would you be OK if you hit a drone or a bird?
@ABHelicopters4 жыл бұрын
Andy Tutton -hello- thanks for the comment- depending where the bird / drone struck , it could cause catastrophic damage - there is a video of a 500 that gets hit by a drone whilst following some dune buggies- the helicopter lands safely - but if it were to hit a critical component - say a pitch change rod on the main rotor or disable the tail rotor, the outcome may be less favourable . Certainly- if it hit the pilot, it might also incapacitate him/ her- leading to an unsuccessful flight

Werner Wiedon FYI, both MD500E and the MD500D have a 5-bladed main rotor and a T-tail. It's the 500 & 500C that have 4 blades and a V-tail. The 500E has the more pointed nose shape, although it can be retrofitted to earlier models as a modification.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the comment and glad that you enjoyed the video . Yes the 500 is a great helicopter to fly, in some respects there are a lot of similarities, both are very ‘hands on’ , old school mechanical helicopters, no hydraulic, the 500 is incredibly manoeuvrable, (not great for people in the back with the position of the transmission system!), but lots of excess power

Also partially because the md500 has a 5 Seat config - with the 3rd person up front - and 2 in the back. In this config, the collective has to be on the left hand side - else the passenger would sit on it

@dominiquestephenson15417 жыл бұрын
Don’t know why KZbin did this, sorry this comment was for another video ref my old NavAir years......
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominique, thanks for the note- they are fantastic aircraft to fly- very stable which is good instrument flight and cruising accidentally and yet incredibly manoeuvrable, with a rotor head design that removes some of the risks of ‘mast bumping’ associated with the Bell Huey/205 , Jetranger and the the R-66. It is also a very quick heli -the Vne (max speed) is 156kts (152kts in the E model)
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
It is really a pilots helicopter- the major draw back of the aircraft is the passenger proposition in the rear - due to the install angle of the engine - about 37 degrees - the main rotor transmission input shaft sits between the rear passengers- so headspace is limited!
@dominiquestephenson15417 жыл бұрын
AB Helicopters Ltd - I guess KZbin routed my comment here after all. 😎 I flew in Sea Kings (ASW/SAR Airman) in the US Navy. Nice big stable reliable helo but not sporty. A Royal Navy Lynx came aboard our Carrier one day and we were all drooling! I seriously wanted to switch services. In 89 I took a ride in a Bell 47G at Badlands NP, South Dakota. It was the 2 seater and the pilot was ex- US Army. We reminisced and when we got to a remote area he told me to “watch this”. From @ 2k AGL he pushed over hard until we were lookin straight down at the badlands through that big bubble canopy. I loved every second of it (and was very aware of mast bumping) but he skillfully re-loaded the disc and recovered). Other than that as I said I’ve always gravitated to the 500C & D from that era. I can’t fly anymore (always intended to add an “H” to my PPL) but kidney failure and transplant nixed my medical. Someday I will catch a ride in one of these sweet whirlybirds. Thanks for your reply!
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a real background with helicopters! Sea kings are great platforms , the Lynx is quite impressive as an aircraft that held the speed record (admittedly it was stripped out and not you standard in service aircraft!) As your experience (and others that I know of) demonstrate that mast bumping can be an issue, if you know what to expect and how to recover, is not automatically an accident situation! Sorry to hear about your medical issues, hopefully you will still be able to jump in with an instructor and still get some 'stick time'.

