Looking back on this interview and others like it from 12 years ago, when they were promoting their book - there was clear tension between the band members, especially Danny and Harry! Danny was way too quiet! Perhaps writing the book had dredged up a lot of unhappy and uncomfortable things from the past and wasn't always a cathatic experience. Either way, Dougie's personal problems aside, the best thing this band did, was take a much-needed break from one another. The break and group therapy saved not only the band but also their friendship. Dougie was the key to making this happen. As well as Tom! When either Dougie or his counsellor wrote to Tom, asking him to participate in the therapy session with Dougie during his time in rehab. And then Tom later suggested the whole band have group therapy. The difference between this interview and when they reunited in 2019 - it's like they were completely different people! I think the break and the group therapy, made them appreciate eachother more and strengthened their friendship and brotherhood!

Clearly what I mean there, is that they're a band. Being in a boyband usually means singing without instruments and getting other people to write songs for them. Whereas McFly sing, play their own instruments, write their own songs and produce their own songs.

They've had over 35 months in the industry... I know, its quite a while. But if you're going to compare them to McFly, then experience is the only thing in it. I'm a massive fan of both but I personally can tell from McFly's writing abilities and musical style that they have really developed over time, and I hope that One Direction will continue to do so too!

I agree it doesn't make mcfly better, it all depends on your taste in music. I listen to both bands. I am saying you cannot compare them. They're styles are different but they are both good. I'm glad Tom doesn't hold back on his skills just because it's not their usual style, but rather puts them to use somewhere else. I also agree with you that mcfly has more experience. I figure if they can sing without autotune they all deserve some level of respect.

YOU CANNOT COMPARE THEM. McFly have been in the industry for 10 YEARS, are are therefore more experienced - you can hear the maturity in their music. One Direction have been judged by their very first songs, their looks, their personalities, religions etc in their first 3 YEARS in the industry. Who says they won't progress to become as amazing musicians as McFly? This is only the start for them, so give them a chance!

actually, Mcfly wrote all their songs, but they wrote a few with other bands, who they happened to know ..they were never given songs to record. And from the start they auditioned for a drummer, bassist etc...1D are good, but they don't play their own stuff...niall playing guitar is not the same as the level McFLY play instruments on.

To be fair, he can play guitar, but he doesn't very often. Where as McFly play instruments all the time. One Direction aren't just as good as McFly, they're in two completely different genres of music, they cannot be compared. One group are completely self-sufficient, whereas the other rely on their record to get their songs written and composed.

A boyband rarely writes their own songs or plays instruments. Most of them do choreographed dances. Think Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Big Time Rush, One Direction etc. Some of their "live" performances are lip synced. That sort of thing.
