Never had any issues with my NECA one. Had it almost ten years, been posed a lot, no breakages at all. The headsculpt is still superior and the texture and look of the suit is better too. The McFarlane wins on articulation and size.

Count yourself VERY lucky. Something like 90% of NECA Superman snap like twigs if you so much as look at them funny.

You are really lucky, mine break like 5 years ago. Good thing I didn't throw it away and now its head sit on the Muff toys Clark Kent body.

Give the McFarlane version a spray of matte finish. That will help with the shiny texture.

I have the NECA Superman, and the '66 Batman, the latter of which broke by literally BREATHING ON IT. Yeah, I pulled the tray out of the box and the left arm looked a bit suspect, so on a hunch I gave the figure a sharp blow of breath ( something I don't normally do) and the arm separated at the elbow. The Superman figure arrived a couple of days later and I opened that CAREFULLY, put it in ONE pose and have left it that way to this day. I'm looking at getting the McFarlane '78 Superman soon, and it will essentially replace the NECA one for me. But that said, aside from the serious QC issues with the NECA, I like the sculpt, the paint and the size/proportions on it a lot better. It's a real pity it is so fragile.

When I had the NECA '66 Batman, the pegs on the hands snapped off when I tried to pull them off to try the others. That was back when NECA figures were fragile as hell. I'd like to think they're better than before

@@craigjuan5744 ---There was a period of time when NECA made fragile crap---then they got better, really good actually. Then there was a very brief time around when they made the '78 Superman and '66 Batman and those figures seems to go to heck. Really fragile--despite the draw those specific characters brought with them. After them, good stuff/happy days again. McFarlane, doesn't really have bad spells like that, so much as bad samples. One or two figures from a batch will break, but not all. A different kind of inconsistency. The really telling thing about both manufacturers us that the breaks happen almost exclusively at the joint pins---Shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, feet---which means it's the material the pins themselves are made of. Other manufacturers sometimes have similar problems wit the same parts and it begs the question as to why someone doesn't come up with a design rethink??

Totally agree with your points. I was able to do the hot water trick to free up the joints for my NECA one and pose him. 12 years down the line, his hip snapped in the exact place as yours.

Adam West Bat had a knee snap more often than not, so when I got him I immersed him in semi-hot water for 20 minutes and tried to just pose above the waist.

If you look closely the chris Reeve suit did have a pattern. The spandex had those fine lines . It was sown very particular. Infact its a way most cosplayers can distinct a fake Reeve costume vs a screen accurate Reeve suit.

The costume was not made out of spandex. It was a custom made woven, stretchy blue nylon material.

@@justsomeone4543 if it's nit to stretch it means it's made of a blend of Nylon and spandex fibers. It's still considered a spandex leotard. Some may abbreviate it as Nylon / spandex but alot of people just say spandex. Good point though. It doese explain why the material was so unique.

NECA nailed the likeness. McFarlane did not. It would look so much better if the nose wasn't so fat.

I think it can be improved with shading or heating it up and trying to adjust the shape but there's no where for the excess in plastic to go so I would go with some shading.

I own the Neca one and it doesn't scale with 6 inch figures or 7 inch, it's a weird in between size

@@FreshyMandela Agreed. I am fortunate to have both West Bat and Reeve Supes on the same shelf. But I landed a Mattel Lynda Carter Wonder Woman, whose smaller scale fits right in. My BvS team.🙃

Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. Seeing the difference in height between the figures is enough to make me prefer the McFarlane version since all my other figures are 7 inch scale.

I actually like the Neca a lot better than MacFarlane. I hate seeing the abb section..it really is unattractive. And he's too muscular. Christopher Reeves wasn't that buff. What sucks about the Neca is that the torso will separate from the bottom. The MacFarlane has an ok head sculpt,the Neca is better. I do wish the Neca was a lot bigger of a figure. Obviously the articulation very different. But the Neca CAN be put in some cool poses other than just "stand " there. All in all..Neca wins. Yea,the S on the cape is accurate. Good review,man!

When I purchased the NECA 89 Batman the knee joint broke off and repaired it with a screw. I guess back in the day there were some quality issues regarding the posebilities of the joints. Didn't have any problems (so far) with the NECA superman and it's standing tall and proud. Once I got the McFarlane figure, it was definitely much more superior in terms of articulation and design so it was a no brainer that it was a win for me. Both figures have their pros and cons though but hey...nothing is perfect!

Thanks for the video! I don’t have either figure but the NECA likeness is great. Wish Mcfarlane’s didn’t botch the likeness. My NECA Aliens Ripley, has the worst head sculpt and the leg broke in the exact spot your Supes did haha… Would love to see NECA tackle these again now that their articulation issues are better.

@@AsokatheGeek Weird how people have so different opinions about these figures. I've never saw that one in person but I must agree it looked like they missed the mark as well. Hopefully they will try to do the suits on next figures in the way Gong Studio did their recent Shazam and Superman releases, those figures apparently are more articulated and the suits are not baggy.

