Hey Robert, I think you may need to make a bit of a clarification regarding your comment about "driving the same roads... up and down the canyons". That felt _awfully_ like you were directly throwing shade at Matt Farah. If you were in fact doing so, you should come right out and say so. If you _didn't_ intend your viewers to make that connection, then I think you really need to clarify that in a follow-up video. Especially because the message is pretty muddied, as Matt is _both_ a traditional automotive journalist (and indeed, a contributor to Road and Track specifically) _and_ (quite obviously) a pretty damned notable automotive KZbinr - and a pioneer in that latter regard.
@RobertMitchell3 жыл бұрын
I like Matt. Have no issue w him AT ALL! But does he get the car based on R&T relationship or his YT relationship w mclaren? My simple point is that no name owners will sell more cars than he will and that’s a fact I think we could back up here easily without having to insult Matt who has done nothing wrong
@alistairwillock72663 жыл бұрын
@@RobertMitchell OK, got it. You _were_ referring to Matt, but you weren't trying to throw shade his way. Instead, you were trying to make the (most likely valid) point that the kind of coverage yourself and Brookes provide of your own cars provides better customer engagement than a Smoking Tire review. I think that's fair, and your clarification absolutely fits with the rest of the content of the vlog. Just be aware that I'm likely far from the only person who might potentially misconstrue your intent there. I specifically asked the question because I'm familiar enough with this channel and your prior content to have a pretty high opinion of your character - so I asked you to clarify your intent instead of just jumping to a conclusion. Quite a few other viewers who arrive with less prior goodwill may not be as charitable.

I mean there are good and bad people everywhere. I‘ve made some good experiences with porsche dealers but I‘ve also had contact with som less than great employees. For example one salesperson who refused to sell a car that had been sitting in the top spot in their showroom in munich for 6 months (without anyone having serious interest in buying it), because it was 5min before closing. Didn’t even write down a name, phone or email. Just said don’t worry, nobody is going to buy that car away from you. It took a lot of work to get hime to even put a „sold“ sign in it. Waited a week and went back, spoke to a different salesperson, this time a competent one, negotiated a bit, got the car and it’s been well since then. My point is that yes porsche is quite good in the service department but you still have to look out for some black sheep.

I try to promote in my limited way the McLaren brand , to insult these guys is totally out of order , unnecessary and has not been thought through. Ehh it sounds like it was a pre-production car, in the press car world there are rules about how cars are handled. For most manufacturers, if a press car left the custody of the people the car was signed off to and was driven hard on track they'd be upset. There are a couple of reasons for this, liability, the fact that a pre-production may not have details finalized, and there may be embargoes involved. The way social media has evolved though, the reasoning probably doesn't really make as much sense today as it would've 10 years ago. McLaren marketing handled it clumsily and clearly shot themselves in the foot. The dealership probably should have had better judgment, but not Brooks from Dragtimes' fault.

Everything you've stated here is absolutely spot on. 1) The last time I bought an automotive magazine was back in the early 2000s. Who even reads those things anymore? 2) I would ABSOLUTELY 100% get my research on cars to buy and arrive at an informed decision by REAL OWNERS or these cars via objective real world empirical data from KZbinrs. For the purpose of being explicit, I would absolutely NOT waste a single minute trying to get what I consider as "reliable information" from Car journalists knowing full well that a half day photo shoot and the need to embellish information based on a short stint with the car does not qualify as being reliable information in the real world (to make my purchasing decision on a big ticket item such as a supercar). 3) If the VP of Maclaren Marketing doesn't get that, he has NO BUSINESS sitting in that seat. 4) I watched this video because of the title drag times which happens to be a channel I subscribe to and watch every episode to build on my personal schema on the real world pecking order of supercars featured in that channel. Imagine what that car is capable of with upgraded turbos, downpipes and a tune I’d imagine a low 8 maybe high 7 second 1/4 mile. I’ve not picked the car up yet, it’s still being built and my order is expected to arrive mid-summer and it costs $365,000 and I wouldn’t have spent that money if not for Brooke’s. I never would’ve considered a McLaren without his videos because there are just so many known issues but his positivity about the car convinced me. Now I’m nervous, it’s the most money I’ve ever spent on anything... including my house and now I’m wondering if I want to spend that money to get involved with a brand that treats its owners that way. The joys of the current age is that anyone can broadcast their opinion. You don't have to go and buy a magazine or look for a dedicated website to read an opinion and find out information about any specific car. For better or worse this means that good opinions can be shared and gain traction if it provokes interest or discussion. Owners are the feedback prospective buyers need. Loving what you're doing with impartial advice (unless it's spray-tan) and opinions on cars you own. It provides and insight to what many owners hope to do (run TF laps) and rather than speculate they can see first hand how a car they may consider buying is for the owner. I'd rather see and hear this than X journalist for X marketing/sales/broadcasting team power-sliding the car around an empty airfield slaying someone else' tyres (they don't have to pay for). I hope one day to research buying a new super/sports car and finding niché reviews by owners like yourself to give a real world example of the vehicle.

