I think this is the greatest turnaround i've ever watched on a tennis court. From 5/7 0/2, all of a sudden, there is a hurricane swirling around Martina. Winning shots are coming from everywhere. The speed of her footwork, the pace and accuracy of her shots, this is truly exceptional. Steffi became a champion of her own that peculiar day !

this is the match that made me get interested in tennis and started following Steffi. She made the game look so easy and she did it elegantly too! I also started picking up a tennis racket after this (no coaching, just tried to follow her forehand based on the VHS tape), and of course, to this day my forehand became my weakness because i just don't have the perfect timing like she does... Lol. Her forehand only works for her as she has the perfect timing!

At 53:30, this was the turning point in the match. Graf had already broken Martina the previous game, but Steffi needed that spark to get herself going. Running back to the baseline then running up again to hit that winner. That's all Graf needed to get herself going. She never stopped after that point giving up only one more game.

What a great match to see once again. I recall at the time I had been taken by surprise that it had gone to 3 sets; I'd watched the semis and thought Martina had lost a step from the previous year and wouldn't challenge Steffi. That she grabbed the opening set was quite the achievement, but it was just one of those matches where Steffi got better and better and Martina's level definitely dipped. I don't think anyone could have stayed with Steffi that day. It was one of those seminal moments in sports where a true changing of the guard was heralded; Martina was spent, would never prove quite so good again (still an unbelieveable force!), and Steffi led a younger cohort of athletes who would only get better themselves. Talented tennis from a more civilised era in the women's game. Thank you for posting this :-)
