As Blackadder seasons go on, his family and his own personal position reduces in power, but Blackadder himself increases in intelligence. In Season one he is at his most powerful and most stupid and ineffectual. Personally I really enjoy the characters and plotting in Season one, and love Blackadder’s behaviour given his final fate. So wholesome!

Season 1 was great. Remember, whenever you hear people complain about it, it was dumbed down later for the masses. 😆
@clairenoon4070 Жыл бұрын
Nah, it was just that it wasn't very funny, which is a bit of a problem for something purporting to be a comedy series. Things improved hugely as soon as Elton came on board.
@larryargent503 Жыл бұрын
@@clairenoon4070I don't disagree in general but it was a different sort of funny. Most of the comedy stemming from its basis on Shakespeare and the history. Ben Elton is the reason I said it was dumbed down. He was an alternative comedian, who specialised in appealing to the younger generation at the time. "We're in the stickiest situation since Sticky the Stick Insect got stuck on a sticky bun." is considered a classic line...I don't see the humour in it at all.

I don't think S1 is as bad as people think, but it certainly doesn't come close to the later shows. Blackadder Goes Forth (WWI) is sheer perfection from start to its (absolutely stunning) finish. One big non-spoiler fix in Blackadder II (Elizabethan) is a far more focused cast and setting.

Blackadder as seen in series 2 is the descendant(!)of this Blackadder. After all it's a couple of hundred years later! One of the threads through the whole thing is that times may change but people (and families) don't! This is particularly true of English nobility who have wielded power for centuries. When you get to the very end of the TV you'll find the 'millenium episode' (short film) 'Blackadder; Back and Forth' in which our heroes are seen in other pasts and futures. 'Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose'
@alisonhill3941 Жыл бұрын
Couple of hundred years? Half that. Series 1 starts in 1485, series 2 is in the reign of Elizabeth I (it's impossible to date the series exactly, as the Queen is clearly still relatively young but Raleigh features in one episode, and he was a favourite of hers in the 1580s, when she would have been almost twice as old as Miranda Richardson played her).

This series is not horrendous, but it's funny in a completely different way from what comes after it. It's probably better for you to watch it in this order, actually. If you watch it, as I did, after you have already seen the later ones, then it is considerably less funny, or at least it's funny in a different way. For one thing, Ben Elton did not become involved in the characters' authorship until the second series and so here, the differences in humour aside, with just Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson himself working on the script, it becomes more of a satirical take on Shakespeare than a satire of historical events. Significantly, it is the only series to make use of Brian Blessed (the King) and that is perhaps its greatest asset that makes it worth watching even if he doesn't have a major role in this particular episode. Still, you will find various things that are consistent: the Black Adder is still a dark-clothed man called Edmund and he's a sly, self-interested schemer even if he's not especially intelligent and he occupies the not-quite-top-dog role with the uphill battle that is common to all his descendants, Baldrick is still a filthy peasant even if he's not a fool as in subsequent series (notice how he also says his signature "I have a cunning plan" in this exact episode for the first time) and Lord Percy is a foolish sycophant, as in the second series (Captain Darling, played by the same actor in the fourth series is a foolish sycophant as well, of course, but he lives to impress General Melchett rather than Blackadder and so the humour changes again). So the genesis is there if only you look.

The reason myself and others do not rate the first series is quite simple , the writing is weak and Rowan hadn’t found his character yet , his portrayal is WAY over the top as to be frankly unwatchable , but that’s only my opinion . Maybe it’s coloured by my vast appreciation of the subsequent series . 👍🏴
