They don't die off, they move in towards the dam. Everyone says they die off but the Guad actually has reproducing trout in it. The water is a lot colder than atmospheric temp, and out of the tall canyon dam it is much colder than that, hence why there's trout on this river and nowhere else.
@McFlyAngler

Thanks for the info. Yeah many dont, some do that cant get into colder water. But I agree now that I live here and have for a while, I think I agree that they generally dont all die off. Ive caught a few actually in the heat of summer.

Hey McFly, I’m so glad you did that video on the Guadalupe River. That was my old stomping ground. You should try up near Gruene, TX which is north of San Antonio. I think that’s more of what you’re looking for. I’m now living in Colorado and fly fishing the heck out of the rivers and streams here. Great video.

@@McFlyAngler well central texas is great for fishing and close to the coast. I moved up here mid summer and honestly it seems slow still. The guys at duranglers said the animas lost some fish recently to wildfires
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 жыл бұрын
It is slow at times on the animas. Try a few smaller creeks with a 2-3wt fly rod. It’s fun casting to little brookies and having them come up for the dry fly. Small fish yes, but so fun. Check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/opmromesfNF1rNE I went to a small creek and fished, it’s not far from Durango. I’ve got quite a few videos of different small creeks in the area and I’ll say that it’s such a blast fishing them! Also just south of you is the San Juan river, which is amazing fishing and you should be able to catch there.

Just a heads up on the trout in the Guad. They for sure are surviving year to year and they’re lunkers. The holdovers are savvy but they are there, in deeper cooler limestone cuts.

Thanks for the info. Yes they are. I ended up moving to San Antonio a year after making this video and have fished it a few times since. I have caught a few trout, one even in summer. Gotta be careful though as the hotter weather stresses them. Anyway, yeah I heard somewhere that they took a strain of rainbow that are more heartier for warmer weather.

McFly Angler not there; but there is a place a bit further up in Comfort I have had amazing luck with! Boerne is a great place with some great people but that river has too much foot traffic for the bass and the good spots can't be reached due to private property. McFly Angler totally understand trying to pass off the rod at the airlines. We recently took a trip to Hawaii, and I was super worried my 8wt was going to get flagged due to size! Turned out great- no one cared, and I had an awesome time throwing to bones in Oahu! 6wt is the best for most Texas fishing, depending on where you go. 8wt will always be my all around favorite because I can throw to reds in the morning and bass in the afternoon!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 жыл бұрын
Well the airline I took said specifically no fly rods, any fishing equipment automatically got a $75 surcharge. In fact they auto charged me on the way back because they made me open up the bag and said that the bag contained a fishing rod, and that had to go separate. Luckily I got charged the $75 only one way though and not two ways.

My friend has been still catching big Stockerr trout off highway 306 near canyon lake. They recently released Brown this year so that’s also a slight opportunity. Try the bridge between riverside path and pecan st. (Google shanty tubes) Or the bridge just down the street near whitewater amphitheater (both these places are off highway 306) Those have deeper holes and have held trout all year
@McFlyAngler

Thanks for the tips. Yeah I know there are still trout to be had, however at these temps, the fly shop said they are weak and might die if hooked. So I decided not to fish for them since I wasn’t keeping fish. I can imagine the water is cooler up by the dam also. It had to be about 80-90 degrees when I waded in down that way. Super hot water! Lol
@fishninjatv7680

yea the water by the dam is "cooler" lol but yes the trout this time of year are super stressed not only due to the temps, but water traffic. The river is a sh*t show of people on the weekends. Good luck out there! If you ever come back down here i can take you to some kayak spots where you can sight redfish in aransas pass. I don't fly fish personally but i enjoy the art behind tying flies.

Oh awesome! Hey I can get you a discount with risen fly. Which is the rods I’ve been using lately. Great quality for a good price. Better priced than redington and better quality also. Go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for an additional discount. Very good priced gear. Check out the ITB rod, it’s awesome! Also they have pretty good quality fly line there as well, and their armor reel is good quality for the money. Personally I love their gideon reel, and totally worth the cost, but it is a bit more than I’d recommend spending for a 1st setup. Let me know if you have any questions on any gear whether it’s risen gear or not. I’d be happy to help.

