So wild to see the videos I shot on your channel, never would have guessed 😂 Great analysis as always. All the years I’ve spent pulling my phone out on a moment’s notice to catch cool planes flying over finally paid off! He had the breaks locked up for a long ways, the skid marks on the runway were over 300 yards long. Was pretty obvious that he wasn’t going to stop in time. For what it’s worth, I did not hear the prop go into beta nor did I hear a particularly high power setting before I started filming. It sounded like idle. Of course I was near the end of the runway though so I don’t know what the touchdown looked like. When I talked to the pilot, he said by the time he realized he wasn’t going to make it it was too late to go around. The LX7 and similar airplanes do rely pretty heavily on beta for stopping power since they’re so sleek with such small tires. Not much contact area. Will be very interesting to see what the investigation determines!

He was originally destined to TKI but it was closed that day due to crack sealing. He made a stupid decision to land at T31 and makes all of us look really bad by crashing. He should have chosen Addison or North TX Regional. Big runways with procedures and towers. Sometimes T31 shows up as 4350 foot runway but only 3000 of that is paved. This guy was a doctor and you know what they say about doctors and airplanes. (eye doctor actually) It's really good that nobody was hurt though. Except for everyone's airplane insurance. And we literally just replaced that south fence a week ago.

I have done that!!! Well, not quite so bad. I landed long in our C-182 at our airpark and instead of hard braking I ran onto the grass at the end of the 3700 ft paved runway! There is a noise abatement procedure on RWY 03 so I landed with what I thought was a 3 kt tailwind on 21, but the tailwind was in fact 10 kts. Had I not had the grass, I would have gone around. No damage. Still, very embarrassing since everyone at the airpark knew-since I told them. And now, so does everyone here! 😁. No landing with a tailwind again. I'll use the dog leg on 03 in that case.

I knew the original owner builder ( Chuck Hayes from CH products in San Diego )and he was helped by the late Roger Huffman and Kevin ( then Chuck’s employee) of Tosten grips of this aircraft and was friends with them while they were building theirs while I was helping to build another. Chuck and Roger flew it to Oshkosh 2002 and it was bought by someone who just had to have it. I think Chuck and Roger had to take a commercial back home. This was built with a Walter 601-E 11 engine producing 750 horsepower. The new owner must have had it converted to a LX 7.Note the different paint, cowling, exhaust stacks, wing and tail on the accident aircraft than the one ( original model) shown by Juan earlier in the video. An LX 7 is where they take the original flying in a lot of cases fuselage of a Lancair IV -P and cut the tail off and bond a new one on, they also completely remove the original wing and install a different wing on and in this case they replaced the Walter engine with a PT6 engine with a pitot style inlet cowling to match. The original tail number is retained and I think it is still registered as a Lancair IV with the FAA.

Since there will always be overruns off the end of runways, how the fk did the city even approve of this neighborhood road going within feet of the runway. Like this little cute black fence is supposed to be impressed by a three thousand pound airplane about to slam into it. Such a joke.

T31 airport has 4300' runway, 3000' at the south end is asphalt and additionally 1300' at the north end is grass. Whole DFW metroplex was landing North that day (winds were like 050 at 7), this pilot elected to land South with downwind component. If they would have landed North - they would have had additional 1300' of grass to stop on. KTKI was NOTAM closed that day but they could have landed at KDTO or a whole bunch of other controlled airports with full firefighting capability on site.

considering the pilot made most of the journey at a lower altitude than originally intended, I wonder if the plane was low on fuel, contributing to the pilot's decision to continue a very sub-optimal approach, rather than performing another go-around.

@@bellboy4074 how bad was the first approach? If the first approach was only a little bad, then that may indicate fuel wasn't a problem, but unless you're flying deadsick it is always possible for an approach to be bad enough that continuing it is obviously worse than risking completely running out of fuel, which would then increase the pressure to land on the next approach.

This reminds me of when I was in the Air Guard and we had an F-100 go off the end of the runway. It went across the turnpike that ran perpendicular to the runway, hit a car killing the occupant and ended up sitting on the opposite side of the roadway. The pilot accidently jettisoned the drag chute when he deployed it and then the anti-skid system malfunctioned so he had no brakes. He tried to drop the tail hook and grab the arresting cable but it was too late. He went into afterburner trying to take off again but he was going too slow.

I'll be curious to see if there were any lingering effects from hypoxia, which would significantly contribute to pilot error (landing with a downwind component, picking a very short runway when compared to the other options, etc.). Like Juan said, it was quite a while after they descended, but who knows, everybody's body handles hypoxia differently. It wouldn't surprise me if it was involved.

You are absolutely correct. There was _nothing_ out there in early 80's. One summer, I flew one of two C206's (appropriately named duct tape 1 and duct tape 2) flying skydivers out of there. From recall there were only 3 or 4 hangars back then on the south end. It was the _Wild Wild West_ back then. On one of my early flights the jumpers saw that I was the newbie, so they thought it'd be a great joke to pull a prank on me, at my expense. Once at 10,500 one of the jumpers on the way out thought it'd be funny to turn the fuel selector to OFF. Got my attention for sure.

