McGuffey's Readers Language Arts: Level 5

Today we're going to explore my fifth and final McGuffey's Readers Language Arts Level. This level could easily extend into sixth grade. There is a lot of good material to worth with in this book. These lessons you built around the McGuffeys are so fantastic. Thank you. I am having our children read daily from them so they do not miss any of them and to give a gentle start to them. The plan is to have them follow your plans this fall. I follow a similar path with Minimalist Math program, having the children go through the entire plan....stopping to do weekly study as she suggest once I get them to where they are in their personalized level. They have independent studies from me, below their instructional level for daily work, but the tutoring time is for stretching and introducing skills. Our children are doing Rod and Staff English this year for a strong English focus year.

That sounds fantastic! I’ve heard good things about Rod and Staff. I’ve never looked at Minimalist math but now I’m intrigued! We recently switched to Right Start. The kids love it but it does require me to do the lessons with them so far. Luckily they don’t take very long and it’s open and go.

Always keep what works😁. Minimalist Math was built by a lady who based it on Singapore Math, she is a research scientist and only does math once a week with her children. I still want my children doing math daily, because we find it fun ( we are weird I know...lol). So each level is only 36 lessons, so one can review math with older children quickly. Each page has 10 problems, very well chosen. Math facts drill would need to be separate. I enjoy having subjects our children are independent in, while using separate resources to mastery with me. They do Rod and Staff Spelling independently, but I tutor patterns weekly.

I forgot to mention that her 1st to 7th is FREE! Her Algebra is going to be put on sale soon😁. I do one page a day until they are where their instructional level is and then slow it down.

Very well laid out. We’re using the original McGuffey’s but I’ve been on the edge of buying the revised for extra practice. My 1st grader loves to read and I need more material around the house she can pick up and read on her level to facilitate her confidence outside of lesson time. We went to the library last week and she read one Paúl Galdone book and The Little Fur Family all on her own. It was precious.