este si me encanta el MD500E la semana que biene me compro uno.
@proudvietvet29267 жыл бұрын
The MD500E is in fact a very fine little Helicopter. However, Helicopters should be piloted from the right seat. Reason = The Pilot should never take his/her hand off the cyclic at any time. This video demonstrates what happens when the Pilot uses his knees to hold the cyclic while adjusting the GPS screen and other instruments; a less than straight and level flight. The collective, used by the left hand, has a friction device to prevent it from moving, allowing the Pilot to use his left hand to make minor instrument adjustments without altering his flight path & stability of the Helicopter. Some prefer to Pilot from the right seat but, we were trained to fly from the right seat only from day one for both safety reasons and total control of the Helicopter. Not trying to be a smart a$$, just pointing out a better way to fly from experience :)
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
Hi PV- thanks for the post. The MD is a bit strange in that it is set up for left seat flying - there is no starter button on the right hand side dual controls for example. You are right about the friction lock on the collective , however the 500 doesn’t have hydraulics for the controls and hence there is a trim hat on the top of the cyclic which is used to remove control forces in Flight - which means once it is trimmed - it can almost be flown ‘hands off’ - (not that I am suggestive that be a good idea) but it means you can then re tune radios etc without loosing control or crudely just holding the cyclic between knees . Hope that helps
@proudvietvet29267 жыл бұрын
Thank you Sir for the constructive feed back. I am "old school" and had it burned into me to always fly right seat for many reasons :) With over 6,000 hrs in Helicopters and 42,000+ total hrs, it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks LOL! I must admit, your Helicopters do look like very fine Aircraft.
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
Not a problem- always good to get constructive comments and I would usually agree with your feedback! I believe it is due the civil aircraft being designed with 5 seats- ie the front seat a bench for 3 people- which requires the collective to be on the left away from any passengers . In real life I have only ever seen 4 seat versions!
@proudvietvet29267 жыл бұрын
"Progress" I think they call it.... ARGGG! I started out in a Bell G9 with the big glass bubble and open tail boom (like the ones they flew in the TV show M.A.S.H.) (too many years back to admit :). I now own & fly a fully restored UH-1C with the 1,400 HP turbine and full digital Garmin 1000 glass cockpit panel. Better than the new ones they gave us in 'Nam. Much tighter and more responsive, much closer tolerances after we did a full restoration from the skids up. I think I will stick with the two front seat Helicopters with the right hand Pilots seat :) It just doesn't feel 'natural' for me to sit in the left seat! Too old to change now! I would be anxious to see the 3 place front seat Helicopters, out of curiosity. Seems like they would have to drastically offset the instrument panel to the left to benefit the Pilot. Again, many thanks!

Would like to ask. Why is the pilot flying on the left side ? Many other helicopter they're sitting on the right.
@ABHelicopters2 жыл бұрын
Great question- the 500 is build as standard with the captain on the left - in this set up, controls can be on the right , but you can’t shut down the engine for example, as there is a throttle lock on the left collective stick only. This set up makes it better for vertical reference work, with the pilot leaning out the left hand side, only leaning over the collective

Can send you the md500e Flight manual if you want?

Do you like left side or right side piloting best?
@ABHelicopters7 жыл бұрын
+Tony Merlot - as an instructor - I fly predominantly from the left seat- so when it comes to the 500 - which is set up (in the civil world) with captain on the left- the starter button and idle cut off collar is only on the left collective - so I have got used to that. That said, it does take a bit of time to get used to swapping seats at the beginning.

I'll never get to the UK to fly with you in the MD 500

Can anybody explain to me what's the purpose of this video??
@ABHelicopters5 жыл бұрын
What are you looking for from the video ?
@PaoloCaglioLMT5 жыл бұрын
Watching a MD500 in action, its capabilities etc. I think that uploading a boring video from inside the cockpit with the entire runup of the engine, a boring flight over a flat land at 500 feet agl with the pilot quiet all the time doesn't make any sense. So tell me: why did you upload this video?
@PaoloCaglioLMT5 жыл бұрын
AB Helicopters Ltd for example this is a cool video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJCUpnaOmMaZf9k The MD500 is an amazing lightweight utility machine. Your video is comparable to going to a date with a porn star and just taking her to the movies to watch a comedy...
@ABHelicopters5 жыл бұрын
Your video that you suggest is indeed super cool- but this one is filmed inside the cockpit for those that want to see what it is like to start up and fly. Different audience - different video - that’s all. Sorry that it’s not your thing

AB Helicopters Ltd hey come on I didn't mean to be rude! Just being cocky to encouraging you to push your (film-making) limits 😉

Who was flying the 500? Your head was on the panel, map's and phone. Not much situational awareness there.
@ft6zzz6 жыл бұрын
you burnt that nice grass with your exhaust.
@ABHelicopters6 жыл бұрын
A downside of the 500- the exhaust sits low compared with other turbines - fortunately this aircraft is on high skids - else there would be an enhanced fire risk

Fantastic looking aircraft and a lovely calm evening. Who could ask for anything more?

Why does everyone ruin cool aviation videos with music??? And fast speed??
@ABHelicopters6 жыл бұрын
I will upload the full length one with no music and no speed for you
@DustyCowdog6 жыл бұрын
AB Helicopters Ltd ... haha... I didn’t mean anything offensive, I’m very envious that I’m not flying that baby... I can listen to music anytime, but I never get to fly in turbine helies! Thanks again! Subscribed 😀
