The Mk11 base Spawn figure was incredible and very impressive. The classic Spawn figure came with a throne but was otherwise unimpressive. Will this release be able to appeal to the broader audience or will the game version be uninteresting to purists?

The argument about licensing fees doesn't even hold water anyways. The whole reason to pay for the licence to begin with is to sell more figures, to use the popularity of the license to get more money by selling more. If there was a universe where the retro Spider-Man was released without the licence and some made up superhero called Slinger-Boy would it sell? The fact that they get the amount of sales is partly because of the licence. Now, i don't know if Marvel Legends sell better than G.I. Joe but i heavily assume that they do, so the licensing cost should NOT be transferred to the customer. Even if the argument held water on that front, it would only serve as an explanation, not a defence/excuse for a bad product.

I'm not sure what you're trying to argue here. Are you trying to say that the cost of licensed products isn't higher/passed on to the customer in the vast majority of instances because it sells more, or are you saying that is/should be the case specifically with toys? If it's the former, that's simply not reality. To your question on whether or not something would sell if it had a bootleg name, I'll say yes. Look at the 3rd party transformer market for an example of this. You're likely correct that it sells worse than an officially licensed one, though. I agree with your final point, it is just an explanation. If you don't care about getting a specific character, I can understand that you don't care about license fees and just want quality. However, if you are looking at a specific character, you need to take that into account because it's also going to affect the price of your alternative options to fill that slot. I recognize why Marvel Legends might be more expensive than some of the other lines, but I still stopped buying them at MSRP because it's not worth it imo.

I wonder if McFarlane is giving stands out like candy because back in the day, us Halo fans griped about not getting any for that line. They actually made Covenant Elites with round feet and would take shelf dives all the time. Back when Mcfarlane had a forum we all begged and begged for some type of stands. Now they give them to everything.

At the rate Todd is going...that is probably unlikely to happen. He puts out a wave every 6 months or so...which usually consists of only one or two new characters...sometimes NONE...and then repaints. The line will either die off because of poor sales due to a lack of interest anymore and Todd will lose the license, or the next game will release and he will have to move onto that one to help promote it. As much as I dig what he is doing with MK11, its clear that Mortal Kombat is not his focus.

I really enjoy your reviews but one thing I have noticed that I think would be very important when reviewing a figure is having a figure to contrast to, that is relevant. Like show another spawn which has issues and compare what this figure did better than the other one and how that one could be improved in the future. I know it takes a lot of effort to dig out the figure that you're looking for but I think it would be great if you did so.

They missed the opportunity to represent altenative gear with this figure. There are many sets of cape, gauntlet and stupid boot gear which are supposed to be used with the Commando skin, but instead they re used regular Spawn's cape,gauntlet and stupid boot

Are the giant shoulders abnormal to the character design? I had the original commando spawn from the 90s, he had massive shoulders too, granted they did have armor pieces on them. I just assumed that was the design of the character. I know this is based on MK and not McFarlane's work, but it seems like the character has featured both giant and normal shoulders.

I'm guessing the designs are owned by WB? It's all about balance. Functional articulation, decent amount of paint apps and a few accessories(hands, alternative headsculpt) That "gun" is the sticky grenade launcher from the Batman 12 inch mcfarlane statue.

Yeah, the final product's the only thing that matters to me. Behind the scenes reasons are irrelevant since products don't exist in a void - if it's priced, then the value must be held to standards of the price point. Aside from very special cases, excuses like licensing costs usually just reek of sycophancy.

These figures are perfect for modifying. The plastic is soft enough to cut into easily, and said cuts can usually be hidden behind deep-set sockets or overlapping pieces, so you don't have to worry about being clean most times. They're also relatively cheap, so the pressure is low. I'm not an experienced customizer by any means, and I still think improving the range of motion on McFarlane's figues is startlingly easy.

I only care about if the figure is good for what I'm paying. Have to add, I appreciate the daily uploads and the brutal honesty. There's times it's a review I'd personally disagree with, but it's still worth watching because you give your reasons for why you don't like a certain figure and they're worth mentioning.

For some reason my commando spawn's red parts including his cape has turned to pinkish burgundy instead of his usual red. I had him and displayed at my office desk since october last year. I got it from target so i dont think it was a knockoff. Is there any way I could change the color back?

I wonder if Todd pays himself royalties to make this figures. Spawn is the only MK11 guest character getting any representation. Hope he eventually gets a Spawn movie or a TV show made so his tiny company doesn't have to rely on Kickstarter to release more figures. I care about the final product beyond any technicalities. But would rather pay a few more dollars for figures with accessories and better paint jobs. It is baffling how many figures from similar lines don't seem to justify their prices.

I really want to get this figure, the Commando Spawn design is a one of my favorites. And to answer the question: I don’t think about how much the company spent on the figure/ whatever toy. If I like the toy is what I think about, I just want to enjoy what I bought and not think overly critical and just focus on why I like this hobby.

I decide whether to buy a figure based on whether I’m willing to pay the price the company is asking for. Licensing might help explain that price, but it doesn’t make me willing to pay more. My subjective sense of the value of a figure takes into account how the figure looks, how well it articulates, and how much I want the character in my collection. There are other factors as well, but expense taken on by the company in the process of producing the figure isn’t one of them.

