1) John Donaldson 2) Dick Allen 3) Ken Boyer 4) Luis Tiant. There is quite a bit of research out there on Donaldson and a few good KZbin Videos including a little clip of him pitching. A great story worth getting to know. He got quite a bit of support on the previous classic era ballot and with only one other (Jose Mendez) black pitcher in the hall from the pre-Negro League era (before 1920) I think he's got a good chance. Also doesn't hurt that John McGraw, who managed Christy Mathewson ,says Donaldson was the best pitcher he had seen back in that 1910's era. He didn't get a playing era card, but is in the 1978 Laughlin Long Ago Black Stars set and has a 1986 card in the Larry Fritsch set of Negro League Baseball Stars for his earliest cards.

I can't speak on the Negro League players, but Allen, Parker and John all deserve to be in the Hall and personalities have kept two of the three out so far. Allen and Parker's playing careers should have gotten them in a long time ago. I have heard over and over that Tommy John is a compiler and if that's the argument against him, it could be argued that Nolan Ryan was a compiler as well. He played a long time, but during that time he had comparable stats to Hall of Fame players; Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven and Robin Roberts. He also missed a year and a half in what would be the prime for many pitchers having what was then a experimental surgery. Then he pitched for another 18 years. Finished top 5 three times and 2nd in the Cy Young twice.

I think they should stop veteran/classic era committee elections. If you missed it when you were on the ballot 15 times (most these guys were part of the old rules), then you missed. There are enough Lloyd Waners and Bobby Doerrs in the hall already. In fact the one player I would consider because he DIED while he was playing would be Munson because he also played a high value position and his numbers compare highly with some of the best in the hall.
@benjaminlyng82693 күн бұрын
Agree 100 pct on these antiquated committees. They served a purpose at one point in history, but now all they are good for is putting marginal candidates in the hall. Re Munson - the writers could’ve done a special election after he died similar to the special election they had when Lou Gehrig got sick. But they chose not to.

Ken Boyer lost 2 years to military service. Has more hardware, and didn’t get to hit in Wrigley compared to Santo. Arguably the best 3b in the NL for several years🎉 (examples are AS game selections and gold gloves). For vintage card collectors he appears on many league leader/AS/WS cards from 59-65.
@calronske18533 күн бұрын
I lived in Chicago so Santo trashing is not allowed but Kenny Boyer is ALSO a HOF-er. These 2 guys were outstanding. Period. End of discussion.

@@calronske1853 I wasn’t speaking of Santo negatively. I do believe that if Boyer had those 2 years and played in wrigley he would have much higher counting stats.

You shouldn’t combine player and manager attributes because this guy is being a valuated as a player. There’s a separate process for managers on the Veterans committee. However, we should not be putting any more managers in the Hall of Fame.

I'd take Garvey over Dick Allen. Numbers similar but Garvey played in major pennant chases and playoff games and exceled as well as 2 all star game mvp's. Not sure Dick Allen has any moments to point to. Tommy John for his success after the surgery named after him deserves to be in the hof.
@calronske18532 күн бұрын
@@gregmalone5302 common sense says they BOTH are HOF'ers. Garvey didn't have the same real life path Allen had in 1963 but I wouldn't hold that against him either. I lived thru his 1972 season...not sure if Garvey could have done what he did to a no-name team and a city. Can't make broad and not really thought-out statements on players who take thousands of different paths. Been watching players from 1956 on and will only comment on players I know all about.

Nice chat. Love your channel when i can find the time. The BBHOF should not be the hall of statistics. Nor should it be a make-up for prior indiscretions or appeasements. Is longevity the baseline? Because you played longer and had more stats, should you get in? I saw both Dick Allen and Tommy John play in Chicago and both were truly remarkable. Did they sustain over their careers ? No. I saw Parker play for both the Reds and Pirates (the coke boys). He I believe is deserving but his drug problems cloud his legacy. I remember Boyer in 64 but I was too young to comprehend it. Mr Perfect Garvey killed the Cubs in 1984 but if he had played in a small market no one would remember him. El Tiante was good for baseball. I would vote for him based on that fact alone. I am not running for President but I approve this message!

This discussion has got me annoyed as hell. Right off the bat, is Dick Allen. You brought in a guy who knows absolutely NOTHING about Allen. All he did was mumble and stumble at first and then starts in with the negative garbage. You didn't help either, Mike. His career was affected before he even GOT to Philly with racism in the deep south. He almost went home. That's why he always wore a batting helmet in the field-stupid people throwing crap at him. Stats are nice, but the ONE stat that people NEED to know is that from 1964-74 eleven yr span, his OPS was only .001 behind Hank Aaron. Yeah, that Aaron. All his issues were with the press. Wow, only guy that didn't get along with the press?? That, to me has ZERO bearing on HOF qualities. It's vindictive voters who are butt-hurt by Allen. It's disgusting. Then I lived through the 1972 season as a 16 yr old. He still is #1a with me. Look at that team roster & honestly tell me they would close to overtaking the mighty A's?? He was an amazing player and they wait until he's dead. Good job guys.
