Fun fact : the "mini" water lettuces are actually exactly the same plant as the big ones, they just grow smaller because there's less light and nutrients in aquariums. If you pick a very big water lettuce and keep it in an aquarium, it will start producing smaller ones, and those smaller ones will produce even smaller ones, until eventually you're left with tiny water lettuces. So it's not a different species or a dwarf variety, it's just the same plant. They also can't live in aquariums with a lid because they suffer from too much humidity in the air and just rot.

You've inspired me with this to have a Fish Bowl too. It is about 2 months, with Guppies and pond snails and loads of Cabomba and 1 floating Frogbit and some Malaysian bogwood. The Guppy parents have both regretfully passed (they jumped out and dried!) but not before leaving behind wee guppy babies. Had to trim the bowl 3 times now. The greens grow a riot! All i did was do 20% water change (and turkey basted out the solid wastes) weekly. Loving it so far.

MD, you should try a siesta period on your ecosystem tank as set out by Diana Walstad. The idea is that your plants use up all the CO2 after the lights come on after a long off period, then for the rest of the time the lights are on they are not growing as optimally because of the lack of CO2. Algae can grow with no CO2 but plants cannot. (All tanks have CO2 even if you're not injecting it.) The siesta allows the tank time to regenerate its CO2. It's suggested to have a blackout period of 4 hours or so in between your light schedule. For example, you could do 6 hours in the morning-4 hours off-6 hours in the evening. Or 4 hours morning-4 hours off-6 hours evening. Something like that. This also helps so you can enjoy the fish when you're home. If you're away from work all day you can set your tank to be on in the morning, off while you're at work, then on when you come home. In my own experience with trying this in my ecosystem tanks I have noticed no algae and healthy plant growth, even seeing pearling from my plants. All my other low tech tanks do not do this. It has to be from utilizing the siesta. Worth an experiment on your end. Thanks for reading my rambles, take care.
@AccessibleCruises2 жыл бұрын

Damn, this is pretty interesting. I used to have some fish back in the day but the constant water changes and cleaning were so annoying that at some point when the fish passed away I just hid the aquarium away. Not to mention the cost, this is quite a lot of water to change out per month. This is not only very interesting but also eliminates all of my problems I had with my aquarium... When I move out of my current cage, I might actually revisit having fish, this is looking great apart from just... growing everywhere but hey, a trim is not as annoying as water change and tank cleaning.

When my shrimp tanks get the harder glass algae I do continue to scrape it but I do not remove it. I let it fall to the floor and they pile on it and devour it. I do SOMETIMES remove the algae and mix it into a duckweed mash that I bake and crumble into my tanks. They eat it up.

Forgive me for this probably naive question, but is the water lettuce edible? I like mini greens and living on my own even a few leaves can make the difference to a human meal (as opposed to one for shrimp or fish lol). If so, are the roots edible as well as the leaves? It would be great if the hydroponic nature of the tanks could yield an edible harvest of sorts. Are there any other aquascape plants that are edible please?

@@slxnova8106 I got a surface skimmer filter which helped but it didn't stop it. I had mine 4 years and it never went away no matter what I did. @77slate2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the temperature of the water, you may need a heater for tropical fish depending on how warm your room the tank will be in. Tropical is generally between 25c to 27c but can vary on the fish. Shortlist some fish first that would be suitable for your tank size /or if mixing fish ones that are compatible and then research what temps you need from there.