We wanted to fly our dates to dinner, go to prom then head out to do breakfast on the beach down near Galveston. We got about 20 hours into our training when we realized just how expensive it was. All of our extra money was going into plane rental and instructor fees. Go to school 5 days a week, work several hours after school, work Saturday and Sunday mornings just to be able to fly Saturday afternoons and have no money to take a girl to the movies on Saturday night. Our zeal faded out after a bit. LOL

@@MeppyMan woops! I did state that incorrectly. There are a number of houses along a taxiway….most houses in that “subdivision” include a hanger connected to their house. It was the taxiway on which I would run my laps. Carefully keeping an eye out for coming and going aircraft. There are a good number of simple hangers as well. It would be a wonderful place to live and raise a family….in my opinion. Of course there are many “private” runways thru the US of A with the same arrangement.

Pilot was clear headed enough to do a go around on the 1st attempt so I doubt hypoxia played a role. I would be curious to know if fuel was a factor. Obviously, he landed with fuel as I believe they said some was leaking at the crash site. I can imagine fear of fuel starvation could lead to rushing if fuel levels were indeed low.

GTSB report is out! After the oxygen failed at flight level 250, the pilot had been at that altitude for an extended time before the failure indication. He began to suffer from hypoxia and descended immediately. His judgment and his motor skills were still impaired from hypoxia causing him to misjudge his airspeed and approached high and fast and this accident is the result.

Not that long ago we found property to be sold at auction. The house needed work, no big since we've rehabbed more than half a dozen. There was decent acreage with the house, perfect for a small homestead. IDK why I pulled up Google maps.. but... the house was in a direct line with a rural airport runway less than a mile away. We didn't see it at the property due to thick woods. It's a small un-towered airport way off the main road and recently expanded to handle corporate jets. We passed on the auction. I believe Juan that accidents aren't more numerous, but man do we *see* them now thanks to cell phone video. The housing around the Midland airport is INSANE.

On the aero-medical side of things, hypoxia is less likely, they quickly got down below 10K and had ample time from the time they got below 10 K until the time they attempted landing. I think that takes out hypoxia. Seems like they rushed the landing & by sound of @xking18 they took a tailwind. Sounds like they lost their SA in setting up for the landing.

Juan, you were surprised when you saw the report sketching the incident spot. That surprised me too. How such a form made it into your video is really weird

Another post mentioned that this strip is just outside city limits. My guess is that it is technically unincorporated County jurisdiction instead of city. Real estate developers love to avoid city ordinances, city taxes and fees and especially city code inspectors. County admin probably doesn't pay attention to silly things like population density at the end of an old strip.

Had my Cherokee 180 at Aero Country for a number of years. For the unititated, this can be a bit of a difficult runway, especially if you are not used to it. Sad to see a nice airplane get bent up like that. My first landing at this airport when bringing my Cherokee for the first time was a nail biter, but after some practice, it certainly got easier.

I used to keep cars in a hanger at Aero Country years ago. Years before that, my folks' home airport was Dallas North Airport just to the South. (Mom did fly aerobatics from Aero Country in a CAP 10 ). Dallas North, a private field like Aero Country, was encroached by development (houses) and eventually the owners sold the property and it became... more houses. I imagine the same will be true for Aero Country one day. But my understanding is that since there isn't a single family that owns the airport they've got to reach a consensus with a bunch of property owners. But eventually I think they'll be pressured out of the airport business and the properties and structures will live on as a business / industrial park.

Very familiar with T31 as I did my tailwheel training there recently. It is in a very dense residential area, with not many suitable places for an emergency landing. If landing on 17 and using the grass portion of the runway, you have to literally come in very low and fly through a parking lot, and crossing pretty low above parked automobiles. It is not an airport to ever use for a divert of any kind!
@Orzorn

If I may ask, how was doing tailwheel out of T31 like? I did my PPL there and only ever landed in the grass maybe twice. Did you use the grass a bit more doing tailwheel? I was directed towards a certain somebody with a Super Decathalon out of T31 when I asked about doing tailwheel training a week ago or so. But yeah, I never did like landing there, honestly. It sucks on the windy days too when that wind sweeps off the top of those buildings off the departure end of 35.

My house is 7 miles South of that airport. It is a "condo" type airport, where people own and often live in their hanger-homes. I'm surprised he chose to land there, instead of the larger General Aviation airport not far to the East in McKinney. He probably could have had the airplane serviced there. Look like he rolled onto Virginia Parkway, a major roadway in McKinney along the border with Frisco. Those two cities have a combined population of over half-a-million people. IIRC, that roadway is four lanes, with a center median. He's lucky the road wasn't more crowded.
