In 1979, Arthur McDuffie, a black salesman and former Marine, led police on a high-speed chase. When four white officers detained him, McDuffie died from the injuries he sustained. Six police officers were indicted for manslaughter, as well as tampering with evidence. Once they were acquitted of all charges, riots broke out in Liberty City and Overtown, killing at least 18 people and injuring over 300 others.

I couldn't believe how reporting has changed, everything from those doctors, to the TV reporter. You'll never see that in this day in age.

I remember this well. I was 14 years old, living in Miami Liberty City when this happens. We were out of school for 3 weeks. 40 years ago, and I'm looking at it happening today again.

These young people think, after the Civil Rights Movement, that was it. I grew up in the 70s when white teachers didn't teach black history and we didn't have a Martin Luther King holiday. School was pure Hell! Especially on a black kid. The little boys was treated worst. These white men were nothing but Klansmen. It makes me so upset when, I hear black people not helping one another and harming one another.

In 1981 Dade County settled a civil lawsuit filed by McDuffie's family for $1.1 million. The 1980 Miami riots were the deadliest since the 1960s and remained such until the 1992 Los Angeles riots twelve years later.

There were actually a lot more blacks in Miami back in those days. A lot of black Miamians moved away since then or got pushed out. Liberty City is dead today.

@@curtandoscar No, trust me; as a staunch conservative member of a law enforcement family, I think that was despicable insanity that these officers were acquitted. No “mistaken identity”, no questionable “did he have a gun in a threatening manner”, they literally murdered this man.