As a 600LT owner I totally agree with your comments. When I ordered my car I was told it would be in limited supply like the 675LT was previously, then the story changed to say they will only be making the 600LT for one year, then of course I was told that of course the Coupe will be made for 1 year and the Spider for another year. McLaren make great cars, but they are unleashing too many variations and not respecting their customer's investments. I love my 600LT but know I have already taken a much bigger hit on value than I would have had I purchased a 488 GTB. The local dealer in Toronto was the most successful worldwide (selling more cars) than even the UK dealers, and quite honestly they are a great dealer with great service, but its the company North American head office and base in the UK that are creating an untenable situation for them and their customers. Instead of focusing more on quality, offering better warranties to the entire line, coming out with less variations, and enhancing the value of their customers cars.

And the sad thing in most of this old companies is that they don't get serious about the opinion of the new "opinion leaders" and don't let new faces with fresh and new knowledge to join them. As a marketeer who companies don't want to hire, because I'm too young and don't have the experience is frustrating most of the times.. This video is going VIRAL Robert :)

Great video. Such a smart and insightful man with some seriously impressive driving skills. I’m 23 and I loved brooks video. Seeing that car and the enjoyment he expressed it was motivating to me and enjoyable. His reach goes so beyond just who can immediately buy a car like the elva. He’s painting this reputation for this new brand that is influencing and inspiring people to buy this brand. Can’t believe they made him take the video down.

Great video and everything you said was spot on. Brooks channel is also very good and what he does and says is worth noting and taking into consideration when it comes to getting your next fast car. McLaren need to get rid of this VP in America as he quite clearly doesn't have a clue on what it going on in the world and where new car owners get a large chunk of their information from.

Another fantastic video Robert, so glad you covered this topic as well! Brooks has been one of the best McLaren ambassadors out there, he did so much incredible marketing for 720S and 765LT, he probably resurrected 765LT by himself! So what that guy did is complete stupidity, I can't even comprehend that level of ignorance at such position 🤦🏻♂️ And also like many I've never even heard about 620R before you got yours, you did so much for that car. That guy needs to be fired asap, and not because of what he did to Brooks specifically, but because he has no clue about the job he is being paid big bucks for

There are a couple of reasons why I stay away from McLaren: 1- lack of dealer network and warranty / warranty issues reported to me by McLaren owners 2- They make too many models. Robert did a great job arguing these points along with others. Having car owners share success or issues with their cars, regardless of the make and model, should always be used by auto makers as a way to study their product better and find ways to improve it or capitalize on it.

The key question is, did this Brookes guy have the car with the express permission of the owner, ie Mclaren solely in order to carry out a commercial review of the product (as in he makes money from a you tube vid of the car) or did he dupe the dealer into lending the car to him for free by making out he was a potential purchaser, with them having no idea he was going to rag the arse out of it, make paid for vids of such? then just hand it back and stroll off into the sunset to cash the you tube cheque?

I couldn’t agree anymore with you about this. I can guarantee that brooks has had an influence on more people buying McLaren than all the “automotive journalists” combined. I have ZERO experience in marketing and I even know this. It’s laughable really. If I were brooks I would have a super sour taste in my mouth and be tempted to promote the hell out of another brand, or not buy another Mclaren

What about Journo times done on different tracks? How trustable are they? For example how is a Porsche Turbo S almost as fast as an Aventador SVJ on Hockenheim and is 1.2 secs quicker than Huracan Evo while on other tracks it's barely faster or even slower than Huracan Evo?

I mention this in the vid. Somehow 765 was slower than 720?!

Interesting. Well structured arguments Robert. As a 'young person' in a large company, this seems to me like a typical situation where an individual in a senior role has a backwards mentality and has been blinded by decades of the status quo; whereas likely the social media teams for Mclaren who are (probably) younger are much more aware of the modern day marketing strategies and would be so frustrated themselves at their VP making these comments.

Thanks for making this video Robert, you are spot on. There are very few automotive journalists who could afford many of the cars they review. There are automotive KZbinrs that are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions on cars. They are driving them as they were intended to be and for a long term. In many respects, they should be considered automotive journalists. And they are absolutely selling cars for the brands.

On the topic of traditional vs new automotive marketing. I had 0 knowledge that Dodge was coming out with a widebody version of the Scat Pack Charger in 2020 until I saw a fairly small at the time KZbin channel do a review of it. Her genuine reaction to driving it and experience instantly peaked my interest in the car so I watched a few more reviews, all youtubers. I then went out the same week and ordered one without even driving a Scat Pack. I went from no interest to owner with 0 traditional media input and I've loved the car in the year I've owned it all because one girl had a good time and expressed it.
