As Hong Kong struggles to contain a third wave of Covid-19 infections, the government has ordered restaurants to close their dining areas and only offer takeaway services. The measure has forced hundreds of people who sleep overnight at 24-hour McDonald’s branches, so-called McRefugees, out onto the city’s streets.

This is why violent protests and riots are despicable. If you want to protest you could do civil disobedience or boycotts. No need to damage other's properties. The homes are not "destroyed", they're just full of literal trash and moldy food items that a person can't even move comfortably. Imagine if you're forced to live in an environment like that, forced to live in a home that's practically never cleaned, full of insects and rodents, and were fed moldy food. wish i could help this old lady, but her story about how she became homeless seems a bit iffy. If she's speaking the truth, she'd rather be homeless than repair her home after it was burglarized. I suspect there is something more going on, perhaps domestic abuse, or some other issue that is preventing her from returning to her previous home. Honestly, though, it is just pure speculation and there are countless possible reasons to why she is in the situation she is in right now. This is definitely not a homeless person but a mentally ill elderly woman who actually has a place to live but stays outside and its hard to believe her children wont help in anyway..she is even ssid she has savings she uses ..other are forced out of their homes lose jobs or they dont have any money all the main reason anyone would be homeless. This lady needs counseling not handout .

There isn't enough information to make that judgement call imo. She talks about not wanting government hand outs because she doesn't want to lose face. She is a tough broad that grew up in a different time. She wants to be able to make it on her own, without relying on others. She mentioned her children briefly. They probably don't want to help her. HK doesn't offer many services as far as counselling or mental health assistance. She wants to be an independent person and not rely on others. Note that she said the biggest crime she's made is stay at Mcdonalds all day. This is a proud lady, who no doubt had hardships. She talked about her place being trashed and the cops didn't seem to really care. That's the sad reality in HK.

Breaks my heart to see there are still so many elderly people uncared for these days....what are her children doing???? Leaving their parent outside to take care themselves out in the streets at this age ... I wish the Police could have helped her case or her children offer her a place seriously.. at her age I wish she could at least have a place to rest and live in peace and comfort 😣

I grew up in HK. There are so many people who can't afford a home. Reminds me of LA and London. This is what unfettered capitalism does to the world. It's from greed.

My Apartment got burglarized...too messy? Let's sleep outdoors instead of cleaning up with own hands, let's blame this plight on children. Want to have more leg room? How about kick the guy in front...say it was not intentional even when it clearly was, insult the man, refuse to apologize willingly...Could have asked nicely if he mind moving somewhere politely? Nah Because I am an 81 year old woman, my children owe me, the guy in front was in my way.