NECA head sculpt is definitely better but its too small. The McFarlane one is the proper size next to other 7 inch figures. Chris was 6' 4"

Both are great figures! I never owned the NECA Superman figure. I passed on it multiple times. I kept hearing horror stories like yours. When I purchased my NECA Keaton from Toys R' Us the leg broke like yours and I took it back complained and got a new one. I always heat my figures joints before moving too. Knock on wood that the NECA Keaton is still good but I am afraid to pose him. That being said, the head sculpt on the NECA Superman looks really good. I also love that there isn't an ab crunch. It looks so seamless. But like you said, the McFarlane Superman is an action figure first. I too love the bright colors and wired cape. I think the head looks good on the McFarlane but I feel it is squished on the sides a bit. He needs a better jaw. Maybe when mine arrives I will try heating the head up and adjusting the shape of the head to see if I can fix that issue. Great review dude!

I'm looking forward for your custom on the head sculpt, I think you're right. It reminds me of Robert Pattison's head sculpt, that on Batman unmasked looked better than on the drifter figure. Probably some issue when assembling the figure or the mold of the neck.

I have the neca one and love it. it's still intact, but it's essentially a mini statue not to be posed much at all. It has the better face sculpt. But I have to give it to mcfarlane, they did a great job. At certain angles, he is Superman and his build is better. Trying to buy one and getting it shipped to Europe, the prices are insane. So I'm happy to have the neca one

The only thing I think Neca has over McFarlane is the head sculpt. Of course the joints on McFarlane is noticeable, but I am okay with it.

Yup. NECA nailed the face sculpt and body proportions, but this was the time when they used very brittle plastic. I bought 3 of the NECA version and one already snapped at the leg with minimal handling. The figure sadly is very brittle. I'm a little disappointed with the Mcfarlane headaculpt, but at least it doesn't fall apart on you. Plus the wired cape really puts it at another level.

Honestly to me the McFarlane Superman looks more like a younger Terence Stamp the actor that played General Zod…. strange?….🤔

I've seen people saying this head sculpt looks like Bruce Campbell, and now Terence Stamp. I think they just missed the mark with the nose and the head is assymetrical, just like the Robert Pattison drifter figure. Something about the mold or the assembling of the figure. I've seen a lot of videos of people warping and fixing the warping of accessories and head sculpts so I believe this head sculpt can be improved very easily. I believe the Page Punchers Christopher Reeve has a better likeness because it looks like it has a wider jaw and a thinner nose.

Both look great. NECA has the superior head sculpt but McFarlane is more poseable as you said. I've had a number of bad experiences with NECA figures breaking on me within days of buying them so I really don't buy anything from them anymore (although my horror movie figures haven't had any issues but then again, I've never really tried to pose them). NECA makes good sculpts but are too fragile for me.

They probably would do it better, although the McFarlane one from what I've seen would still be the best for the price point. The head sculpt in my opinion can be improved and for customizers, you still have the third head sculpt from the Page Punchers that in my opinion looks more like him if you just look at the facial features. The paint job is an easy fix for some people.

I don't collect anything but the turtles and i have all kinds of brands. However, when it comes to accuracy of looks, noone beats Neca in my opinion. So if you want accuracy, in my opinion you have to go for Neca. If other things are more important to you, there are better choices.

Initially when this one was announced, I was interested. But after seeing it, I'm completely turned off. It's like like looking at dead Chris, somehow kept looking alive with alien embalming fluid. Completely creepy. I like the scale compared to Neca,but nowadays Neca could blow this one out of the water 🌊😂❤

I have a love/hate relationship with the new McFarlane Christopher Reeve Superman figure.. it’s literally perfect from the neck down. That head…. Man that head and hair sculpt just ain’t it.. idk what happened. The Neca head and hair are spot on. I was so looking forward to a Reeve figure with 2024 sculpting technology and i was really let down. The head very faintly resembles Reeve but man.. the likeness and just not there. I prefer the Neca just based on the head sculpt likeness.

I never got the real neca superman but I did get the bootleg. Between the two McFarlane is superior. When it comes to the 89 Batman however, neca definitely trumps McFarlane. The figure looks better, has colour consistency, a frame on the bat-symbol and texture on the cowl. McFarlanes articulation is better though.

McFarlane is close but doesn’t get it right. Necca nails the color of the suit, the rib cage and the look on his face. The McFarlane figure looks all Janky because of all the points of articulation and his face is wrong. Clearly, the necca figure is way better.

The NECA one has a much better facial likeness, but the body look a bit stiff. The diaphram and knee joints on the McF one are ugly, and the face resembles Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos more than it does Christopher Reeve.

That's the first Michael Imperiolli comparison I've seen, but I've seen people comparing it to Bruce Campbell and Terrence Stamp. It seems like people are not looking at the same figure. I would say the head sculpt is an assymetrical fusion of Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh, which some say, looks like Christopher Reeve.

I think Todd would disagree, he's more into statues. 🤣 I agree with you, I like the McFarlane one better, no one is perfect but based on the price, articulation, wired cape, alternate head sculpt. I'm also planning on repaint the Page Punchers one to see if I can use it as a third head sculpt. It's personal preference though.

I can't see it happening because a lot of people prefer it that way. You can hinge the hands and feet in every direction you want. Look what they did for the 40th anniversary He-Man right hand. All DC McFarlane figures have that option of the vertical hinge, and in some of them, it looks quite okay.