I started fly fishing when I lived in San Marcos, TX. It is further north. The San Marcos river begins there at the university and has quite a bit of access through the whole town. Since it begins there, it is about the same cool temperature year round. Like swimming in winter. Great hand sized panfish, hybrid bass, and largemouth. I used beadchain flies and dries there. They are a blast right around 5-8 pm or in the morning. Lots of people float the river there though, so sometimes you have to cast around them. Love fishing there!!

Hi, I always enjoy your down-to-earth videos! I'm a 1-year rookie to fly fishing and will probably start tying my own soon out of pocketbook self-defense, since I don't yet have waders to get me away from the backcast-eating brush monsters. :) I live across CO from you, up in Fort Collins. There are a few ponds I know up here where the bluegills can go over 10oz; fantastic fun on a 3wt and wet or dry (or both) flies. The big ones generally can't resist a shiny bead head nymph and usually beat the dinks to it. A small popper-and-dropper can even yield double hookups!

I've had similar issues as McFly before. Called ahead a dozen times to ensure everything was ok, requested details about what was acceptable, details about what I had and how long it was, etc. Then I get to the check-in and they guy says my luggage is "protruding". No amount of clarification and specifics about regulations or who I've talked to would convince him. It really all comes down to who you get at the counter.

Yep, those were Guadelupe bass, which a three pounder would be a exceptional size. They aren't limited to just Guadelupe River, they are all over the place and pretty darn good eaters. During highwater years as well as low water years, the colder waters are beneath dams. The coldest I've fished in Texas, is just past the spillway of Mansfield Dam west of Austin, I can imagine, it might even be colder under the Canyon Lake spillway. Pity they don't stock trout below the Mansfield Dam, but they do under the Canyon, it might explain some of those bigger trout that are being caught on some the videos I've seen play on KZbin. The trout might be able to survive for years, in the Guadalupe, either that or they stock big ones. Pray for rain, in Texas we need it bad, we are going on four years of drought, it really sucks. I caught a some golden yellow bass in the currents, behind rocks in the Blanco River, near Wimberley about thirty years ago, that were a lot of fun. I wonder if they still can be found.

Awesome man! I live here and fish here all the time! You massacred the spelling of the Guadalupe river. The Guadalupe bass can actually be caught all around the guad, medina? And rivers around San Antonio. Pink pookies are killer here. Big streamers that imitate trout can get big bites from massive 20 lb+ stripers in the winter since they eat trout. And sucker eggs and small streamer can catch trout in the wintry. It’s so cool to see you fish where I fish. It’s a great river in Texas. Especially for trout in the winter. The medina river is probably the best Fly fishing in Texas for bass and panfish, they stock trout in there I’ve just never fished for them there. And in the blanco river they stock trout that will eat anything.

I know where that first spot is at, but it's got a bunch of no parking signs all along the highway :/
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe now, if didn’t then. There is no parking at most spots really close to the bridges, but usually the signs have an arrow stating not to park from the sign to the bridge type thing. You should be able to find parking at most of the bridges. Sometimes it’s a bit of a walk though

Nice video, I was wondering what location were you fishing at when your video is at 11:03 it looks nice. Was there a fee to access this location? I was Guadalupe State Park last week fishing with my wife, caught a few Blue gills before the crowd showed up and made way too much noise and racket. But if you could provide the location you were at would be appreciated.

Like I said in the video, I have no clue how to get back there sorry! I do know there is a marina close by. And yes it cost money to park, but no need to pay unless there is someone at the pay station.

Oh, so this camera comes with a hat clip, just basically clips onto your hat. No need for installation. Or you could buy a hat clip, I think I’ve found them for $5 and under on amazon. Make sure it fits the go pro connectors if you have them.

There are several different strains of bass in the guadalupe, they have been flooding the river with more guad bass hoping to drown out the small bass. I fished the medina and caught a 2 nice guadalupe bass and several small ones.

Your comment that a 3wt rod is meant for "small fish" is terribly inaccurate. I've caught numerous 20+ inch trout on my 3wt rod and it handles them just fine. A 3wt weight rod is primarily meant for throwing small flies...the size of the fish doesn't matter.
@McFlyAngler
