Odds are it’s just because of the lack of a tag axel. The tag helps with weight but also keeps a coach tracking straight. Without a tag you wind up chasing the steering wheel…the wander some. A tag makes a big difference.

Like a lot of simple repairs it is nearly better to simply pull the engine. I worked on lots of DD92's in Orion and Prevost bus' got to where it took about 45 minutes to pull the engine. Also makes for steam cleaning the engine much easier.

A guy I know that runs a 318 (8v71) in his log truck ran a regular Cummins type micro switch to the throttle lever on an L Bracket in his truck for the Jake so it worked like a Cummins, IE Would kill the engine if you left the switch on. He did it when he added Jakes to the truck but never changed to a standard buffer switch because it worked just fine.

"Jake", "Jake Brake", "Jacobs Engine Retarder" or "engine compression release brake" is a wonderful device that can save your life if properly used and maintained. One may be surprised to know that the 'father of the highway diesel engine', Mr. Clessie Cummins, designed & engineered its practical application & usage on todays road-going diesel engines.

The giant exposed belt. What does that drive up above? I used to drive a Maxim fire pumper with 250 hp six cyl inline Cummins. The Jake had a three position switch, off, low and high. Saved a lot on the brakes. There is nothing like that sound. It was a handful to drive. Steer, Air horn chain, Left foot siren, Right foot fuel and brake, Jake switch, Radio. Glad it wasn't a standard. The old Maxim's with the Waukesha gas engines were.
