If you have never fished a Chocklett's Game Changer, you have no idea what you are missing out on! This is by far the best bait fish fly out there. I have been fishing this for several years now in the Ft. Myers, FL area, and I now live in Jupiter full time. This is basically all I use now, Snook absolutely destroy this fly. Everything destroys this fly! One thing that I like to do is tie my lead wire down one side of the hook shank from just behind the eye to the bend. This causes the fly to lay more on its side, and when you strip the fly in it looks like a wounded bait fish flopping around...If you are in a situation where a bait ball is being attacked by fish and birds, this fly is irresistible! Love the videos McFly, you have definitely helped me become a much better fly tier!

Great video hands down...I was throwing all sorts of flies for Smallmouth and Largemouth last week...nothing was working...I remembered I bought a couple of these flies and I laughed as I was tying it on while saying "...it takes big balls to call this a game changer fly, but we'll see" I threw the fly and it hit the water and started to sink, I paused, then made the smallest of twitches.... I have never seen a fly get hit as hard and fast as what I witnessed. Incredible and bordering on almost ridiculous. Now we see why these flies are premium priced to buy.
@McFlyAngler2 жыл бұрын
They are great flies. And the premium price is not just because they are effective, but because they take forever to tie. I charge $18.99 each for this size, but its because they take me about an hour to tie. With the cost of materials and my time, its like making minimum wage or less. Many places charge $20-40 for these. Like bass pro shop I think I heard wanted $34.99. Whew! They aren't too bad to tie though, just take time. So if you have the time and want to give it a try, I would suggest to. Have fun.

Absolutely very interesting Fly. Love it. Why not use uv glue for everything and eliminate drying time?
@McFlyAngler3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In regards to if resin can super glue, super glue is a little tougher. In small amounts and where areas can flex, like right near the wire, resin can break or flake off. Super glue removes that possibility, and makes it more secure. But for areas like the head or whip finishes, where there is no flex, resin works perfectly.

At one point you wonder when it’s just lure fishing that calls itself fly fishing xD. Though i will say, these flies look better (cosmetically) than any lure I’ve ever seen, its something about flies that looks so cool
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
I agree with you on that lure thing. However for years we have had streamers for fish like bass, pike and saltwater fishing. Many of those could be called lures also. Really the only “fly” fishing is going to be for trout and a few other freshwater fish. We departed from fishing only “flies” a long time ago. However some of the same concepts are at play with these streamers. Weight is the main thing. All “fly” streamers are lightweight and can only be casted with a fly rod. As opposed to conventional fishing where you cast the weight of the lure, fly fishing casts the line. I do find the presentation of a fly, even the large streamers is much better though than conventional lures. They suspend in the water better, look more natural to the fish, and for me I can catch fish easier in most situations on a fly than a lure because of this.
@Hmm.223 Жыл бұрын
@@McFlyAngler as a non fly-fisher myself im largely of the opinion that its a fly if you can’t use it on a spinning/baitcaster reel. After all, isnt that the whole allure of fly fishing? To be able to use insanely light flies? I might be wrong since i dont actually fly fish myself just curious.
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
There are ways to use a fly on a spinning reel yes. You need to add something heavy though as it is too light to cast. Some people use like bubble bobbers to cast with a fly on the back end. As for weight, no the point of fly fishing isn’t to use the lightest fly, however the lighter the fly actually the easier it is to cast so, generally yes lighter flies work easier. Now when it comes to dry fly fishing then of course it needs to be super light so it doesn’t sink. If fished both ways, I prefer fly fishing a bit more but not against conventional either. I used to actually work on sport fishing boats taking people out fishing for tuna and stuff in the ocean. Still love that kinda fishing also. But there just is something special about catching fish on the fly rod, you feel the fish more, it’s more enjoyable to me, but all ways are still really fun.

I finally tried to tie this fly. Your video made it easy! Huge thank you! One thing I did differently that helped me trim was to put the hook in the vise and pull it straight while trimming. Rotating in 90 to 180 degree increments between cuts. Now I'm wondering if a little dog groomers electric trimmer (small one that they use for around eyes, etc) would work?
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
Awesome I’m glad you gave it a try! So you can try that, but I’d think the dog trimmers could make it more likely to cut too much in one go, but if your good with them than maybe try it. I just know I’d probably cut too deep on the cuts with one of those.

Why not use the U/V Resin on the thread and lead on the hook instead of the super glue?
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
You totally could. I find that UV resin makes the area slick so, when using it there it makes it harder to wrap on the next steps. Superglue doesn’t slick up the area. Now for the whip finishes, I really like using UV resin. It leaves a nice slick looking finish which I think gives a nicer looking effect and it also adds a layer above the threads to really keep those whip finishes protected. Hope that helps explain my reasoning. But give the resin a try on the other parts as well if you want. Just don’t use it on the wire because that area flexes. UV resin is strong but can crack over anything that flexes.

Looks great, good job. I take nothing away from you, this is really nice. Fishing is a very personal sport and each person can, and should, do it how they like to. Honestly, I dont get it though. I've tied these styles of fly and they dont perform any better than a jig lure. I fish for trout on my fly rod, I fish for perch on my spinning rod, and I bait fish for carp, roach, rudd etc. Just seems like forcing a square peg through a round hole to me. If you really want to use a fly rod, you can always strap a rubber jig on an heavy hook and have at it. Theres no shame in it. I just hope that fisher-people out there dont feel that they need to buy or tie these flies to have fun. All this gear can be costly and really time consuming. From a technical perspective, I'd recommend waxing your thread. Not only will it help protect your thread from snags and breaking, it will really help to secure the wires while tying and while the glue sets. It will also help prevent the thread slipping. I'd also recommend using a hair dryer instead of water to shape the fly. The heat from the hair dryer helps to set the feathers and chenille and you dont have to wait for it to dry to move on to the next stage. Just make sure your desk is clean 1st otherwise you'll end up with offcuts everywhere! Great work and I really do enjoy your fishing and fly tying videos 👍
@McFlyAngler3 жыл бұрын
Well some people would rather fish with a fly rod than a conventional rod. The reason why you can’t just cast a regular swimbait on a fly rod is the weight of the lure. On a fly rod, you cast the line, and conventional you cast the lure. These are made to be light and able to cast with a fly rod. Anyway, to each his own, I’m not against conventional fishing, as I do it also. But it is much more enjoyable to catch a fish with a fly rod rather than a conventional. So, anyway, have a great day!

@McFlyAngler3 жыл бұрын
Because it can flake off when it flexes and super glue won’t. The area with the wire can flex, and therefor I fear it will come loose. The super glue is more durable in that section. The rest though, where the area doesn’t flex, UV resin works great.

It’s my fault but…you should put the tail shank in the materials list for dummies like me who watch the video one day and then use the material list the next day to order materials lol.

It seems that every Fly I see Tied is made with exotic materials I don't Have .... :-(

Haha! I feel ya. I have probably $10k worth of materials, this hobby costs a lot for sure! But check out Dooleys fly fishing and risen fly fishing, they are my sponsors for a reason, best prices on quality materials and gear. Hope it helps save ya a buck or two.