Whatever is worth the price without compromise. Being a comic book brand collector, Hasbro has recently tested this rule with their recent price hikes and lack of quality control. This compromise makes it very difficult to accept. Seeing this product and comparing it to something comparable from Hasbro (Deluxe Ulik) and from DST MS (Planet Hulk) and it becomes apparent which company is compromising my $$$. If it is worth it, and I need it, I get it.

In comic yes, but Spawn use his cape as a moves in MK11, so they had to give them a cape as part of his skins. Which this figure depicts accurately.

I don't care the back end cost. These companies are large enough that the cost for licensing shouldn't affect things like posability because they should have a breadth of knowledge to draw from when making these figures that the engineering should be baked into the skill of the people designing it.

I while the red COVID face mask on spawn looks decent, Im changing the mask on top of the mask with the original MK11 spawn. Also, I prefer getting what i paid for, so make a figure that looks good first and then figure out all the licensing mess later

These toy companies are only concerned about crapping out figures with the least expensive cost (to them) and the highest retail price (to the customer). Considering that the big box retail stores are the direct customer of the toy manufacturers, unless Target and Walmart stop ordering, the manufacturers will continue to create garbage, and the burden is on the retailers to get rid of it however they can 💁‍♂️

"highest retail price" this part is technically incorrect. If they could make 100$ more overall in a single year from dropping the price of each ML to 8$ they would do it. They have, or think they have figured out the price that will get them the most money. As such the correct statement would be something like this: they are only concerned about crapping out figures with the least expensive cost (to them) and the highest retail price (to the customer) as long as the number of customers is high enough.

I called it. I also gave it an 8/10. I have more of a problem with the diaper than with the ankle articulation. The diaper looks too blocky and lacks detail. It doesn't have any creases or zippers or stitching. It's missing something. Also it's less glossy than the plastic used for the legs which makes it look weird. Still a good looking figure.

To answer your question, it's a yes and no for me. (No) I don't really care about the costs if I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, but (yes) I do care when I feel like I'm getting ripped off. Ultimately, I don't need the specifics of what goes into costs behind the scenes for the companies. I don't really care about that. However, I'm confident that I watch enough interviews and am aware enough with the action figure market that I know when they are ripping us off. Sometimes it's as simple as comparing the quality or cost of one figure to other figures they have done, or comparing it to what other lines are doing, but sometimes it's so obvious that you don't have to dig too deep. And usually, when I'm aware of that going on with a figure then I simply don't buy it. What else can I do? I'm aware of it, I'll complain about it on the internet, but that's about all you can do. So even knowing about it doesn't really help anything. So really it just comes down to this: I buy a figure if either A) the value reflects the price tag or B) is of a character that I really want, or I just don't buy it. So I guess knowing what's going on wouldn't really help all that much anyhow.

I only care is if my money is worth the price since a lot of figures skip out on accessories even some import figures which I'm looking at you SH Figuarts. Also the Spawn figure is cool just hate again no extra hands and I agree on this stupid no gun policy. As well the dipper needed to be lower. Lastly, Anthony not sure if you seen the 3d model of this figure but the straps and bullets don't match the in game model so it's missing that level of detail along with the armor since it had a carbon fiber look in the recesses of the armor

Back in the 90s there was an incredibly cheesy gremlins type movie with action figures in it called small soldiers l. The movie had a toyline and while they were accurate and good sculpts were stiff and had little articulation I wonder what company could tackle this franchise and make full scale movie accurate commandos and gorgonites, neca possibly but McFarlane would be great for it imo

I just want a good figure. I am not sure about the money exchange though. Did WB Entertainment have to pay for Spawn to be in the game, and the Todd Father used that money to make the figures cheaper? Seems weird, Todd wouldn't charge himself more for his own creations. Unless, there is maybe a left over Image Comics deal about Spawn figures? I don't know. This is just me thinking and typing (out-loud.)

I care about what I get for my money. When companies are making record bank but are stingy with accessories and paint that bugs me. One of the big reasons I'm collecting less legends. Especially when comparing to neca figures which are slightly more cost wise but you get so much more bang for your buck.

I'm not sure I "care" in a normal sense, but I do find it somewhat interesting. At the end of the day, it's the company's job to balance all of that. They'll have expensive properties and cheap properties. Balance it out and make it worth my money. That's a team of people's jobs at these companies. That's their worry.

The gun thing is seriously ridiculous. Even Hasbro tried to cater to the cream puff feelings on the gun thing with the first few G.I.Joe figures. Until they realized pretty much no kids are getting them since A. Can't be found in most stores, and B. It's mostly adults buying them anyway. Also they're not licensed so they don't have to submit to any rules except the ones they make for themselves. Still, first Snake Eyes has MIB looking guns, the rest were all Fortnite looking weapons. Only to be thrown out the window, and now we're getting more semi accurate weapons. They also did the same thing with movie Deadpool. He has nice, realistic looking guns that are permanently glued in the holsters, but then came with MIB looking guns for him to hold. McFarlane is not perfect by aby means, but at least they're giving us a munitions pack to level it out a bit, and I do find the gun gesture hands a little funny.
