I find it interesting that the quarterly strike is quieter than the hourly strike. Also, I find the Ode to Joy chimes an interesting change of pace :)

I think the idea is that the clock draws attention to the top of the hour. Imagine how detailed the movement is when it is softer on quarter hours and louder on the hour. Incredible innovation!

Hermle movements are great! I had a Hermle chain drive in a Ridgeway floor clock and it's been running perfectly since I bought it in 1990. It has never been touched or had a problem.

Beautiful. Why is it the musical movements on this clock are not put in other clocks such as Howard Millar? So many people love these songs.

Because Sligh wanted to do something very special and unique in this one. You could get a clock made with these choices if you were willing to pay $8,000 or more.

That flame mahogany is killer. Do clocks always have metal bushings? Do they ever have jewelled pivots like watches?

It’s rare, but yes you will find some clocks with jeweled bushings. Usually you only see this in fine antique Jewelers regulators. Clocks like ships bells use jewels in the platform, but even Chelsea uses standard steal on brass in the main portion of their mechanisms.

I just purchased a sligh grandfather clock. 2 rods are broken on the chime block. I would like to replace the entire block. Any suggestions on where I may find one? Really enjoy your videos and you taking the time to display all those beautiful clocks in your store.

A. Rod there is a company online called Timesavers. They have a variety of options. Another option (if you have the 2 rods)is to find a quality repair shop. They should be able to pull out the threaded portion in the top of the chime block and silver solder it back together. This should be cheaper and retain the quality sound the clock came with. The new rods do not always sound as good as the ones produced years ago. *MUST BE SILVER SOLDER NOT LEAD*

I love these videos! All the info comes from an actual clockmaker/horologist. I have a question if you don't mind: When it's time to make our clocks "fall back" and set them one hour behind, is it ok to push the minute hand backwards, or is it safer to go all the way around forward? Jonathan woodbury because Sligh went out of business before ever really having online catalogs. Here is the same clock made Bulova. Bulova bought all of Slighs manufacturing rights. No, pricing should be around the same as it has been the last 10 years or so. Of course this really depends on what you are looking at, new clocks will have gone up simply do to the cost of manufacturing going up, but vintage and antique clocks are holding about the same.

@@carwashslayer4235 I’m not sure what specific brass and glass you are speaking about, however it must be one from a while ago as I currently do not have any restored. Pricing varies greatly depending on the specific piece. That said, after restoring everything, most start around $1200.
