It’s hard for me to see why people don't find beauty in this jet. I think the whole MD-80/90/95 series was absolutely stunning. The DC-9 technically introduced the regional jet concept. I wish McDonnell-Douglas was still in business to give Boeing a run for its money! Great video as always.

I've always found the whole DC-9/MD-80/MD-90 series to be very attractive birds...perhaps my fave would be a DC-9-40 wearing late 1960s to 1970s SAS livery, but I'm an old guy. :-) Thanks Sam, for the nice words.

Just my opinion, but the last one I appreciated was the MD-80. The 83 onwards had really long fuselages which in my opinion made them less of a reg jet. I love the 717 as well but I'm an oldie so I'm the DC-9- 30/40 lover.

This brings back memories I worked for McDonnell Douglas on the MD 80s and MD 90s as well as MD-11 is the one thing I remember about the MD 90s is they had a software problem with their flight control system where the aircraft would porpoise in-flight another words on commanded pictures in the elevator system I don’t know how many times I had to change elevator actuators on those things and if you noticed that’s a T tail So you had to work off an 80 foot boom lift not exactly the funnest of jobs to do in the wet weather also the fuel filters were difficult to access remember those engines were designed to be mounted under the wings not on the side of the fuselage oh well that was just me putting in my two cents God bless everyone who loves these aircraft as much as I did

You should see the A320 production videos from 1986-7. Big hair, shoulder pads, and synth pop everywhere, and it shows how old the A320 design really is. In fact, a brand new NEO is about 95% identical to one from 30 years ago.

Just went on vacation to Key West, Florida over new years. My first flight from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Atlanta, Georgia was on an MD-90. From what I read online, there are only 16 of them left in service now and all 16 are owned by Delta. The last new one being produced in 2000. This one must have been much older than that though because it still had ashtrays up near the lavatory and inside the lavatory lol. I may have just flown on the oldest remaining MD-90 in service lol.

Sad Fact: The MD95 was develloped in 1995 by Mcdonnell Douglas. In october 1997 MD bankrupted and was bought by Boeing which worked on finishing the MD95 project renamed Boeing 717. The 717 came out on september the 2nd 1998 a day involving another MD aircraft in a crash: the Swissair 111 MD11. :(

wethead86 I know but MD was in a bad condition for being absorbe by boeing. If they merged the new compagny should have been called Mcdonnell Boeing or something. But has always Boeing had the better of it and True MD industry and style ceased to exist after the last MD project was finished by boeing the MD95 aka B717 in 1998. and after the last MD83 where producted in 1999. sad :( such a potential...gone.

One thing I love about McDonnell Douglas was their aircraft introduction. I think since the DC-10-10, they revealed the aircraft to the world from the hangar with the aircraft powered by its own engines instead of having a tug tow it out. I think this shows that McDonnell Douglas was proud and confident that their aircraft was ready to fly on the very first day.

They went out of business because they lacked innovation. After the late 1960's all they produced were derivative versions of aircraft. Boeing pretty much has gone down the same path since they merged with McDonnell Douglas in 1997. Whilst McDonnell Douglas produced good looking aircraft they were to a certain degree inferior to their competitors...

I think the MD-90 is the most attractive of the DC-9 family, mostly due to its longest length and largest engines. Just like an A340-600 is more attractive than A340-300, or DC-8 Super 70 looks better than any earlier DC-8. Long is beautiful! (I doubt anyone ever called an A310, 747SP, 737-200/500/600, or A318/319 "beautiful"...)

