Hope acknowledges the present reality, appreciates what God has done, and anticipates God working in similar ways in the future. Psalm 16 is a psalm of hope. David is likely in the midst of a challenging time. However, he is confident God will rescue him from death, because of the ways God has been faithful in the past. This psalm is quoted in reference to Jesus, “You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption” (vs. 10). Though God fulfilled this anticipation in different ways for David and Jesus, he will never abandoned his people to death.

PRIMARY TEXT FOR THIS MESSAGE: (Psalm 16, ESV)
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Main Theme/Big Idea:
True hope isn’t wishful thinking or placing trust in temporary solutions. Biblical hope is rooted in God’s proven character and ultimate promises. This sermon challenges us to evaluate the object of our hope, reminding us that God is the only reliable source of preservation, provision, and eternal joy.
Key Points:
The Object of Our Hope:
Everyone hopes in something, whether it’s technology, government, self-reliance, or other temporary solutions. However, placing hope in anything but God leads to disappointment. Only God provides hope that is trustworthy and eternal.
Biblical Hope Acknowledges Reality:
Hope doesn’t ignore pain or struggles. Instead, it acknowledges the present reality and turns to God for preservation and provision, trusting Him to protect and guide us through life’s challenges.
God’s Proven Character:
Biblical hope is grounded in God’s track record. Through Scripture and personal experience, we see God’s faithfulness, reliability, and loyalty, which inspire confidence in His future promises.
Hope in the Resurrection:
David’s words in Psalm 16 foreshadow Jesus’ resurrection, affirming that God will not abandon His people to death. Because God raised Jesus, we can trust that He will raise us as well, granting eternal life free from decay, pain, and injustice.
Application:
Evaluate where you place your hope and ask yourself if it is rooted in God or in temporary things like wealth, power, or technology.
Practice biblical hope by acknowledging your struggles, remembering God’s faithfulness, and trusting Him to fulfill His promises.
Live in light of the resurrection, letting the certainty of eternal life shape your perspective and priorities today.
Memorable Quote:
"Hope doesn’t always know how or when, but it knows who. God is the only one who will never let us down."
Closing Thought/Call to Action:
True hope is found in the character and promises of God, who raised Jesus from the dead and will one day fix all that is broken. This week, let’s renew our commitment to place our hope in Him alone, trusting in His proven faithfulness. Whether through baptism, recommitment, or leaning on your church family, let’s embrace a hope that sustains and transforms us as we wait for the day of resurrection.
