McLaren MP4-12C vs Ferrari 458 | Top Gear

Whenever I see the Ferrari 458 and Mclaren 12c begin thrown against each other, I kinda see Niki Lauda and James Hunt's rivalry (just saw Rush). Strangely enough, though, Lauda was the calculated one, but he drove for ferrari, which has produced the passionate live for the minute car. And Hunt was the chaotic partyman, and he drove for Mclaren, who have produced the clinical, precise instrument. It feels like the spirits of the two driver got put in the opposite cars.

I think the car looks wonderful, even as a Ferrari fan. The very low, yet smooth and un-aggressive roofline is a true work of art, combine it with the alien-like rounded rear wing, the overall smooth shape of the car, the expressive headlights, the aggressive taillights and those wonderful gills, and you've got a perfect blend of futuristic engineering and modern art. A beautiful car.

MP4-12C very well may be ahead of it's time. That might explain why the popular opinion is "It's dull" or "doesn't have 'it' ", because you never truly know "it" when it's staring you in the face initially. Anyway, frankly I really dig it and it's a car that I keep in my mind and coming back to. Its quiet styling and stellar engineering. The color. Just something about it.

Anyhow seven years later and these McLarens are the best bargains in the suoercar world and I believe in another seven years they will finally be appreciated for the ultimate expression of precision we were capable of in 2010 ish. I think the 12C aged well. Considering you can pick them up for around 80k used now it is a very good entry super car on the used market. I however probably would still go for a first gen R8 V10, that sound is lovely

I had the absolute joy of stumbling upon a trailer today that was unloading a 12C from maintenance in Philly. Side note, there was a P1 and a 650S in the trailer going to someone else. Anyways, after about 10 minutes of me fawning over the car the owner invited me to ride shotgun in it, and let me say it was like nothing else. Criticizing a car that fast for being boring is like criticizing Chuck Norris for not being badass enough. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. In my eyes the McLaren is at least the Ferrari's equal

well the 650S and its replacement to be unveiled are the 488GTB competition (and the 650S is also a 458 Italia competitor). the 675LT is the 458 Speciale competition though as it is the track focused version of the 650S

I know. It's such a lovely sight. It amazes me how much is still hand made. It's truly a stand out product in a sea of automated welding machines and engines built on assembly lines. Mainly is because it has a small engine a 3.8 liter and turbocharged so it's quite compact than the 458 which is a 4.5 liter NA engine. But still if you trash it that hard then it certainly going to be 10-12 mpg probably

That's basically false advertisement from the manufacturer. Real world normal highway driving is about 18-20 range per US gallon. Spirited driving around town about 10mpg and I got a bit over 4mpg on the track. The darn thing always needs a visit to the gas station.

during fifth gear it was slower than the ferrari, because the driver was fighting the traction control, and the presenter said that it was programmed to work with mclarens drivers. In this video, the stig and the mclaren are a dream team with staggering results. Also, the mp4-12c was developed at the top gear track. I think the stig is a f1 driver from mclaren.

it's actually possible, it would make each turbo faster, pushing more air into the engine, the only problem is that the exhaust gas has to be able to push both turbines, and it would probably be harder until you reach higher speeds where the turbo really kicks in.

I get what Jeremy is saying, there is something special about owning a Ferrari, but the 'zing' on the McLaren is all about perfection. Both companies have their own way of being, and McLaren is like the genius who wants everything to be absolutely perfect -and he succeeds. I personally like the McLaren, and I think it makes more of an impression than the 458, because its so much rarer to see one at least where I live. I love the MP4, and someday I wish I can get one.

You can't ignore it. 12C is better than 458 Italia. No matter acceleration, lap times, MPG, handling etc... Not to mention 458 got a better tires. McLaren rule 458! Not to mention 0-60 and 1/4 mile really tells how aggressive the traction control is. MP4 RWD able to do 0-60 in 2.7s and a 10.37s stock 1/4 mile time.

Having driven neither, I can't comment on which one drives better overall. I think the McLaren looks better though, the new gen Ferrari's look too much like a bug...I think the 430 was prettier. On the lap time though: let's not forget that Ferrari sends cars which have tuned engines and non-stock tires to journalists so that it performs better. That means the laptime the Ferrari 458 posted was faster than it really would be for the customer.

True, same as Lambo sending the LP610 with Trofeo R tires to journalist for better lap times. Instead of standard tires. However, talks about drive dynamic, 458 may be better coz the 458 got limited slip differential and more camber angle vs MP4 open diff with electronics sensors to control speed between two wheels, works same as 997 Carrera S. Anyway, the MP4-12C did a very good job in kicking 458 ass on tracks.

+NISMO N ATTACK 東瀛戰神 I don't get why exactly brit's hate on this masterpiece... We purchased a MP4-12C Spider about 3 days ago, I don't even get what they're talking about? It rumbles! The scoops on the side door, and that big air-brake.. man it looks aggressive, and acts aggressive , but switch that powertrain + handling knob to Normal... and it acts like a Bentley... amazing!

I sat in one of these today at a car show, things are sweet... Although there was also a 458 italia there, the guy wouldn't let me sit in it since he was no wheres to be found, but so the coolest guy for sure had a f430, he didn't only let me sit in it, but also start it and rev it up too

@@saralshrestha5389 i’d argue it’s almost an inverse though, everyone wants a ferrari, laymen think all fast cars are ferraris, but they wont sell them so people deault to the supercar companies that will sell, mclaren and lambo are notoriously greatly generous on who they sell to, and car guys generally dislike them for it. Atleast the folks i’ve talked to feel that way
