Film from the Internet Archive. Some really nice footage of early '47 operations, including brief but RARE footage of an Eastern Air lines bird! Be sure to check my channel for the best in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos!

“We’re going to Kabul next month.” In the 1970s, there was a special promotional airfare from NY to Kabul via Europe that actually undercut the then-very regulated US-Europe fares. It was well known amongst many veteran travelers. Some people just threw away the Europe to Kabul portions of the tickets and used the promotional fare to get to Europe, in each case flying to and from Europe next to travelers paying much more for just the US-Europe fares. One book in particular talked about this fare and encouraged people to be adventurous and make use of the Kabul portion. How things change.

It amazes me that some of these routes that used to have a widebody jet like a DC-10 or L1011 now get a barbie jet like an ERJ or CRJ.

FINALLY, somebody else uses the "Barbie Jet" analogy...and I thought i was the only one. Good on 'ya Arthur.

Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture I love that analogy. I think I'm gonna use it, too. I remember flying in a 737 from Atlanta to San Francisco back in 1998 when I went there to get Rosetta, my third Guide Dog. I thought that was really pushing it. I also felt the altitude quite a bit more than I did in the 747 or even the DC8. In 1976, I flew in a 707 from Paris to New York on July 4th. It was simply fantastic! I had left the states on July 4th, 1974 to go to France where I lived for exactly 2 years. Those were the best 2 years of my life back then, and I miss it even today. I love America, but I've seen this country go from having higher standards to what we have today which I find to be a disaster. There's no sense of right or wrong, and politicians are self-seeking hypocrits who have no humility in serving this country. I became a DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution) back in 1978 after submitting the winning poem in 7th grade entitled "The American Way", and I believe our founding fathers wouldn't be able to recognize this country today. There's absolutely no respect for authority, and so many people are rude and disrespectful to the point that every other word or group of words is profanity and repulsive. It's truly deplorable! Still, I keep trying to set a better example, hoping that people will take notice and try to express themselves more appropriately. It's not easy, but it's certainly better in the long run, because I can still hold my head up high and smile. I do love flying and miss it so much, because I don't get to travel anymore, because I'm living through intense chronic pain everyday, and sometimes the pressure in my ears can make it worse. Oh how I wish I could fly more often! So for now, I'll enjoy this and other channels. Heather

A retired airliner pilot told me the 747 was so easy to land nicely because it created a 'wake' or 'wave' of pressurized air ahead and under it as you floated down on that onto the runway.

What a beautiful video from a wonderful era. For many airlines, the 747 was the only wide body option, before the L-1011 & DC-10 could get delivered. Today’s skies now are full of 777s & Airbuses. :)

It is, isn't it? First flew on a 747 in Summer of 1974. Air Canada -133 from YVR to YYZ. Was just 10 years old, traveling by myself under watchful care of a stewardess, complete with vinyl I.D. plaque hung around my neck. :) Second flight was on a Pan Am -121 from HNL to SEA in Fall of 1977. PAA gave out neat 50 year anniversary memorabilia on that flight. You don't forget times like that. The 747 was so much more special back then.
