The reason Brits can sound American when they sing is that, phonetically, US English is simpler: It has fewer discrete vowel sounds, meaning more words can be made to rhyme (e.g. 'dance' and 'romance' only rhyme in some parts of the UK), and it has fewer diphthongs (sliding vowels); single-phoneme vowels are easily lengthened.

The real problem with American cars in Europe is that they are designed for very different environments. European roads are generally narrower twisting and better maintained while US roads are straighter rougher and far far longer this leads to American designers building for durability and simplicity while Europeans prefer light weight agile more technologically advanced vehicles.

The fun part is there was a car that was the template of all other cars , with Gas brake clutch pedals stearing wheel gear shift etc and it was british and gues what the stearing wheel was on the left side of the car. And to go back to that maritime nations have their captains sitting on the starboard side of a ship to see other ships that come from the right . he would give commands to the helms man at his left , now forward to the cars , as woman where clearly not fit for driving back in the day , and a woman captain even less. well they pulled the steering wheel to the right as it was more captain like . In practice around the world , the woman sits on the captains seat on the right complaining and pointing out navigating where you should have got of the freeway. Hence the steering wheel was always correct on the left side of the car,

When maps are produced showing the countries having left or right driving, they are misleading. The maps *should* show the size of the countries in terms of population. An example: Canada, a huge country with a teeny tiny population, drives on the right. The UK, a teeny tiny country with a somewhat larger population, drives on the left. Ditto the US (right). Japan (left). Check these figures. Oh, and let's not forget India, the population of which has either surpassed the population of China, or is about to. The Indians drive on the left. Bangladesh - left. Pakistan - left. Indonesia - left. Thailand - left. The map, properly adjusted, would look very different.

There are only 9 countries that call Football....soccer, but every other country on the planet calls it by it's only name Football. What Americans play is not Football because you do not use your foot to control the ball, kick the ball, pass the ball and then shoot the ball at the goal. Brake horsepower (BHP) is a more realistic horsepower figure than standard 'horsepower' (HP) quoted by manufacturers, etc. BHP is the actual horsepower the vehicle produces after taking into account all of it's friction losses from the engine, gearbox, alternator, etc. I had no idea that wasn't universal. The 'brake' part refers to the mechanism used to create said friction when conducting these tests.

You could just have said that HP is the power output at the crank and BHP is the power output at the wheels. The brake actually refers to the "at the brakes" (as in at the brakes on your vehicle, connected to the drum or the disc) because that is commonly where you attach the equipment. Today there are rollers instead but the definitions stuck... as they do. HP is a stupid fucking way to measure power output all in itself but we still use it even though we have far better units.

I am Belgian and our mother was Dutch. French-speaking Belgians have jokes about the Dutch, the French, the Germans, the English, the Spanish, Italians, Portuguese, Polish etc... And it's the same for each country, the French have jokes about all the others, the same for the Germans etc. It's universal, as long as people fall into different affiliation groups (cultural, linguistic, religious, athletic, whatever. When we were young, we teased our Mother with Dutch jokes and she teased us with of Dutch on Belgians. It is part of the experience of human beings due to a cognitive bias called 'ingroup bias' resulting from our status as social mammals. You have to see it like this: the past hatreds and wars that our different peoples have fought in the history of Europe - or for you, the history between the UK and yourselves - which is today enbeded in our local history, tales and legends etc, have been transformed into all kinds of more or less spicy jokes, no doubt, but it allows us to stop fighting together and leave past conflicts where they belong: in the past.

