Love Mom Delights! that's where I learned about the McGuffy's. I mentioned them to my parents once, and come to find out, they had the whole set of the originals and passed them on to me to use with my kids! I use the lesson book as well. And just like you mentioned, I'll go to other books/curriculum, but keep coming back to McGuffy's too. I just need to drop the curriculum altogether.

We have been using The Lesson Book for nearly 3 years and love it with the McGuffeys. We have Harvey’s Grammar and have referenced it. My 7th grader wanted something a little different so we went with Easy Grammar plus. It’s been a great combination! She does 1 page/part of her McGuffey lesson and 1 page from Easy Grammar, not overwhelming at all, but solid.

@@RevivalAcres yes, I did respond. 😊 it was a long answer. Lol condensed version: we’ll start CP next year in 3rd grade for my son. He wasn’t quite ready this year. I’d say if a child is reading the McGuffey first reader (first half of book) fluently, they could start CP. Each book is seasonal though so I decided to wait to start them next fall. Hope that helps. 💜

For my son, we use both the revised and original, and use tredwell and free, and elson readers too, otherwise he flies through them too quickly (we just use one after the other). He reads them aloud to me every day, 1 lesson per day. He reads other books as his silent reading (independent) some of those are classic literature, some more modern. He is in grade 4 and is on level 3 in the original, and level 4 in the revised, the other books are more grade leveled. He has 2 more brothers coming up behind him who are about to start this journey, so I will look into some of these resources, thankyou.
@RevivalAcres2 жыл бұрын
We use all of those as well. McGuffey is our go-to for dictation because of the rich writing and complex words. We do one-two lessons a week, depending on student and word difficulty.
@klecianetz21132 жыл бұрын
@@RevivalAcres I will say that when my son was assessed for reading and comprehension, and spelling he scored way above his grade level, he scored 2.5 grades above for both and I put it down to primarily these books and copywork from these books, scripture, and draw write now books. We didn't do dictation as such, but did answer the questions they have in the original. My son is not a bookworm either (he still rarely reads for pleasure 🥲).

We love "mom delights" work pages I create spelling and writing books for each kid with exactly the pages I want for each kid and I mix it up a bit. My daughter loves gentle grammar soooo much she does it daily even when not asked to, she's finishing those up, but since she loved them so much I decide to go find other gentle plain English curriculum for her and decided on climbing to good english. I started with mcguffey's but we have to pause on occasion with my youngest who is just learning phonics so when we get to a place we can't move on from I find other readers to add. I'm getting pathway readers next year. I was torn between pathway and rod and staff readers I really wanted both but we are doing a different bible curriculum plus our daily bible group time so I felt adding both readers would be too much. But I still might introduce the R&S readers, one reason I chose not to aside from our workload is I have a 6 & 11 year old and I want to start them both in genesis next year and have bible curriculum and our group study both go through genesis together and most bible curriculum or readers has you advanced to a different portion of the bible by 5-6th grade and I found that CLE bible curriculum for grade 5 starts over at genesis again so I'm pairing CLE bible curriculum 1 & 2 together since both start in genesis. The pathway readers do biblical character stories where the R&S is more bible stories from what I understand. But this way the readers won't have us in a different place than our biblical studies. I'm adding in laying down the rails, our 24 ways too. Pathway and rod and staff are both mennonite/amish publishers so they are plain and we love the plain, wholesome education and all our reading are old books and mostly direct sources. You should check out Robinson Curriculum you would absolutely love it, all books, k-12 digital and you print or go on the hunt online or at thrift stores but all books are provided for one price digitally and allows you to print or do e-reader. The books in the curriculum you will love and it's a lifetime purchase too. We add Charlotte mason and poetry but stick to the curriculum and do just 3Rs and all our subjects are from books and direct sources like reading the actual diaries of the president's themselves. The Robinson Curriculum is all books and a booklist for k-12 but you add to it if you want most do to add their favorites and pleasure books and interests, my daughter spent a month on rocks, minerals and metals just because that's what interested her, we do just a book at a time do gives us soooo much room to explore different topics and can take our time and add other resources if the children's interest is peaked. I do a monthly themed library haul just for them to have different interest books around and use those for inspiration for writing topics or projects and I fill half my read aloud basket with fun library books while also currently reading through the little house on the prairie series of books

