There _are_ free audio dramas on there, but this is usually because they’re fan-made, so they _can’t_ make profit off the work because then they would be profiting off a licensed product. One example of a fan-made audio drama is for the novel _Erha._ Alternatively, it may be free because it’s based on a fanfiction and made by fans, such as _Paradox of Love_ (爱情理论) which is a fan-made adaptation of a fanfic written for _Shabi,_ an actual novel. Now I do think audio drama crews deserve to be paid, because remember: it’s an entire audio _drama,_ as in, it’s like a cdrama, but just without visuals. You still get multiple actors and actresses, soundtracks, sound effects, and more. It is _not_ an audio book, where someone directly reads a book out loud. It’s an entire _adaptation_ of the novel. Because of this, paying for an audio drama is a way to support the crew and voice actors etc to encourage and finance them to keep working on these really cool projects! Additionally, the audio dramas are actually _very_ cheap, especially if you’re converting into western currency. And you can pay using ApplePay or the Google Store. For example, audio dramas usually cost 200-something diamonds per season, and the cheapest money-to-diamond conversion is 60 diamonds in MaoEr FM, which is 6 RMB-and which, as of the time I’m writing this, is only $1.17 CAD or $0.85 USD. So here’s all the options for diamonds you can buy in MaoEr FM broken down: - 60💎 = 60 RMB ≈ $1.17 CAD or $0.85 USD - 180💎 = 18 RMB ≈ $3.51 CAD or 2.55 USD - 500💎 = 50 RMB ≈ $9.73 CAD or $7.08 USD - 1280💎 = 128 RMB ≈ $24.94 CAD or $18.11 USD - 2580💎 = 258 RMB ≈ $50.26 CAD or $36.51 USD - 5180💎 = 518 RMB ≈ $100.77 CAD or 73.31 USD Now, remember an audio drama season is usually around 200💎, and looking through my collection of bookmarked audio dramas that I haven’t paid for yet, the price is usually around 219💎, 239💎, or even 249💎 and 279💎 (I did see ones that were 159💎 and 189💎)… So let’s be generous and say the usual average is like…230💎. So via the conversion system above, one audio drama season, which is usually averaged around 230💎 = 23 RMB, which is around $4.47 CAD or $3.25 USD. Now if you’re reading this and you’re not from Canada or the US, sorry! But I can’t possibly list out the conversion from RMB to _every_ country on Earth. You’ll just have to do your own conversion! 😅🙏 Still, I hope that helps some people who may be curious about MaoEr FM! Oh and as a final note!: there are some other audio drama providers in China besides MaoEr FM! Just as an example, Manbo is another popular one.