There are different types of horsepower out there, and you ought to know all of them, especially when buying a car, so the salesmen won't trick you into getting something that is less powerful than you think. Engine horsepower, a.k.a. indicated horsepower (IHP), is measured inside the cylinders, it is the highest amount an engine can produce. Break horsepower (BHP) is measured at the engine output and takes into account the friction losses inside the engine, hence it is lower than IHP. The law is something like 1 IHP ~ 0.99 BHP, which usually matters only in high performance cars with hundreds of it. Wheel horsepower (WHP) is the one measured where the wheels hit the tarmac, and since it takes into account the friction losses of the gearbox and drivetrain, it is lower than BHP, but will tell you what power the car actually produces. So, the car may be advertised as 500 HP, but at the wheels you may get 420, or even less, but you'll think you get a 500 HP car, because the engine produces that amount and the car salesman is actually right. Now, in the US it may not mean a lot, but there are countries out there such as France, where the car tax depends directly on the horsepower, and knowing the right amount is important, so you don't pay a larger tax than you are supposed to. Besides, it is the torque that matters. The American cars are laughed at for making small BHP from large engines, but their torque is greater than the one in the European cars with the same power output, hence they will be faster if they weigh the same. The law is simple: RPM - BHP - Torque: the American engines achieve peak BHP at lower RPM, but produce more torque. European cars achieve peak BHP at higher RPM, but produce less torque. But with the higher RPM comes another perk - they sound WAAAY better. And then we have the Japanese monsters, some of which are made to withstand 10,000+ RPM, which is why they sound like goddamn F1 cars, and make eargasms (like the Lexus LFA).

Regarding a French stranger speaking English to you. Your pronunciation may have been with an American accent, so they knew what language to use. Break horse power (BPH) is the horse power of a vehicle after accounting for the frictional losses in power from the engine. 185 BPH from a 2.4 litre engine is pretty pathetic when we can get the same from a 1.6 litre engine in Europe and Japan and use half the fuel. @stefantsarev4442
@stefantsarev4442 2 жыл бұрын
We have to account the wheel horsepower, which is the actual one the car uses (measured where the wheels hit the tarmac). It is even lower, because it is BHP, minus the friction losses of the drivetrain and gearbox. Also, the engines in the US and those outside of the world are somewhat different. The American engines are the more classic and simplified ones, made to get higher torque over lower RPM, which is why they need bigger displacements to make the needed horsepower. They are also heavier, so the losses are bigger. The European cars are smaller, but much more durable, because they are built to make more RPM and hence - more BHP, but less torque, and they use a double overhead cam, while the US cars have a single cam block. Make no mistake - the BHP is the thing everyone talks about, but it is the torque that really does the job. And, if you make a comparison between a European car, an American car and a Diesel car, all of which have 300 BHP, the American car will be faster than the European one due to the higher torque, and the diesel one will obliterate both, because the torque it will produce will be more than the combined one of them.

On the topic of how everyone knows you are an American when you travel abroad. The easiest thing is if you try to speak the native language - the accent you apply instantly shows which part of the world you are from. British, American or Australian - it's extremely easy to find out just from 2-3 words spoken in the native language. British and American are really easy to distinguish by the applied "R"s and Australians by the "A"s and "O"s. The intonation is also very different. But, usually, especially at restaurants, it's even before you ask someone something that we know - idk if you are aware of it, but you guys are always THE LOUDEST people around. So the moment you hear a loud person talking in English, it doesn't matter if it's the deep South-West accent or NY or SF, automatically we know they are American. Lastly, all across Europe English is now a well-established common international language, especially in the tourism sector.

The British drive on the correct side of the road because in days long past, a sword could be drawn and weilded by the right hand when on horseback, because we are a nation of warriors. It's the same reason male clothing buttons up with buttons on the right, so as not to get a sword snagged in the clothing. Womens clothing buttons up the opposite way.

