Honestly he's produced such an unprecedented string of competent films, it'd be nice to get his real thoughts, just for posterity. Because Hollywood has always been/is still a mess of incompetence. Personally: I've disliked some Edgar Wright films, so I find it plausible that he had some poor ideas that Feige vetoed. The 2010s may be a golden age of corporate whoredom, but we've seen original filmmakers fail a lot, whereas Feige's zen sense of "sucking" actually seems like a kind of miracle (even James Bond movies get pretty bad, at "Thunderball.") Yet his unwillingness to say things suck is just PR. I.E., if Feige's "genius" is almost hilariously basic and simple, like the ability to look at a script and say "this sucks," then let's hear about it.
@Daddyvader7
@Daddyvader7 6 жыл бұрын
gibberconfirm I agree. I think it's deeper then just looking and saying it sucks. Fiege has alot of pressure and stress on him plus over seeing everything. But he enjoys doing it. I think Edgar is right, he wasn't a good fit for the project. I prefer what we got with ant man. They give alot of directors that fit freedom of course to bring new ideas but they still gotta follow the script in a sense. From my POV, KEVIN really thinks Edgar was a good fit at first but sometimes it doesn't always work out for a number of creative reasons and differences. Edgar can be salty about it, but if he wasn't what they 100% wanted then that's the way the cookie crumbles

Before you began to ask for things that sounds reasonable to you, you have to consider why things are the way they are. In this case, you're asking to hear the real reason why Feige decided to let Wright go, but if you have seen previous interviews he's done where he was asked such questions where his answers can only be damaging to not only him but also the other parties involved, you should know by now that as long as he is who he is, he will never do that. Like that time where he was asked about the Inhumans movie, or when he was asked to react to the recent comments by James Cameron. He will always try to make a positive spin out of a bad situation. Also, if you were paying attention to the news when Wright departed, you should have been able to read between the lines and have an inkling of what happened behind the scenes. Wright has been working on the project off and on for close to a decade, and ultimately decided to come on-board only because film-making technology has caught up to his vision. However, while his story and settings for Antman has not changed as much, the worldview of the MCU did, to the point where Wright's vision could no longer be a part of the current MCU , be it because of the time-period it takes place in, or certain story elements of his vision. People loves to pity Wright when they hear that his decade long work went down the drain in an instant, but failed to consider the fact that he was never working on the project full-time for that entire decade. After all, he made quite a few movies in the past decade. You have to be delusional to believe he was writing Antman at the same time as he was working on those other films. In fact, the one person who has the toughest job in Antman was definitely Payton Reed. Remember, those movie stars signed on partly because of Wright's vision, and because they wanted to work with Wright. For example, it's a miracle Douglas actually decided to stay on the project after Wright left, contracts reason aside. Marvel has already shown in Red Skull's/Hugo Weaving's instance that if an actor does not want to appear in any movies that he's contractually obligated to appear in, they will simply give him that freedom. Besides, certain elements from Wright's script was still kept in the final script, enough to get him a screenplay and story credits in the finished product. He didn't direct it, and the executive producer credit is most likely just for show, but the Antman movie you see on screen definitely has parts that reminds one of Wright's work.

I think he is trying to avoid further conflict between the studio and the director. The same with edward norton, both are good actor and director but were not a teamplayer. They wanted to do their own thing. They may create a better (or may not) and award winning movies if they are incharge but they arent marvel movies.

In fairness to Feige regarding the Edgar Wright question, Feige is very clearly the one in the position of power. For him to make a sort of claim directly addressing Edgar Wright’s experience would be tactlessly unprofessional at best. It’s one thing for a director to air a grievance about working with a studio, it’s another thing entirely for a CEO or Executive Producer to unload dirty laundry about a director during a press junket.
@VlogwithKing
@VlogwithKing 6 жыл бұрын
It's was a good move for him to politely decline to be negative towards anyone. You're right. Feige is in power. Love Edgar Wright, but he probably just had a difference of opinion is all. Since Feige has the track record of creating this massive universe. I'd trust Feige's judgment in ensuring that Ant man fits in with the grand scheme of things. This is so much bigger than Feige or Edgar Wright.

Edgar Wright would of made a great movie, he's a huge Ant Man fan and insanely talented. But whether it was because the film was taking too long or Wright was being too outlandish with the movie, what we actually got i'm sure would of been the better result. Unlike Fox who hires talented and aspirational filmmakers, lets them make their movie, then edits it to oblivion. DC did this with Suicide Squad and im glad Marvel assured we got a decent movie (Ant Man is one of my favorites hands down in the MCU) compared to an artsy but ultimately studio mandated film. If his vision wasn't working or would of made the MCU as a whole wildly inconsistent then that's simply what happens. Same thing happens in comics too, its not uncommon to ensure a better overall end product at the cost of talent or a vision

It's just annoying because in Iron Man 3 he clearly let Shane Black take the movie in his own personal direction, and I'm always reminded of his other great films when I go back and revisit it. I feel like Marvel could have given that same leeway with Edgar Wright. He just made Baby Driver which is basically a heist film, and that movie kicks ass.

