John had many great songs after the Beatles. This is probably his most famous........but I've heard it too much. I'm partial to the "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album. VERY experimental but also just as much heart felt. Before the album he did this thing called "scream therapy" which was supposed to help him through some stuff, and he uses it to create the songs on the album. The whole album is very broken down, simple and most of all raw.....but the great thing about it is that there's passion in every song. Everything he writes about on that album is both very personal and very deeply felt. You DEFINITELY should check it out, and listen to it ALL THE WAY THROUGH. The reason I say that is cuz' like with so many thematic album recordings that went on about that time, there's a very specific vibe that sets the mood, and it's the kinda' rabbit hole that difficult to fall down and up. It's a short album, and every song on it is both incredible, and sounds better together with the others as you make your way through it.

This song was written 1971, concurrent with the Vietnam War (1955 - 1975), and the counter-culture and anti-war movement; that historical and socio-cultural context is very important. Please don't take this wrong, but when you say that 'this was ahead of it's time', I can't help myself. A bit over 100 years ago associated with what we call World War I there was an active movement calling it The War to End All Wars. And they were speaking from the heart. And the League of Nations was formed to try to make the dream come true. And after WWII, the United Nations was formed to try to make the dream come true. This isn't meant to be a downer. But the reality is that it's a constant battle, and an uphill battle, to wage against the darker side of humanity. It takes a lot of work, constant work, and humanity will likely continue to slip up and fail. But the effort to try again is worth it.