That, and the only reason continental Europe is left hand drive was because Napoleon ordered every area he concquered to switch the side of the road they used as driving on the left was seen as ‘The English way’

Brake Horse Power is the maximum engine output from a standing start or the engine strength if you will. Americans talk about Engine size so you would go for a 5L engine over a 3L engine but the rest of the world talks about the BHP of an engine because if a 5liter engine produces 300BHP it is a fat, slow and wasteful engine and if a 1liter engine produces the same 300BHp it is the Usain Bolt of engines, slim, light and powerful. (Granted a 1L road engine has yet to achieve 150 BHP but it is the efficiency that counts)

Brits singing : We sound like that because most the music that influenced British music.. mainly Blues is from america.. Jazz too. So in the 50's and 60's brits covered and tried to replicate what they liked! Two obvious examples, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. As generations have gone by, it is still the sound our ears our used to, often with a southern drawl too. I find it easier to sing in an american accent. Also, there are more pronounced vowels and "R's" which give an easier singing experience. You are more limited with any british accent, bar maybe west country. Some famous bands that didn't use that (especially in early days) Chas and dave (Cockney), The Arctic Monkeys.. and .. Reverand and the makers (Yorkshire). There's a whole host of bands from Wales and Scotland that sing in their own accent.. and in the welsh case in their own language. It may be that you have only heard the bands that sound american. I only named a couple but there are loads out there!

Mick Jagger (rolling stones) was singing with a southern drawl back in the 60s. I'm pretty sure there was no autotune back then. If you wanted to be successful in the US it was easier if you sang with an American accent.

simple yet crucial difference between BHP and HP is how they're measured in the car. While horsepower measures the power generated by the engine, brake horsepower measures how much of the power produced by the engine is sent to the wheels which makes the car accelerate.

I guess the french person could tell by your accent. If you had a german, french, swedish, italian, australian etc ask you the same you could probably guess pretty much where they're from by their accent. Same with people from different states in your country or different regional accents here.

Brake Horsepower is the full name and measurement of power at the wheels- Americans just call it exclusively Horsepower and typically measure horsepower that exists in the engine. The majority of the world typically just uses horsepower loosely, but the British tend to use BHP because that's the only figure typically dealt with, how much Horsepower actually reaches the road.

I've heard that the speech Centre of the brain is wired to detect accents as quickly as possible. It may have something to do with being able to identify friend from foe and who's a part of your tribe vs who's not. That could be complete bullshit because I don't remember where I got the info from.

Dear Americans, you DONT play "football" ... because your "ball" ISNT SPHERICAL (which is another word for "ball" ... definitions are important and "ball" is NOT defined as "pig's bladder filled with air in any random shape") and you DONT USE YOUR FEET in connection with the ball (except on rare occasions). You guys simply play HANDEGG (which is only an approximation for the shape until a better term is found, because eggs are not pointy at two ends)!

10:20 Do you think you speak french without an accent that reveals where you are from? Do you think you LOOK FRENCH? 11:15 The POWER of an engine isnt measured in "litres" or "volume" ... but rather in HORSEPOWER. (Dont you know anything?)
@PiersDJackson

Just to pick up on the Question about Brake Horsepower (BHp), it's a more technical name for what in America would be Horsepower... as there are various forms of it, and Britain had for the first half of the 20th century, the Horsepower Tax, which was calculated from the engine displacement or partial dimensions. So you may have had a car which produced 95BHp but was taxed as 20Hp.

How are you surprised someone could tell you are an English speaker? Like surely you can hear where people are from by their accents when speaking English, so why wouldn't the French guy hear where you are from? Like, it's not perfect sure. But you come up and say some gibberish, it's hardly a stretch to try to use English instead. And it's not even a guess that you are American specifically, but it's hardly a wild guess that a white turist can understand English.

basically the point about horse power is generally British and European engineers can get 170 horse power from smaller engines, Americans put in a big block v8 and only get 170 power from 8 litre engine where as a british engineer would more realisitically get 300 to 400 horse power out of the same engine maybe more its really down to how you build your cars your engines are simple and if a car is thirsty well its a thirsty care, where as here in the Uk and europe its more about making an engine that can give you maxium performance and efficency because the cost of our fuel is eyewatering.

Yes English-speaker accent is rather apparent when they try to speak other languages. English speakers are among the most entitled in the world so basically everybody else recognizes them. Most people will likely not know what part of the Anglosphere you're from, but they will know you're English speaker. By the way Brits in recent years are about as fat on average as Americans... of course the extreme cases are more or less all Americans.