I bought the original and revised mcGuffey readers because of Sherry Hayes :) she is such a great resource! I'm having such a hard time letting go of the concept of modern homeschool workbooks, though...it's also my first year homeschooling. Any thoughts of using these vintage books over the modern workbooks? We are using Master Books this year and have next year's books. I love their integration of Bible in all their subjects.
@RevivalAcres3 жыл бұрын
Are you liking MB or looking to switch to more vintage? Or combine? I’ve used MB and they truly are the best open and go Christian on the market IMO. But, they’re workbooks and leave little room for CM method. Have you thought of notebooking and using living books exclusively? I HIGHLY recommend A Gentle Feast along with Mcguffey readers agentlefeast.com/?ref=Arielletuttle
@nbobrick173 жыл бұрын
@@RevivalAcres I like MB, but I'm finding that I kind of want something that's more straight to the point in certain subjects, such as language arts and math. For example, their phonics book has amazing biblical content, but my daughter would not be able to sit through that, so, instead I started using Easy Peasy Learn to Read. That's how I heard about the McGuffey Readers, since they use the revised primer and first reader in that program. As I did more research, I found Mom Delights which totally opened up a whole new world for me in regards to vintage book education. I'm thinking to use vintage books for LA and math, and then MB for science, history, and other apologetic-type courses. I've looked into a gentle feast, but being that I'm a new homeschooler, I'm a little afraid to go full CM until I feel a little more confident 😅 When using the McGuffeys, how do you know when to mention something during the reading? (Ie capitalization, word families, prefixes, suffixes, etc.) In one of the Mom Delights videos, she mentions doing that during the reading day. Wondering if it just happens naturally as we read and my child asks questions, or of we see an obvious pattern in the word lists.

Do you think the original or revised is better for primer and 1st reader like mom delights? I ordered the revised but trying to decide if I also will order the original for the primer/1st reader
@nbobrick173 жыл бұрын
@@markholder4944 I have personally liked the progression of the revised. I taught my daughter how to read primarily through the revised primer and first reader. The words build on to each other. If you look into Easy Peasy homeschool, she created a reading program where the first two sections are the revised mcGuffeys. I hear that the originals are more advanced and evangelical so I will switch to the originals (basically the opposite of Sherry Hayes lol) once my kids are good independent readers.

I would recommend dictation for writing/composition where they select a paragraph from their favorite book they’re reading each day, then at the end of the week you would read one of those chosen, practiced paragraphs aloud for them to write unseen. It’s like a contextual spelling test. For Grammar I’d recommend www.amazon.com/dp/1944435042/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_GY6C7E56J5H5VEBGT0VC?linkCode=ml2&tag=revivalacresh-20 And/or www.adelectableeducation.com/downloads/grammar-lessons/ We did 4th grade Term 1-2 from ADE then Term 3 and Term 1 5th grade Grammarland and then finishing off ADE. Hello! Do you think all of what you showed in this video is good for kids that are struggling to read? Or is this an advanced curriculum/resources? Also, I want wholesome stories. Do these stories mention God? We are Christians and would prefer something that aligns with our faith. Also, do you happen to have other videos on what you explained here? I don’t have Instagram, so hoping you have other videos on KZbin about the McGuffeys and all. 😊 Thanks in advance.
@RevivalAcres2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I think the McGuffeys are fantastic for any reader as they progress slowly and phonetically builds. Always begin right before it’s a challenge for your child in order to build confidence and firm up an holes. So even if your child is 8-9 yrs old, you could always begin halfway through the primer or where is best, moving as the child needs. These are very biblical and mentioned God often! That’s why I use them because nothing modern can compare. The originals even more so than the revised. I’m hoping to do more videos soon, but until then check out Mom Delights. Thanks for being here!