I love all of the McDonnell Douglas, Boeing and Lockheed promotional videos that you have posted. I have spent many hours watching your exceptional collection of videos and I hope to see more in the future. One question that I did have for you: Have you ever considered making a playlist of just promotional videos for each manufacturer? I would love to see any and all videos that you have for the L-1011 TriStar. My grandfather was one of tye engineers who designed the TriStar and I have always been fascinated by that aircraft. If you have any more Lockheed videos, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could post them in a dedicated playlist! :-)
@mcdonnell220
@mcdonnell220 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks so much for writing, and the good words! I actually have been playing around with various playlist ideas. I only built the "Airliner Promo Films" playlist about a month ago, and the entries are alphabetical. I will consider your idea, breaking it up into manufacture or airline. just not sure I have enough of 'em to warrant a playlist for each individual manufacture, but I will certainly consider it. I will have a dilemma when/if "More Classic Jetliners" fills up, because obviously, I can't call a playlist, "Even More Classic Jetliners", LOL. I suppose it should be "Classic Jetliners 1", "Classic Jetliners 2", etc, or broken down by aircraft or airline type, but on some vids, there are multiple types and airlines featured. But I'll think on this, for sure. You Tube allows 200 vids per playlist, then you have to start a new one, or "Part 2", as it were.

I've got a family history with the L-1011 also, just an incredible bird, vastly superior to the DC-10, which I loved to fly in also. If only Lockheed could have gone with a small 100-120 seater to compete with the DC-9 and 737 to supplement the sales of the L-1011, providing the steady flow of $$$ needed to keep developing larger transports. In Boeings case it was the 727 that paid the way for the 747 program and later the 737.

A great Airplane that would have gone on selling for many years if MD had not sold out to Boeing , who sadly ended production after a small vertion called the Boeing 717 was made for a short time, I believe the MD 80 & 90 has given long service to Delta and many other Airlines of the World. Planeman 789 Jersey.C.I.

@ErickC 8 жыл бұрын
The 717 is not related to the MD90 in any way except for a common lineage to the original DC-9. The 717 is based off the basic DC-9 (being about the size of a DC-9-41) while the MD90 is based on the later DC-9-80 series (which has an extended wing and horizontal stabilizer). The 717/MD95 borrows the vertical stabilizer and tailcone from the MD87, but that's about it. Boeing did in fact market the 717/MD95 heavily, but it was a decade or so ahead of its market (interestingly enough, the few that were produced are in high demand now).

I think boeing still has the design for the 717. If they wanted to break into the regional market, they could make a 4th generation of this airframe.
@planeflight1202
@planeflight1202 4 жыл бұрын
It would be intresting if boeing raised the landing gear, elonginated the fuselage, and with new engines made an economical 4th generation of the DC-9. They would really have to add some redundencies for that jackscrew though probably.

My first flight ever was in 2004-05 on American Airlines. The pamphlets in the back of the seats said "Super 80". I wonder if I was flying on an MD-80 or an MD-90. Same thing honestly. I hate flying and will never do it again. But I will always have a special place for the Mad Dogg.

If they had come out with this jet in 1988 and added some winglets, we may have had MD jets around today. Though really they should have added the cfm56 to the original md80 as they came about in the mid 70s.

Let's face it, the MD90 is the airplane that they ought to have brought to market in 1979. Instead, while everyone else was switching to high-bypass turbofans, MacDac opted to stick to leaky turbojets.
@ErickC
@ErickC 8 жыл бұрын
Todd Burleson I don't think you understand what the term "leaky turbojet" means. It's pejorative slang for a low-bypass turbofan.
@ErickC
@ErickC 8 жыл бұрын
Todd Burleson And if you want to split hairs, the GTCP85 is most definitely not a turbofan - and every DC-9 has one.
@9HighFlyer9
@9HighFlyer9 7 жыл бұрын
ErickC Not to also split hairs but the GTCP85 is a gas turbine. So Todd Burleson statement that the DC-9 never had turbojets is correct.
@ErickC
@ErickC 7 жыл бұрын
You're right, of course, under the regs it's not a turbojet as it doesn't use the gas flow to provide usable thrust. I'm going to assume that when I wrote that, I was in the middle of a brain fart or a beer (possibly both). Although, it should be added that the turbofan is technically defined by the FAA as a subclass of turbojet, albeit with a bypass duct. Aren't the regulatory agencies fun? ;) All in good fun, of course!

We had touchscreens in the 1980's, see the HP-150 computer for example. People thought it was more intuitive and natural, but turns out holding your hand in front of the screen for long periods sucks and the mouse won.
