play hockey. Do you hope that you can live long enough to hear it tho?@@peterolbrisch8970

You can easily just flip that entire argument. If McDavid didn’t have the benefit of learning from decades of sports advancement he would be entering the league at Gretzky’s time with a wooden stick and trash equipment and nowhere near as much knowledge of the game as it hadn’t progressed at that point. We don’t know these things. Great players are built off greatness that came before them. That’s how they learned, that’s how to sport evolved. It happens to every single sport

Yeah except that it didn't happen for McDavid. He's by far the most skilled and fastest skater in the NHL amongest all the modern players with the benefits of sports medicine and training. Gretzky wasn't. If we compare to McDavid to Gretzky, Gretzky would not have even made it today's AHL. There are no what ifs in history. @@Childofbhaal

@@handsomejustin That’s my argument.. put McDavid in the day without all the players to learn from, the advancement of the sport and you have no clue how good he could be. He is a product of decades worth of advancement

@@handsomejustin Yet grandpa Jagr was able to score 66 points at 44 years of age in a season where only one guy had more than 90. And he was never even close to Gretzky and Lemieux.