Yes. I think Feige is very professional, very respectful a true gentleman besides a great visionary. It's good that he is in that position of power because he has done nothing but driven the MCU to a position of leadership in the industry. but is not about that and that's not his gold, his gold was is and will always be as long as he runs Marvel Studios, to create great stories and do the best possible to, I wouldn't say recreate, but mostly make the best cinematic version of the Marvel comics possible. in wich task he widely succed. And I really admire how he allways answers this kind of questions regarding issues with directors or trash talking from other people against the MCU with politeness and respect never getting into the mud. That's very inspiring and admirable... for me he's a giant, but humble respectful and grownded when others in his position could be and some actually are, all the opposite of that.

@adil9772
@adil9772 6 жыл бұрын
I Meme You just look it up on the internet. Incredible Hulk was a rushed production, they started shooting without a finished script, plus Edward Norton was trying to influence the movie way too much, so the producers recast him with Mark Ruffalo for the rest of the series. Iron Man 2 was also rushed, and I believe that at that point Jon Favreau and the Marvel Studios didn't really part on good terms (apparently they have reconciled a bit since then, but he'll not be directing another Marvel blockbuster anytime soon). Iron Man 3 was also not without its problems, there was a degree of Disney meddling with the movie, cause initially the main villain behind Ben Kingsley's "Mandarin" was supposed to be Maya Hansen, but Shane Black was forced to rewrite it, so that Aldrich Killian would be the main big bad, as to boost the toy sales. Age of Ultron was also tough for Joss Whedon. He was forced to include that weird "Thor in the cave taking a bath" subplot and had to fight the studio executives to keep the scenes with Hawkeye's family and had to keep the runtime not exceeding the runtime of original Avengers (2h20min I believe), which is not that easy with the movie that had so much going on. Ant-Man had Edgar Wright leaving the production, although he was heavily involved with the film for a number of years prior, writing the original version of the script (which was praised by Joss Whedon) and apparently making some previs and storyboards. Thor 2 has also turned out to be quite different than originally intended. From what I could gather, originally the villain was more compelling but they reshot significant chunks of the movie a few months before the release. I know that every film ever has certain issues during the production, but the quality of the movies I have mentioned was visibly influenced by all of the behind-the-scenes trouble. I'm not saying that these movies are outright bad, some of them are quite enjoyable (like Ant-Man), but they could have been better or more interesting, if more care and creative freedom was put into them.

@sirmoonslosthismind
@sirmoonslosthismind 6 жыл бұрын
it's very possible that both of those things are true. marvel called brolin once, and brolin was professional during that call -- enthusiastic but non-committal. while thinking about it, brolin called ruffalo, and they discussed it. then, brolin called marvel back to accept the role. brolin didn't go back and forth with anyone at marvel.

This is why I hate most of comic book fanatics and adaptation purists, who understand thoroughly every development and culmination in the narrative of superhero comics across decades but who are unable to fathom that the cinema is trying to build its own arc instead of just animating their most favorite comic book panels and pages. Feige just made it all the more sense here why Tony Stark had to be the one who invented ultron in the MCU. He has always been the futurist, the constantly worried, cursed with knowledge. And by the time AoU came out, that splendid devopment in Tony Stark's journey in the MCU was just responded by "why not keep to the comics. Ultron should be made by Hank Pym" I was so pissed reading that kind of comment all over the internet.

I will defend Iron Man 3 to my death. That film was fucking genius and the "villain complaints" were just stupid. Thor 2 was definitely a huge misstep though.

Stanley I noticed that as well. Such a shame too. Wright was working on that film as far back as 2003 where he wanted Simon Pegg and didn't start writing the film until Iron Man. But it was sort of his fault it took him so long. I read that Marvel wanted the film to originally release around near Iron Man 2 so that way we have 2 films back to back with Thor and First Avenger. Also it would allow Ant Man to be made in time to being a founder of the Avengers.

Could possibly have been. But Wright wouldn’t connect his script to the MCU so he had to go. One can’t expect to make a Marvel Studios comic book movie and not connect it to the MCU.
@serbancapraru8559
@serbancapraru8559 6 жыл бұрын
TheBongReyes But I bet the movie would have been much better. At the end of the day those little connections and easter eggs aren't that important... The only connection you need is AntMan appearing in Civil War after. Sorted. Besides... The fight with Falcon was kinda cringy anyways.

In another parallel universe, Feige was head of DC Studios and Crisis on Infinite Earths is the biggest movie of all time. Also, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold buddy cop movie directed by Shane Black is 2nd biggest movie of all time. Even bigger than The Justice Society movie and Superman Forever starring Brandon Routh.

This might be an unpopular opinion but Phase 2 is my favorite phase in terms of structure. I like the fact that it doesn't end up with an epic Avengers movie but rather with Ant-Man, a new superhero with a tragic past but it's so loveable that quickly grows on you.

With Edgar Wright, I do definitely think that whatever happened had to do with simple creative differences rather than Marvel trying to force continuity stuff like people always say, because the Peyton Reed Ant-Man had barely any connectivity to the rest of the universe anyway.

I don't know, I feel like Feige did answer the Edgar Wright question. He was very professional and courteous about it, but he seemed to confirm that yes: Marvel wanted to make a Marvel movie, not an Edgar Wright movie. They already had an idea of what kind of movie Ant-Man would be, and when Wright's vision wasn't lining up with what that movie was, he had to go.
