"Humposaurus" definitely lacks something compared to "Spinosaurus."

Not necessarily something we get wrong but dinosaurs are mostly depicted with open mouths. I guess it’s to give them a dramatic „roaring“ pose but we don’t know if they actually did roar and it’s overdone in paleoart.

This is even present in museum mounts, and it's not exactly the worst reason either. Theropods have essentially a wrap-around overbite, I had the pleasure of seeing a closed-mouth theropod skull recently and as brilliant as it looked, it was a little goofy looking.

i think more fantasy worlds need to use old paleoart as references for creature design, when done well they can look SUPER cool

You did this video 3 years ago, why my brain decided to remind me of it is beyond me but it seems you added new stuff my brain didn't remember from the last one lol XD Still a very fascinating subject, so glad more people can learn about all the kooky ideas paleontology has gifted the world XD

Can you do an analysis on the jowled vs exposed canines hypothesis on the sabre tooths. Has the new frozen homotherium cub discovery answered this debate?
@GalvyTheTom
@GalvyTheTom Ай бұрын
Considering how relatively short Homotherium’s sabers were, I don’t think it’d really help much on that matter.

Pretty sure it’s been proven through some skull analysis that the cats with the really large fangs had the mid base and tips exposed. The smaller fanged sabers had them most likely covered

What about the possibility of trunks (or trunk-like structures) on sauropods? My reasoning being the fact that their nostrils/nasal cavities are often high on their heads...what else has high nasal cavities on the skull? Elephants.

I have a question when Triceratops were alive did triceratops horns grew from around the eyes sockets and connected to the nasal horn like a armor for the faces or grew from just the forehead per say above the eyes sockets like a jackson chameleon.

But again another great video keep evolving to a greatness.

I don't remember what video it was, or even how long ago I saw it, it one of your videos covering something similar (proposed ideas for reconstruction without good scientific backing) made me think. What if at least some of these more wacky ideas, especially ones that only go back to the dinosaur renaissance, are done with full intention and knowledge specifically to be a bit wacky so as to push the envelope. Basically a "alright, so prove me wrong! Maybe you'll discover something unexpected in the process" - like with the debate over if spinosauros swam or not. In the effort of proving the other side wrong, the researchers on both sides looked at things that hadn't been looked at quite so thoroughly as before, and everyone learned new things. Not that I think either the crane like model or the swimming model was proposed with the intention of being proven wrong, just idk how else to really explain what I mean 😅 I'm much more of a spectator on this kind of thing, the few ideas I have are more about how use spectators think about what's going on, and not so much useful for speculation... so I've got no ideas for what else might be wrong or right 😅 But I still need to get a copy of that one book that does speculative art of modern animals reconstructed in the ways that paleo artists reconstructed dinos at the time, cause I think that's a really cool way to point out some common pitfalls that are super easy to stumble into As always, I super enjoy watching your videos even if I don't comment much! ^•^

There's irony here as some early Tricertops fossils were mistaken for Bison, they even made up a new species of Bison based on those fossils before someone figured it out.

One of the features currently in vogue as regards reconstructions of Triceratops, which I hope eventually makes it to PaleoFAILS----are the 'mustachio' horns tips. I prefer them straight and menacing, rather than upturned and fancy.
@GalvyTheTom
@GalvyTheTom Ай бұрын
Is there any scientific/biological reason to prefer one over the other? Because otherwise, this just feels like a matter of personal preference.
@charlesmartin1121
@charlesmartin1121 Ай бұрын
@@GalvyTheTom Yes of course. Although more like personal aesthetic preference.
@paxlash
@paxlash Ай бұрын
If it’s just a matter of personal preference, then why would it be a “fail”?
@charlesmartin1121
@charlesmartin1121 Ай бұрын
@@paxlash Because right now it seems to be the prevailing view on how Triceratops horns were structured, but based on little or no evidence. So if an adult specimen is found with the keratin sheath still attached, and there are no upturned distal horn tips. Then the current thinking is disproven...hence a PaleoFAIL.

Doesn't make sense. That would just be an ear, and they had external ear holes. They probably didn't have external ear cartilage and flesh like us mammals, but if they needed it they could've evolved it. Much easier than evolving the entire back of the skull for that.
@spamletspamley672
@spamletspamley672 Ай бұрын
@@EDGEscience They had no power to evolve it, but you can see right away that it will act as a sound collector whether they wanted it or not. Also compare the tragus 'horns' in front of bats ears, that are thought to aid in targetting points in the vertical plain. The horn arrangement in front of the ruff is quite similar. The holes would also likely aid in differentiating sounds coming from behind.
